Today is World Water Day

today-is-world-water-day-2

The purpose of World Water Day 2012 is to draw attention to the fact that some 783 million people live without access to clean drinking water. World Water Day – ‘celebrated’ today, March 22nd – also highlights water conservation, wastage and consumption. Water is an increasingly more valuable resource as the Earth’s population grows and water-intensive activities like beef farming stretch world water supplies.   Greenpeace is marking World Water Day with a campaign to spread awareness of the pollution of waterways – especially in China – by the global textile industry. The textile industry is the third largest source…

Shell experimenting with dogs to detect Arctic oil

shell-experimenting-with-dogs-to-detect-arctic-oil

In preparation for the eventuality of oil spills resulting from drilling in the icy Arctic region, Shell Oil might be enlisting the help of sniffer dogs as an inexpensive contingency plan. Shell plans to start drilling off the northwest coast of Alaska as early as June. Since there are as of yet no methods for detecting oil spills that are covered by ice and snow, the use of dachshunds and border collies could be the best the minds of Shell and other companies have been able to come up with. Personally, I have no idea if this is an effective…

Japan: Tsunami aid used to fuel whale hunt

japan-tsunami-aid-used-to-fuel-whale-hunt

2.3bn yen ($29 million/ €22 million) in victims’ aid for the March 11 tsunami, which devastated communities on the northeastern coast of Japan, has been diverted to the country’s whaling industry. This discovery has sparked outrage from environmentalist groups like Greenpeace and Sea Shepherd and could further damage Japan’s international reputation. Junichi Sato, executive director for Greenpeace Japan, is quoted in the Independent: Not only is the whaling industry unable to survive without large increases in government handouts, now it’s siphoning money away from the victims of the 11 March triple disaster, at a time when they need it most….

North Sea oil spill not over

north-sea-oil-spill-not-over

The oil leak in the North Sea, which was discovered by Shell last Monday – but not announced until Friday – has been mostly staunched, according to the UK government. Yet another, albeit much smaller, leak has been found stemming from the same offshore platform and it is spilling some 2 barrels of crude oil per day. The second leak is proving difficult to stop, according to Shell, due to its ‘awkward’ positioning. Last Monday’s oil spill is already being called the worst to occur in UK waters in the last 10 years. From an article in the Independent: An…

Greenpeace: Major brands linked to river pollution in China

greenpeace-major-brands-linked-to-river-pollution-in-china

Nike, Abercrombie & Fitch, Adidas, Puma, Calvin Klein, Converse, Cortefiel, H&M and Lacoste are among the global megabrands named in a new Greenpeace report on hazardous river pollution by the garment industry in China. Since 1995 China has been the world’s largest exporter of textiles, attracting Western and Japanese brands to manufacture there due to cheap labor and lax regulations. Even when major international brands have self-imposed regulations on how their garments are produced, such rules are harder to monitor when outsourced to firms in other countries. Youngor Group, the Chinese company linked to the international firms, uses chemical dyes…

The Dark Side: Greenpeace targets VW as Europe’s least eco-friendly carmaker

the-dark-side-greenpeace-targets-vw-as-europe%e2%80%99s-least-eco-friendly-carmaker

Activist group Greenpeace claims that while Volkswagen promotes itself as a ‘green’ auto company, when it comes to delivering on environmental issues, Europe’s biggest carmaker is a greenwash. VW sold 2.9 million cars in Europe in 2009, over a million more than its leading competition, PSA Peugeot Citroën. But you can’t blame them for that, can you? The real problem is that on average Volkswagens pollute more than any other of Europe’s top 8 auto brands. What’s more is that VW has failed to reduce emissions and increase fuel efficiency in its vehicles when compared to the competition (especially Toyota)….

