California’s only wild wolf returns to Oregon

californias-only-wild-wolf-returns-to-oregon

Journey (aka OR-7), for a while the only Gray Wolf living wild in the state of California, has now packed up and returned north to Oregon. It was fun while it lasted, but like many who become disillusioned with the shallow glitz of celebrity, Journey is in need of real friends. Those don’t exist in California, not for wolves anyway. OR-7 won’t find a pack or a lone mate, since he is the only wild wolf known to set foot in California since the 1920s. Of course, since Journey is tracked by satellite thanks to a GPS collar, it’s easy…

Journey: The only wild wolf in California

journey-the-only-wild-wolf-in-california

Last month I mentioned a ‘celebrity wolf’, who has been making a solo journey of hundreds of miles (over 1,000 km) throughout the American State of Oregon – the great state in which I was born if anyone cares… didn’t think so. Anyway, the lone Gray Wolf, until now known by the clinical moniker OR-7, has made his way – like so many disillusioned loners in search of stardom – into California. When Katia arrived in Ireland and Scotland she was no longer officially a hurricane, but still produced gusts of 85mph (137km/h) and heavy rains causing damage and travel disruptions. Damage in the UK alone was estimated to be at around £100,000 (€115,000 or $154,000). In the aftermath of tropical storm Katia a heartwarming story of rescued red squirrel babies is making the rounds….

iwc-whale-threat-goes-far-beyond-the-japanese-hunt

The International Whaling Commission is currently holding talks on the British island of Jersey. Issues being dealt with at the IWC talks include the effects of oil and gas exploration on gray whales in Russia’s far eastern waters. Western gray whales are an endangered species and number only 130. Seismic guns, used to find underwater oil and gas deposits off the coast of the Russian island of Sakhalin, have been shown to disturb the whales. The gray whales’ only summer feeding ground is located in a small area off of Sakhalin. Read more on that story in this BBC News…

Gray whale sighting in Mediterranean baffles scientists

gray-whale-sighting-in-mediterranean-baffles-scientists

A gray whale has been spotted in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Israel. Gray whales, thought to be extinct in the Atlantic Ocean – what to speak of the Mediterranean – are large baleen whales previously believed to only live in the North Pacific. From a BBC News report: Once, three major populations of gray (also spelt grey) whale existed: in the western and eastern North Pacific Ocean, and in the North Atlantic. However, the North Atlantic population of gray whale became extinct sometime in the 17th or 18th Century, for reasons that are not clear. Scientists are…
