The UK’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has dropped its controversial plan to capture buzzards and destroy their nests in order to protect pheasants. Of course the pheasants wouldn’t be safe for long as the plan was to leave the pheasants to be killed by hunters instead of buzzards. A bit of meddling on the part of Defra so rich hunters can have more of a day out. Not really ‘Department for Environment’ concern, you’d think. It gets weirder. From the Independent: The Environment Department (Defra) planned to spend up to £375,000 researching ways to keep the…

The UK government has released the Natural Environment White Paper, an official report on its environmental vision for the next 50 years. In the wake of the somewhat revolutionary report by Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) entitled the UK National Ecosystem Assessment (UK NEA), which I wrote about last Thursday, the white paper attempts to address questions of biodiversity in tandem with climate change, population, etc. From Defra’s website: We will work to improve the quality of our natural environment and will aim to halt the decline in habitats and species, degradation of landscapes and erosion of…

The second installment of Adam Curtis’ new documentary series “All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace” (recently on the BBC) focuses on how ecologists once reasoned that nature was made up of mechanistic, computer-like systems, consisting of many factors working in harmony in order to maintain balance. This view of ecosystems, which does not fully account for the chaos caused by the inherent flux of nature, has fallen out of fashion among many contemporary ecologists. They claim previous ecological theories were inspired by man-made machinery and not nature itself. Yet despite the fact that nature may be chaotic,…

A new study from the UK’s Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) reports that the state of British seas has improved since the last report in 2005. Coastal waters are getting cleaner, fish stocks are improving and species diversity in estuaries is increasing, according to the most authoritative examination ever carried out of UK seas. –Guardian Yet despite these improvements, climate change is raising sea levels, temperatures and ocean acidity; and British coasts are trashier than ever – and they’re talking about litter, not the tackiness levels of seaside ‘resorts’ like Blackpool. The changing climate, along with European…

Defra, the U.K.’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, runs a number of campaigns and projects around themes of environmental responsibility sustainable development. Here are two videos produced by Defra: The first is a very slick production about a Defra project in cooperation with the Indian government concerning India’s textile industry. Termed the U.K. – India Sustainable Development Dialogue, the aim of the project is to encourage clothing design and manufacturing with an emphasis on ethics and sustainability. The second video gives an overview of the concept of sustainable development and is a bit of a ‘corporate video’ but…

Defra’s ACT ON CO2 project is one such campaign. Below are two current TV ads and links to their respective websites, which contain helpful information about driving less and saving water – two effective ways to reduce your individual and household carbon footprints. Also included is a previous ad from an earlier version of the ACT ON CO2 campaign. ACT ON CO2 – Could…

Part of Defra’s wider ACT ON CO2 campaign, Meadow’s ads highlight the campaign ‘Save Money, Save Energy’ which aims to encourage families in Britain to be more energy smart in areas such as insulation, cars and driving, and electricity use in the home. Fans of Shane Meadows as well as those in need of cost-effective, energy-saving tips should appreciate these small pieces…
