4 people have been reported dead and around 50 injured due to an earthquake that struck northern Italy in the early hours of the morning. The quake struck just 4am, just 35km (22mi) north of Bologna, at the relatively shallow depth of about 10km below the surface. Several historical sites were damaged, including churches and a medieval castle. From BBC News: It was felt across a large swathe of northern Italy, including the cities of Bologna, Ferrara, Verona and Mantua and as far away as Milan and Venice. See the following Al Jazeera English video report for more: Meanwhile…

We’ve all seen them: The television commercials that try to convince us that a certain cologne or perfume will drive the opposite gender absolutely wild, as if the headache-creating aroma will unleash a person’s feral side. While that may not always (or ever) be the case for people, one scent in particular has played a rather interesting role in the tracking of Jaguars: Calvin Klein’s Obsession for Men cologne. It was discovered after an experiment conducted by the WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) Bronx Zoo in New York. All they were trying to do is figure out a way to get…

Agatha, the tropical storm that recently tore through parts of Central America, has now claimed 177 lives: 152 in Guatemala, 16 in Honduras, and 9 in El Salvador. In addition to the rising death toll, 100 people are missing in Guatemala and an additional 87 are wounded. Almost 125,000 people have been evacuated at this point, though only 74,000 of them are living in shelters. Oh, and not to forget the volcano eruption that happened prior to the storm, 3 people were crushed to death by rocks from the volcanic activity. As for Honduras, about 12,000 people were evacuated, but…

The aftermath of tropical storm Agatha continues to cast much fear and worry over Central American citizens. To get an idea of how bad some of the damage is, simply take a look at the images with this article. That giant hole you see is actually a 200-foot deep sinkhole that swallowed a 3-story building. Here’s a run-down of the latest update: In Guatemala, 123 are dead and at least 90 more are missing. Landslides buried dozens of Indian communities and killed at least 60 people in Chimaltenango province. Three homes were destroyed and 11 people died in Parajbei, and…

Natural disasters, Wildlife & Flora, May 31st, 2010,
Last night, it was reported that the death toll in Central America climbed to 83, as authorities and rescue teams struggle to reach those cut-off by flooding and landslides. Thus far, 73 people in Guatemala were killed, 1 Honduran death was linked to the weather and potentially 8 more are currently missing—possibly adrift somewhere in the Pacific Ocean; thirteen people were killed in a landslide that came through San Antonio Palopo and another man was crushed to death by a wall that collapsed in Santa Ana. Apart from the deaths, 45 homes in Honduras were destroyed and at least 1,800…

Natural disasters, Wildlife & Flora, May 30th, 2010,
Hurricane season is officially here: 16 people in Central America were killed by tropical storm Agatha. The storm hit land between Guatemala and Mexico, with wind speeds up to 45 mph (75 kph). Although the storm weakened to a tropical depression, it was still enough to trigger deadly landslides. One in Guatemala City killed 4 people and left 11 others missing; another killed 4 children in Santa Catarina Pinula, and in Quetzaltenango a loose boulder crushed a home–killing the 2 children and 2 adults trapped inside. On top of that, an additional 10 to 20 inches of rain was expected…
