While most of the country is currently obsessed with the Gulf Coast Oil Spill disaster, Utah residents have their own oil spill to deal with. Last week, a busted Chevron pipeline sent at least 400 to 500 barrels of oil into Red Butte Creek. The spill was initially at 50 gallons of crude oil per minute before crews were able to cap the leak. Many ducks and geese were coated in oil and a park also had to be shut down. What caused the leak or the extent of environmental damage is still uncertain; however, according to Chevron spokesperson, Mark…

Oil spills are becoming all too common these days and like the Gulf Coast Spill, the recent spill in Singapore is also continuing to spread. Originally found along the southeastern shore, the oil has now traveled north and reached the Changi Beach and Chek Jawa marine reserve on Pulau Ubin Island. A NEA press release stated that the “affected portion at Changi Beach is 2,296 feet (700 m) long. Cleanup operations have begun. At Chek Jawa, some oil patches were sighted along a 150-meter stretch”. Fortunately, most of the crude oil was contained at sea, but despite cleanup efforts and…

Yesterday, a bulk carrier and oil tanker collided in waters between Singapore and Malaysia; the tanker suffered a 33 foot (10 meter) gash, which caused a spill of 2,500 tons of oil. At that point in time, port authorities of Singapore measured the spill at a size of 2.49 miles (4 km) by 0.62 miles (1 km) and located about 3.73 miles (6 km) south of southeastern Singapore. However, things have changed since then. Within a few hours of the collision, the spill estimated doubled in size to 5,000 tons of oil. To make matters worse, a crude oil slick…

It’s officially been a month since the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded and the spill is still not completely contained or even remotely cleaned up. However, after a series of containment and cleanup failures, BP finally has some success with their most recently employed siphoning system, which is removing 3,000 barrels (approximately 126,000 gallons) from the spill per day. Unfortunately, crude oil began spreading through US wetlands yesterday and still poses a threat to the Florida coast, Cuba, and possibly further out to sea. In fact, it’s already been picked up by the Loop Current and is now heading towards Florida’s…
