Nature, Wildlife & Flora, Jul 21st, 2012,
Those who know me – and few do, what with me being a surly, reclusive type – know that I am not exactly what is known as a “nature boy”. While I like a bit of sun, a walk in the woods and a dip in the sea, I like to know that I can return at will to a soft bed, a comfy couch and a decent wifi connection. This past week I’ve been sleeping on windswept beaches, hiking through dusty canyons and gawking at colorful fish beneath the crystal clear waters of the Aegean Sea. It’s made for…

Here’s some sweet information for all you US residents: This month is National Ice Cream Month! In 1984, former president, Ronald Regan, declared July to be National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday (which was yesterday) as National Ice Cream Day. Why? Apparently, he wanted to give proper recognition to the popularity of ice cream in the states (about 90% of the US population eats ice cream) and even announced that both occasions (the month and the day) should be celebrated with “ceremonies and activities”. Earth Day is on April 22. Everyone knows this. However, there is another somewhat lesser known environmental holiday that also takes place this month (depending on where you live). The holiday I am referring to is Arbor Day. Arbor Day is a day dedicated to the planting, care, and celebration of trees. It was officially founded in 1872 by J. Sterling Morton. Many countries around the world celebrate Arbor Day, but the dates vary depending on which country you are in or from. Germany, Japan, Kenya, South Korea, and the US all celebrate Arbor Day (or a similar day) in…

Designs made from tens of thousands of light bulbs brighten up the holiday season in downtown Hong Kong – at an enormous cost of energy. But now many festive light decorations in the Chinese city are using energy efficient LED lights instead of standard bulbs. LEDs use around 80% less electricity than normal lights and last around 20 times longer, according to a CNN video report. The LED displays are dazzling and multipurpose – each bulb can create 16 million different colors and will be used for Chinese New Year as well as Christmas decorations. New York and London are…
