A couple of weeks ago severe storms ravaged parts of the United States. The UK experienced the wettest June on record and July has been just as wet. Flash floods and freak weather have plagued the nation and more flooding is on the way. Over in Russia recent flooding in the south of the country has produced very grim results: at least 171 people have died and thousands left homeless due to flash floods. It’s not just humans that are suffering the effects of extreme weather and flooding. In northeast India severe flooding has killed around 600 animals in the…

Since it’s Friday, I thought I’d post a few videos that are sure to shock, amuse and make you go hmmm… First, a tigon has been born at a zoo China. A tigon, or tiglon, is a hybrid big cat born of a lion mother and a tiger father. Generally smaller than ligers, the better-known lion-tiger hybrid – born of a lion father and tiger mother – tigons are not necessarily sterile and have been known to produce offspring of their own. Still, tigons have weak immune systems and ‘confused genetics’ according to the following ITN News report. But who…

Merciless rainfall has been ravaging Thailand for the last six months. Cataclysmic floods have destroyed most of the rice fields, which are the backbone of this country’s economy. Currently, high water levels still remain in 17 out of the 77 provinces. According to the Bank of Thailand’s preliminary estimates, losses caused by floods range from between 1.9 to 2.6 billion dollars. The Ministry of Agriculture reported that the floods could damage more than 1 million hectares of rice fields. If that were to happen, global prices would skyrocket, as Thailand is its largest exporter in the world. Floods caused by…

The South Asian country of Bangladesh is one of the places in the world considered most vulnerable to climate change. It is also one of the poorest nations on Earth. In Bangladesh, reducing CO2 emissions and implementing cap and trade schemes are not the issue. Already used to catastrophic flooding compounded by intense poverty, Bangladeshis are in the business of climate change adaptation. This is climate change ground zero. As Himalayan glaciers melt and heavy rains perennially flood Bangladesh – a hot country of flood planes located on the Ganges River Delta – its people have no choice but to…

Pakistan, China, Australia, Afghanistan, India, Colombia, Central Europe and the US state of Iowa have all recently experienced destructive, though greatly varied, levels of flooding. According to the prime minister of Pakistan, some 20 million people have already been affected by the floods there, while the UN puts the number at 14 million. The first case of cholera has also been confirmed. Independence Day in flood-hit Pakistan Over 2,000 people have been killed in China so far this year as a result of floods, which have triggered mudslides, buried villages and washed away homes. A further 600 people are still…

From Australia to China to Pakistan to Russia and central Europe, this summer has so far been characterized by extreme weather events such as torrential rains, flooding, drought and wildfires. In the following video report by ITN News, climate scientist Thomas R. Karl explains how the current extreme weather events across the globe are linked and most likely connected to human activity. Karl is the head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Climate Services office in Washington DC. From an article by the Associated Press: Russia and central Asia this year happen to be the epicentres of very…

The worst flooding in decades hit northwestern Pakistan recently, killing over 800 people and forcing the evacuation of thousands. The total number of people affected by the flooding so far has surpassed 1 million, including those missing or infected with waterborne diseases. All it took was a few days of heavy, torrential rains and it was only a matter of time before the rivers unleashed their wrath on the villages. Earlier this week, Information Minister, Mian Iftikhar Hussain, stated: “According to initial reports received from all districts, 408 people have so far been killed [since Wednesday]” … “We fear the…

They say things always happen in three’s. So far, we’ve had a flood tear through Arkansas and also one through Oklahoma. I can only imagine where the next one will be, but here are some updates on the first two: The Arkansas death toll rose to 20 flood victims as rescuers found the body of a young girl. Search teams were not sure if the girl was the same as one reported missing by her family, so they must wait until her identity is confirmed by DNA or dental records before they make any further announcements. In addition to the…

The search continues in Arkansas after a flood swept through a campground in the state and killed at least 18 people. So far, 15 of the 18 victims have been publicly identified. The death toll includes at least 6 children—3 of which were from Louisiana—plus 3 others from Louisiana and 6 from Texas. Only 1 of the identified was actually from Arkansas. Rescue workers have been scouring the campground for signs of life or death, though with all the debris it could take days to find anyone, as many of them could be trapped under fallen trees and rocks. Some…

Climate change, by its very definition, suggests that geographical areas become hotter or drier or wetter as the case may be. Some places even become colder, while others experience severe fluctuations in weather, such as an increase in storms or droughts. Anthropogenic climate change – climate change caused by human activity – is predicted to affect weather conditions throughout the globe, the most vulnerable being hot countries that already experience extreme weather. According to the World Bank’s list of the 12 countries most at risk from climate change, Bangladesh is most susceptible to floods, Malawi to droughts and the Philippines…

