Deadly explosion kills 12 at Thailand chemical plant

deadly-explosion-kills-12-at-thailand-chemical-plant

On Sunday 12 people were killed and 129 injured in a fire at a chemical plant in eastern Thailand, reports Pakistan’s Daily Times. Just over two years ago I posted about Thailand’s Map Ta Phut industrial port in Rayong province and the environmental pollution the Thai petrochemical hub has wrought on the local population. This latest deadly incident at Map Ta Phut caused hundreds of residents to evacuate the area, though loud rains prevented many people from hearing the calls to leave. This prompted Thailand’s industrial minister to call for an upgrade of Map Ta Phut’s warning systems. From the…

Japan has suffered greatly in recent days after a 9.0 earthquake struck the north of the country and triggered a tsunami which destroyed countless homes and likely killed over 10,000 people. Millions have been left without electricity, while food and water scarcity as well as lack of heat are threatening parts of northern Japan. Most of the media, however, has been gripped by the explosions and resultant radiation leaks at three reactors at a Japanese nuclear power plant called Fukushima Daiichi in Fukushima prefecture. The nuclear safety crisis that Japan now finds itself in the grip of is perhaps the…

A 15-hour fire raged from Friday night into Saturday after an oil pipeline explosion at a busy port in Dalian, China. It is not known what caused the pipeline – owned by the state-owned China National Petroleum Corp. – to explode at the port, but the fire started after a large oil tanker unloaded its cargo. Though the fire has been put out, Chinese environmental protection officials warned that the area is still unsafe due to airborne chemicals. From an Associated Press report: State-run media said the pipeline blew up Friday evening and more than 2,000 firefighters worked overnight to…

update-oil-leaking-from-damaged-louisiana-well-search-for-11-missing-workers-called-off

Some stories don’t have happy endings and unfortunately, it seems the Louisiana oil rig explosion may be one of them. The Coast Guard reported that oil is leaking from the damaged well. Officials estimated up to 1,000 barrels of oil is escaping from the well head (located on the ocean floor) every day. This comes after a brief bit of relief yesterday, when officials said there was no sign of oil leaking at all. Oh, and there’s more bad news. The search for the 11 missing workers has been called off. It would seem they are presumed to be dead…

The bad news is those 11 missing workers are still missing. The rig burned for almost 2 days straight, until it finally sank into the Gulf of Mexico yesterday morning. Although the fire was finally put out, officials were concerned that up to 336,000 gallons of crude oil could rise up from the sea floor every day. Crews are still keeping a watchful…

There is finally a glimmer of hope in finding the 4 missing miners. The rescue crew consisted of 4 teams of 8 members each and they made their way into the mine by car, foot, and rail.
