So Cancun wasn’t a complete disaster. After the catastrophic Copenhagen Conference of 2009, nobody was expecting any real deal to come out of COP16. But there you have it, 193 countries reached an agreement on emission reductions, forest protection, a green climate fund, the transfer and sharing of technological advancement and knowledge, and a maximum temperature rise of 2 degrees Celsius for the planet. Unfortunately, no deal was reached to force countries (developed and developing) to commit to official and internationally binding targets for emission reductions – basically the most important part of climate talks all the way back to…

Last Monday’s Climate talks in Cancun could lead to a breakthrough in the climate negotiations. China, one of the nations most looked at in Cancun, has made a proactive offer to have its personal reduction targets binding by submitting them to an international United Nations resolution by the end of the week. By doing so, China is taking on a very positive and flexible position, and maybe even providing a way out of negotiations blocked by many different factors. Offering to have its personal reduction target objectives written down in a binding international agreement puts pressure on other countries, especially…

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez blames the West for the deadly casualties that resulted from heavy rain showers in Venezuela and Colombia last week. “Criminal capitalism”, so the President said, is responsible for climate change and in turn for the death of 32 people and the loss of the homes of another 70.000 people in Venezuela. President Chavez called the natural disaster his country is facing the “unfair and cruel paradox of our planet”, blaming “the developed nations for irresponsibly shatter the environmental order, in their desire to maintain a criminal development model, while the immense majority of the earth’s people…

Last week, at the beginning of the COP 16 Climate Conference in Cancun, Google launched its Google Earth Engine, a new tool by Google.org (the technology-driven philanthropic part of the gigantic organization). The Engine, a planetary-scale platform for environmental data & analysis, merges the world’s satellite imagery (more than 25 years of data good for trillions of scientific measurements) and makes it available online. The purpose of the tool is to help scientists, conservationists, environmentalists and independent researchers to track changes in the Earth’s environment and to map trends and quantify differences to the Earth’s surface. Possible applications include mapping…

Earlier this week I told you about the European position towards the COP16 Climate Conference and the important steps the EU is trying to make in order to fight climate change and it’s consequences. I also told you that since the U.S. as been more of a blocking factor than anything else during the previous climate talks, it might be better if they would not participate in the conference at all, especially considering that even if they would agree on any of the proposed measures the U.S. Senate would never allow president Obama to sign a worldwide climate treaty. Anyway,…

European Commissioner for Climate Action Connie Hedegaard spoke during the opening day of the COP16 Climate talks in Cancun, Mexico yesterday. According to her the Cancun conference could be an important step towards a worldwide climate treaty, even if other nations like the U.S. are still not ready to play ball. It is very clear that the legally-binding deal that the EU was ready for last year and that we are still ready for will, unfortunately, not be the outcome of Cancun – not because of us, but because others are not ready for it. It is true that we…

Fifteen climate activists from Climate Justice Action are currently holding a sit in of protestation at the offices of the IETA (International Emissions Trading Association) in Brussels. They entered the carbon lobby group’s offices peacefully around 2 pm local time while others stayed outside to protest in front of the building. While COP16 is starting in Cancun (Mexico) today, the climate activists from Climate Justice Action are gearing up to raise awareness about climate change. As many others, the members of the group fear that no binding agreement will come out of this new round of United Nations Climate talks….

Last year, with all the fuss surrounding COP15 and the U.N. Climate Conference in Copenhagen, I decided to follow as much of the talks and the things going on there live through oneclimate.net, a website dedicated to social action and discussion about climate change. And I have to say I really liked it. The reporters did a fantastic job bringing as much news as possible as fast as possible. Most of the actual U.N. talks where broadcasted live too, this allowed me to understand how such talks take place and what they are really all about. Starting next week, December…

News items about carbon emissions, global warming and heating trends of our planet are hot these days. No surprise there, as scientists and world leaders are getting ready for the next round of United Nations climate talks next week in Cancun. Unfortunately, as I already pointed out before, nobody is expecting anything remotely exciting to come out of COP16. With a little bit of luck, some regulations about deforestation and some REDD financing schemes will see the light at the end of yet another useless gathering. In the meantime scientists are feeding us with more and more alarming numbers about…

According to the WMO (the United Nation’s weather agency) greenhouse gas concentrations reached 386,8 parts per million in 2009 – a record level. This increased concentration could in turn set off even greater methane (the second most important greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide) emissions from the Arctic. In a recent article we pointed out that the economic slowdown of the last couple of years did not stop greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere to increase at a rapid pace. This increase will undeniably lead to climate change and rapid and dangerous warming up of our planet. Climate scientists now warn…

Figures from the Global Carbon Project, recently featured in an article in Nature Geoscience, brings forward new figures of CO2 decrease as a result of the recent and still actual economic crisis. The carbon emission levels of today are almost at the same level again as they were before the economic crisis, with only a minor decrease of 1,3 percent in 2009 and not the 2,8 percent as anticipated by climate scientists. Originally, climate scientists where expecting bigger carbon emission reductions than 1,3 percent but that was without consideration of the upcoming nations that are industrializing at a fast pace….

Everyone remembers the COP15 Climate Conference that took place in Copenhagen in December of 2009. Well maybe you don’t remember every detail of the agenda but you surely remember the Conference was not a big success. Now the United Nations will soon be at it again, with COP16 just looming from around the corner. COP16 will be the 16th edition of the Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP). It will also hold simultaneously the 6th Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP). “Parties”…

A leaked document (a confidential UN analysis) obtained by the Guardian shows that the proposed emission cuts currently on the table at the Copenhagen Climate Conference would lead the earth to an average and global temperature rise of 3 degrees Celsius. According to the Guardian this document undermines the statements made by the governments of developed nations that they are looking to limit carbon emissions in such way that the world temperature would not increase more than 2 degrees Celsius in the next century. “Unless the remaining gap of around 1.9-4.2Gt is closed and Annexe 1 parties [countries] commit themselves…