Coal dependence puts Apple at bottom of Greenpeace’s list

coal-dependence-puts-apple-at-bottom-of-greenpeaces-list

Things have not been looking good for the world’s favorite technology company. They seem green and ethical and liberal and just plain cuddly-cute, but Apple has fallen from the tree and landed in last place on Greenpeace’s “How Dirty is Your Data” table of tech firms. Cloud computing and our increasing reliance on energy intensive data centers are fueling this change in the way we use energy (for information) and the trend is set to rise 4 fold in 10 years time. From the Guardian: The report estimated dependence on coal for Apple’s data centres at 54.5%, followed by Facebook…

facebook to share “green” tech with competitors

facebook-to-share-%e2%80%9cgreen%e2%80%9d-tech-with-competitors

Greenpeace has been giving facebook a tough time regarding social networking giant’s reliance on fossil fuels to power its massive servers. Back in February 2010 facebook announced that it would build a new, more efficient, datacenter. Sounds, great, right? Problem is they chose to build it in a location where it will be powered by coal-burning electricity plants. So Greenpeace launched the “Unfriend Coal” campaign, which ironically has its own facebook page. Now, in an effort to share its energy efficiency innovations – without directly addressing the coal issue – facebook has decided to be truly open source and share…

Donate a tweet a day to help Greenpeace and other causes that matter to you

donate-a-tweet-a-day-to-help-greenpeace-and-other-causes-that-matter-to-you

Who doesn’t have a tweet to spare or share for a good cause? Just recently, getting my daily dose of Greenpeace online news, I noticed the “donate 1 tweet a day” link on the organizations website. This link led me to the Greenpeace space on the Justcoz.org website, an online relay system that lets you donate tweets to help raise awareness about issues that matter to you. The website lists all the causes that you can donate tweets to. There is also a search box to find causes based on keywords or particular search terms. If you have a cause…

Indonesian government to use REDD money for deforestation. Say what?

indonesian-government-to-use-redd-money-for-deforestation-say-what

“REDD Alert: Protection Money”, an extensive report issued by Greenpeace last Tuesday, claims that the Indonesian government has plans to use the billion dollars the country will get from the U.S., Norway and the U.K. under the REDD program to cut down 37 million acres of rainforest. Greenpeace’s findings are based on leaked documents from the ministry of Agriculture, Energy and Forestry. The report states that Indonesia’s greenhouse gas reduction proposals may create perverse incentives to clear forests and peat lands, create opportunities for corruption and actually drive an increase in greenhouse gas emissions. According to the leaked documents Indonesian…

Indonesian forests: a future goldmine or bound to disappear?

indonesian-forests-a-future-goldmine-or-bound-to-disappear

Everyone remembers the COP15 Climate Conference that took place in Copenhagen in December of 2009. Well maybe you don’t remember every detail of the agenda but you surely remember the Conference was not a big success. Now the United Nations will soon be at it again, with COP16 just looming from around the corner. COP16 will be the 16th edition of the Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP). It will also hold simultaneously the 6th Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP). “Parties”…

Dirty coal and Green on Facebook. What’s the deal? And what should we do about it?

dirty-coal-and-green-on-facebook-whats-the-deal-and-what-should-we-do-about-it

Recently Facebook launched their Green on Facebook page in an effort to green up their image after the big dirty coal data center debacle of earlier this year. According to their Facebook page, the Green on Facebook is run by Facebook and will highlight our efforts to be a green and sustainable global citizen. Together with 56.000 others, I became a fan op the page, and as many others I’m sure I’m pretty disappointed with the content of it. The wall is filled with links to various articles about different environmental topics, but very little information is available about Facebook’s…

Meanwhile, deep sea drilling underway in UK waters

meanwhile-deep-sea-drilling-underway-in-uk-waters

The aborted 10:10 campaign film ‘No Pressure’ has elicited a lot of hate, anger – or at least pretend outrage – because of its questionable attempt at satire. Meanwhile, some actual, dangerous behavior is happening off the UK coast, near the Shetland Islands, in the form of deep sea oil drilling. Where is the outrage and vitriol about that? The Gulf of Mexico recently got fouled and workers died – actual people rather than pretend characters in a short film. Billions of dollars in livelihoods, an ecological catastrophe, blah blah blah… What? Oh yeah sure, go ahead and ‘drill baby…

