Haiti: cholera epidemic spurs witch-hunt with deadly casualties

haiti-cholera-epidemic-spurs-witch-hunt-with-deadly-casualties

At least 15 people where killed over the past two weeks in Haiti. They didn’t die from the cholera epidemic or any other disease, at least not directly. All of them where lynched and their bodies burned in the Southwestern province of Grand’Anse after being accused of propagating cholera with black magic. Fear, ignorance and confusion over the fast-spreading cholera epidemic lay at the basis of this violent witch-hunt. In a little less than 6 weeks, more than 1.800 people have died from cholera and more than 84.000 people are currently infected. In the province of Grand’Anse the first case…

Frustrations and rumors culminated into violent protests against the United Nations Nepalese military troops stationed in Haiti. According to wide spread rumors amongst Haitians the Nepalese Blue Helmets would be responsible of bringing the cholera bacteria into the country. In several cities Haitians demonstrated against the U.N. military throwing stones, shouting their displeasure about the situation and sometimes even shooting at the troops. Sadly enough, at least two people died during the protests. One man was shot after he tried to shoot a Nepalese soldier, another died as a result of violent riots in the streets. The misery is not…

In the meantime, Haitian authorities are on high alert, watching tropical storm Tomas gain strength as it moves towards the Caribbean. Weather forecast predict there is a 60 percent chance that hurricane Tomas will hit Haiti within the coming days.

Haiti cholera outbreak: just another earthquake aftershock

haiti-cholera-outbreak-just-another-earthquake-aftershock

Cholera is a terrible disease. It’s an infection of the small intestine that causes profuse watery diarrhea, vomiting and abdominal pain. It’s transmitted mainly through contaminated drinking water or food. It can be treaded with antibiotics and with rehydration solutions. Still, cholera is a major cause of death in the world that affects the weak and the poor long before it can spread to the rich and wealthy in western countries. And it’s easy to understand why. As an infection it starts with contaminated water or food and needs to be treaded with medicine (obviously) but also with clean water…

That’s right, the inside scoop on an immediate threat to the erstwhile darlings of the media – Haitian quake victims – brought to you by Jeff Spicoli. breaking-earthquake-rocks-taiwan

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter scale struck in Taiwan today causing structural damage, rail disruptions, fire and around 64 injuries. Fortunately, there have been no reports of deaths from the quake so far. In an article on the earthquake, The Christian Science Monitor spoke to Kuo Kai-wen, director of the Seismology Center of Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau, who said the recent quakes in Chile and Haiti are unrelated to this latest seismic event in Taiwan: Kuo says the Taiwan, Chile, and Haiti quakes involved different tectonic plates. Globally, he says, there’s an average of one…

global-weather-chaos-earthquakes-tsunamis-and-flooding

In less than 24 hours, a good portion of the globe has been hit with a number of natural disasters. Unfortunately for them, the worst of it hasn’t even happened yet. Yesterday, Chile was hit by an 8.8 earthquake—one of the worst ever recorded. Homes, highways and bridges were torn apart and at least 214 people have been found dead so far. To make matters worse, that isn’t even the full extent of the damage and the death toll will most likely rise. A 15-story building in Concepcion (Chile’s second largest city) collapsed. The nation’s capital, Santiago, saw damage to…

Transforming waste to resources in Haiti

transforming-waste-to-resources-in-haiti

The Caribbean island nation of Haiti is one of the poorest and least developed countries in the world. There is little industry in Haiti and the majority of Haitian people – mostly subsistence farmers – survive on about $2 a day. In addition to poverty and political and economic instability, Haiti suffers from environmental hardships including soil erosion, flooding and deforestation. Tropical storms and hurricanes also periodically batter the country. In such impoverished and disadvantaged conditions, commonplace things can take on entirely new meanings. Take trash: the organization SOIL or Sustainable Organic Integrated Livelihoods is a self-described ‘non-profit organization dedicated…
