During a recent visit to Finland I discovered the most amazing thing. Apart from being a very beautiful and clean country, populated by friendly and eco-conscious citizens, Finland has one big advantage over the rest of Europe when it comes to EV’s: charging stations! Vesa Koivisto, part of Fortum, a Finnish leading energy company focusing on the Nordic countries, Russia and the Baltic Rim area, pointed out that this advantage towards EV’s has a very simple and historical foundation. Currently there are more than a million potential charging stations already in place. The stations have been set-up everywhere over the…

California automaker Elon Musk and Tesla burst on the market with an all-electric sports car, the Tesla Roadster, in early 2010. But with base prices of $101,500 in the US, £86,950 in the UK and €84,000 in continental Europe, few budget-minded aspiring green drivers can afford the EV hotrod. Now plans to sell a more moderately priced family car, or sedan (aka saloon car in the UK) called the Tesla Model S are pricking up ears. On April 26th the city of Tokyo, Japan will experiment with a new public system for charging electric vehicles. The ‘battery swap’ method robotically changes empty batteries for fully charged ones at specially equipped charging stations. This innovative system, developed by the American company Better Place, provides a much quicker way of charging electric cars than the traditional ‘plug in and wait’ option. The battery swap system will be tested for a three-month trial period by a major taxi firm located in Tokyo’s central Roppongi district. From an article in the Guardian: All of our components will be tested together…

A rather interesting partnership is happening between Microsoft and Ford Motor Co. Ford plans to create some new electric vehicles and Microsoft’s Hohm software will be used as energy management tools for the EVs. Those who end up getting one of these vehicles will be able to charge them in ways that are more affordable, responsible and efficient. If you’re curious about which Ford models will have the software, it will be added to all future plug-in hybrids and all-electric vehicles. You can expect it all to start with the new Ford Focus in 2011. On top of working on…