A series of massive floods throughout southern China have killed 115 people and 21 more are still missing. Thirteen provinces were hit by the flood waters, including Guangdong, Sichuan and Zhejiang and the damage toll includes 80,000 homes and over $2 billion in costs. Torrential rain started more than a week ago and the impact has been felt ever since. Over 10 million people have been affected by the floods, with 685,000 of them evacuated from the areas. The flood definitely has interesting timing, though. It came after the worst drought China’s Yunnan, Guizhou, and Guangxi regions have seen in…

Parts of Europe have been ravaged by flooding lately and unfortunately, it looks like the angry waters aren’t about to let up anytime soon. It all started last weekend when heavy rains made their way across central Europe; the Czech Republic, Hungary, Serbia and Slovakia were among the places flooded. The storms knocked out electricity in some areas and made others completely unavailable via rail travel. Thousands of people have been evacuated already and a state of emergency situation was declared for part of Hungary. Poland has also received some serious damages from the flooding, too. At least 6 people…

Heavy rains in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro resulted in flooding and mudslides, killing perhaps hundreds of people. So far at least 107 have died in mudslides in the slums or favelas of Niterói, a city that lies across the bay from the well-known metropolis of Rio de Janeiro city. This raw video from AFP shows aftermath of the floods and mudslides as well as rescue and clean up efforts. Click on the below link to watch. The worst rain in Rio de Janeiro’s history took 95 lives yesterday. In less than 24 hours, the city saw 11 inches (29 cm) of rainfall and more is expected to come. Thousands of drivers were stranded overnight on roads blocked by the rising water. Landslides cut through roads and destroyed shantytowns. Homes of wood and concrete were torn apart and sent floating downhill. And at least 10,000 homes are still extremely vulnerable to damages from mudslides. Mayor Eduardo Paes called for all workers to stay home and closed all schools. He also added: “It is not advisable for people…

The Citarum River in West Java, Indonesia is one of the most toxic waterways in the world. The river is choked with industrial pollutants, garbage and sewage – yet some 30 million people depend on its waters. Villagers who live near the Citarum have no choice but to use the toxic river water for bathing and drinking. Though they boil it to kill bacteria before drinking, poisonous heavy metals and chemicals remain. Scavenging for trash and recyclables has replaced the once plentiful fishing in parts of the river. Furthermore, extensive logging and farming are contributing to flood conditions in near…

Every year, thousands of people are killed by violent acts of nature. This year, we’ve already seen earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, and volcano eruptions. Even with warning systems in place, people still fall victim to nature’s wrath. Perhaps they were unprepared or tried to play the hero. Most likely, they were misinformed or simply didn’t know what to do during such an event. I have compiled some basic information on what to do when severe weather or forces of nature are heading your way. Check it out: Earthquake As soon as you are aware that an earthquake may happen, turn off…

Over the last few years I’ve read a lot of science fiction – or rather ‘speculative fiction’ on floods. Massive, destructive, Earth-drowning floods. You know, when runaway climate change causes the polar ice caps to melt and suddenly the Statue of Liberty is nothing but a torch thrusting out from the waters of the New York Bay. I like reading about stuff like that – apocalyptic dystopia’s, disastrous future scenarios – so long as I’m warm, dry and well fed. After all, I don’t want to actually live them. So imagine how pleased I was to find that Canadian writer…

On Friday, actor/activist Sean Penn appeared on Real Time with Bill Maher to talk about the current situation in Haiti and the continued threat Haitians face from natural disasters. That’s right, the inside scoop on an immediate threat to the erstwhile darlings of the media – Haitian quake victims – brought to you by Jeff Spicoli. Haiti’s approaching rainy season brings with it clear and grave dangers in the form of floods and diseases. The problem is that Haiti has no infrastructure. It didn’t have much of one before the earthquake and now – with some 230,000 confirmed dead and…

Storms in Europe caused at least 58 deaths over the weekend. Most of the deaths occurred in France, where floods drowned victims and severe winds felled trees and sent debris flying, causing deaths and injuries. Transportation infrastructure has been severely affected and hundreds of thousands have been left without power according to a CNN report. Besides France, the storms battered Spain, Portugal, Belgium, England and Germany, claiming lives in each of these countries. A BBC News story has eyewitness reports from several of the affected sites: Everywhere was flooded. The wind had backed up a high tide which met torrential…
