A last minute deal at COP17, the UN Climate Change Conference in Durban, South Africa, managed to secure a legally binding global treaty, even amongst those most reluctant to sign on: big polluters the US, China and India. But what does the deal entail and is it really any good? First of all, the treaty is to be signed in 2015 and enforced in 2020 – too little too late according to environmentalists and most climate scientists. But what the hell do they know? The climate ‘road map’ was the brainchild and goal of the European Union, who desperately tried…

The area around the Strait of Gibraltar, particularly at the Spanish port of Algeciras on the Bay of Gibraltar, is highly industrialized and home to many polluting factories. The Strait itself is a busy thoroughfare as well as a fueling location for ships and oil and fuel tankers. This puts the Strait at a high risk for collisions and resulting spills. In fact there have been seven ‘mini spills’ during the last three years. Spanish authorities have denied allegations from environmentalists about toxic condition and local industries deny any wrongdoing or illegal activity. However, ecologists from Gibraltar commissioned an American…

The IWC definitely has its hands full with the whole whaling issue. Unfortunately for them, they can’t seem to make anyone happy. If they completely eliminate whaling altogether, the environmentalists will be happy, but the whalers won’t be. If they allow more whaling (but under stricter limits), neither the environmentalists nor the whalers will be happy. What, exactly, are they to do? Their current proposal would allow Iceland, Japan and Norway to hunt whales for 10 years, but under stricter limits that would reduce the overall catch. For example, Japan currently has a self-imposed annual quota of 935 Antarctic Minke…

I just knew everyone was going to resurrect Sarah Palin’s gung-ho pro-oil mantra from the 2008 US presidential campaign as soon as I read about Barack Obama opening up America’s coastlines for oil drilling. Apparently both John McCain and Palin tweeted it. McCain was simply supportive, while Palin snuck in some barbs about ‘job-killing’ and ‘Cap & Tax’. Sarah: chill, baby, chill. Cap and trade was renounced by interior secretary Ken Salazar and besides, isn’t this what you wanted? In contrast President Obama’s other fruitless attempts at bipartisanship, the move is being heralded as politically brilliant by some. From an…
