A beach in Nordreisa, Norway is now completely blanketed in dead herring. It is unknown what caused the herring to die; whether it was tides, predatory fish or something else. Scientists would like to test the dead fish to discover the cause of death. From the Guardian: For doom-mongers, the fish were the second a sign in as many days that 2012 would live up to the apocalyptic prediction of the ancient Mayans, after hundreds of blackbirds reportedly dropped dead in Arkansas. To see a large picture of the starling scene check out this article in the Daily Mail.

‘A million seal pups dead’ – this was the headline (in Swedish) for a brief article in Friday’s Sydsvenskan, a newspaper for the southern Swedish province of Skåne. But it was enough to make me want to know more. The lack of ice cover on Canada’s east coast has contributed to massive die off of seal pups, which are born on ice sheets. If there is not enough sea ice cover or the ice melts before the pups learn how to swim, the pups drown. A study by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada determined that 45% of the…

As powerful Typhoon Roke approaches Japan’s mainland authorities are appealing to 1,3 million residents to evacuate their homes and move to higher ground. 5 people are already believed to be dead from heavy rains, flooding and strong winds, which are set to increase as the typhoon makes landfall in central Japan. From AFP: In Nagoya, in central Japan’s Aichi prefecture, officials have advised about one million residents to leave their homes because of fears that rivers might burst their banks. The storm is expected to move northwards up the coast to Tokyo. So far over 200 domestic flights have been…

Dozens of dead seals marked by strange corkscrew wounds have washed up on beaches in Norfolk, England and Fife, Scotland this year. The cause of the mysterious injuries is as of yet unknown, but they look as if they were caused by some kind of mechanical blades rather than attacks by larger bull seals. From a report in the Telegraph: A bizarre spiral of wounds on all the seals suggests that all the victims have passed through some form of sluice where they have been caught by a bladed instrument. In Norfolk, the seal deaths are being investigated by the…

It was only three months ago that southern China was suffering from its worst drought in living memory. According to a BBC report, Chinese authorities have stated that the recent flooding left 823 people dead and 437 missing, the latest count including 37 deaths after a bridge collapsed in Henan province and a further 21 who are feared dead due to mudslides in Sichuan province….

Over a period of only 10 days, more than 500 dead penguins have washed ashore on Brazilian beaches. The penguins’ bodies exhibit signs of death by starvation. During the past few years Magellanic Penguins have been discovered on of the beaches of Rio de Janeiro state with increasing frequency. For some reason – perhaps due to pollution and/or overfishing – they sometimes become lost while migrating north from Antarctica and Patagonia in search of food. But those penguins – a few hundred per year – are normally alive. From a BBC report: Thiago do Nascimento of the Peruibe Aquarium says…

One of the world’s rarest mammals moved a step closer to extinction recently. The remains of a critically endangered male Javan Rhino were found 2 weeks ago in Ujung Kulon National Park of West Java, home to some of the last remaining Javan Rhinos. The park is home to approximately 44 of these rhinos, which are also some of the last of their kind. Unlike the rhino that was poached last month at Vietnam’s Cat Loc Reserve, it is believed this most recent death was of natural causes. The head of the Rhino Foundation of Indonesia, Widodo Ramono, speculated the…

Hurricane season is officially here: 16 people in Central America were killed by tropical storm Agatha. The storm hit land between Guatemala and Mexico, with wind speeds up to 45 mph (75 kph). Although the storm weakened to a tropical depression, it was still enough to trigger deadly landslides. One in Guatemala City killed 4 people and left 11 others missing; another killed 4 children in Santa Catarina Pinula, and in Quetzaltenango a loose boulder crushed a home–killing the 2 children and 2 adults trapped inside. On top of that, an additional 10 to 20 inches of rain was expected…

A tornado that ripped through part of India last week killed at least 131 people and made any attempt of aid a real trying task. Aid and rescue workers had to make their way through uprooted trees and downed power lines blocking roads to provide food and shelter to the hundreds of thousands of victims left homeless by the storm. In West Bengal state alone, at least 250,000 people became homeless, thanks to the cyclone. Srikumar Mukherji, minister for civil defense of West Bengal, stated: “We are facing a crisis in the relief operation. There is a shortage of manpower…