Germany: Protests against nuclear power extension highlight public opposition

germany-protests-against-nuclear-power-extension-highlight-public-opposition

Germany’s cabinet has voted to extend nuclear power use in the country by an average of 12 years. According to legislation passed in 2002 by the Social Democratic-Green Party coalition, all nuclear power stations in Germany were to be decommissioned by 2022. Not any more. German Chancellor Angela Merkel of the Christian Democratic Party, which rules as part of a center right coalition, sees the extension as a way to generate tax income, while meeting greenhouse gas emission reduction goals and transitioning to renewable energy sources. But nuclear energy is not popular in Germany and the decision to extend the…

North Sea oil: Updates in Greenpeace vs. Chevron

north-sea-oil-updates-in-greenpeace-vs-chevron

After four days of Greenpeace activists hanging in a survival pod attached to an oil drilling ship in the North Sea, a court in Edinburgh, Scotland issued an injunction yesterday ordering the campaigners to leave on grounds of safety. According to an article in the Observer, oil giant Chevron claimed the need to move their ship due to rough seas, though Greenpeace countered that Chevron simply intends to venture into another site for exploratory deep-sea drilling. Greenpeace announced that it would comply, nonetheless. Yet just one day later, Greenpeace has renewed its efforts to stop deep-sea oil drilling in the…

Greenpeace occupies deep-water drilling ship near Shetland Islands

greenpeace-occupies-deep-water-drilling-ship-near-shetland-islands

A Chevron vessel has been occupied by Greenpeace activists in an attempt to stop oil drilling in the waters of Scotland’s Shetland Islands. The US oil firm has dubious company in the region, which is deemed to have some 2 billion barrels of oil, in the form of the BP who also plan on drilling near Shetland for oil and gas. They are preventing the anchor from being pulled up and effectively blocking the ship from moving to its drill site. We are calling on North Sea governments to adopt a ban on all deep-water drilling. –Greenpeace (via UPI) According…

The Arctic oil rush

the-arctic-oil-rush

Scottish oil exploration and extraction firm Cairn Energy has struck oil in the Arctic only weeks after they’d found gas. Cairn Energy has been drilling off the coast of Greenland in waters up to 500 meters deep since only a couple of months ago. They have since faced opposition from environmental groups like the WWF and Greenpeace, the later of which successfully stopped their operations for a few hours by occupying an oil rig and suspending themselves from tents. Along with the Royal Bank of Scotland, Cairn were also one of the focuses of protest by activists during Edinburgh climate…

UK govt and European e-waste illegally dumped in Africa

uk-govt-and-european-e-waste-illegally-dumped-in-africa

Old computers and other e-waste from British government departments have been discovered at dumpsites in African countries and in containers headed for the continent, according to the UK’s environment agency. The chairman of the agency, Lord Smith, warned that the amount of illegally exported e-waste is rising and that in addition to health and environmental concerns, it is also a threat to British national security, due to the risk that sensitive information could still be stored in the computers’ hardware. He said that waste from the UK, which includes computers, monitors, televisions and DVD players, is sent to countries in…

Greenpeace campaign against Italian nuclear program

greenpeace-campaign-against-italian-nuclear-program

Greenpeace Austria’s virtual campaign to stop the nuclear ambitions of the Italian Prime Minister has begun. Through a dedicated website, stop-berlusconi, the Austrian people are being requested to sign an online petition asking Berlusconi to keep Italy – like Austria – ”nuclear free” . Many Austrians are concerned above all because one of the most likely nuclear sites in Italy, Chioggia, is close to their borders, particularly the two Austrian provinces Carinthia and Styria. A reactor in Chioggia, 30 km from Venice, near the popular beaches of the Adriatic, would be a major risk for people that live in this area, but it is also…

Dye from blue jeans turns China’s Pearl River indigo

dye-from-blue-jeans-turns-china%e2%80%99s-pearl-river-indigo

Xintang, China is home to some 15,000 textile factories which produce 200 million pairs of blue jeans every year. The wastewater from these factories turns local rivers an unnatural shade of blue. Residents of Xintang complain of health problems such as birth defects, breathing difficulties and skin rashes, but no serious studies have been conducted to link health maladies to pollutants from the textile industry. Meanwhile, the cotton industry in India is being blamed for health problems linked to the toxic pesticide endosulfan. Pesticides are also believed to cause children’s hair to turn grey. But pesticides and cotton are huge…
