China may still be overwhelmingly dependent on fossil fuels for power (especially coal) but the country’s rapid economic boom and consequent insatiable hunger for energy is causing it to explore and exploit all avenues, including massive wind and solar projects. While the US is going natural gas crazy and despite plenty of solar possibilities, Australia is still in the thrall of cheap coal, China is embracing greener energy sources. Bear in mind China is still the largest emitter of greenhouse gasses and has a less-than-stellar record when it comes to toxic pollution. But the market is driving this still centrally…

A fast track approach by the US government towards certain renewable energy projects has drawn lawsuits and protests from some Native American groups and environmentalists in California. US President Barack Obama has set a goal of sourcing 80% of the country’s electricity from clean projects, but some of the projects are on lands considered sacred to Native American tribes. Environmental groups are also concerned that the projects could hard sensitive desert ecology. Government officials claim to have consulted tribal organizations and have determined that the works, such as a massive solar energy farm in Blythe, California, will not harm historical…

Deforestation continues to happen around the world at an alarming rate. However, one international company is on a mission to slow deforestation, while also earning carbon credits—but their site of choice for a tree plantation may surprise you. ECO2 Forests Inc. plans to grow up to 3 million trees over the next 7 years in the high desert of northern Nevada. The trees will be planted at irrigated tree farms and will cover up to 21 square miles north of Reno (about the size of Bermuda). The company and land owners (collectively named Jaksick Entities) have already acquired the water…

An ecological impossibility has finally become possible: the conversion of desert territory into a fertile garden area. Geoff Lawton, a researcher of the Permaculture Research institute, would be the miracle-worker this time. The given area of land was approximately 2 miles from the Dead Sea. Temperatures here would swell over 122 F (50 C) and farming conditions involved plastic strips along with massive amounts of fertilizer and synthetic chemicals. Lawton and his team had 10 acres of this salty, flat soil to run amok with. To start, they created a system that collected rainwater into water-harvesting ditches, or swales. These…
