Copenhagen Accord may Already be a Failure

copenhagen-accord-may-already-be-a-failure

Don’t expect any kind of global treaty from future climate summits. It most likely won’t happen, or at least not hold much importance to those involved. Only 2 months since the disappointing COP15 event and the so-called Copenhagen Accord is already being swept under the rug. Drafted amid chaos as a last ditch effort by a small group of countries, the Accord is currently facing its first political test—and not doing very well thus far. A number of veterans have already stated that the Accord has very little impact or traction and is incapable of getting 194 nations to settle…

The Rachel Maddow Show: U.S. diplomacy and Inhofe’s ‘truth squad’ in Copenhagen

Here are a couple of clips from the Rachel Maddow Show relating to the erstwhile COP15 conference that was to be the environmental movement’s coup de grâce on climate change – or something like that. Rachel interviews NBC News anchor Andrea Mitchell who explains some of the difficulties and diplomatic twists that met President Obama at the climate summit in Copenhagen. With a taciturn China on one side and an ever-emasculating health care bill back in the U.S., ‘a very disappointed Barack Obama’ came out of Copenhagen with ‘something – better than nothing’. The cagey diplomacy of the climate summit…

The aftermath of COP15 – reactions to Copenhagen summit

the-aftermath-of-cop15-%e2%80%93-reactions-to-copenhagen-summit

Are you already feeling nostalgic about all the buzz that lead up to COP15? Remember the feeling of anticipation before the historic summit in Copenhagen? It was palpable – we were going to solve all of our climate’s ills. Representatives from all over the globe were going to gather and agree on a binding deal to cut greenhouse gas emissions while giving the developing world a fair shake. The leaders of nations around the globe would unite against a common foe: climate change. Take that, CO2! We want clean energy, the preservation of lush rainforests and polar bears that aren’t…

Copenhagen Climate Conference: Just one more day to seal the deal

copenhagen-climate-conference-just-one-more-day-to-seal-the-deal

The European Union is going for a reduction of 20 percent of carbon emissions by 2020 (the reference year being 1990). If a strong agreement is reached at Copenhagen that number increases to 30 percent reduction. The European Union is ready to seal the deal but skeptics tend to argue that it’s not “such a heroic act” to go for 20 percent reductions considering the strong climate legislation already in place. Add to that the “positive” consequences of the economic crisis on carbon emissions as well as the current carbon trading structures and Europe is “almost there”. So in my…

Is there anything funny about COP15?

is-there-anything-funny-about-cop15

Surely there must be some humor about climate change, environmental disasters and missed opportunities at Copenhagen amongst all the doom and gloom, denial and political deal making. Maybe I’m a jaded snob, but the guy in the polar bear suit just isn’t funny to me. I’m actually a bit tired of polar bears and pandas. They’re cute and all, but no one really cares about them that much. The emblem of environmentalism should be something that the most people with the most power hold dear. If only somehow climate change meant no more Super Bowls or an end to X-Factor…

Video from CNN – on the ground at COP15 and Fareed Zakaria on ‘global warming insurance’

Here are two segments from CNN relating to the issue of climate change and the conference in Copenhagen. The first is a brief video news report which gives a glimpse into the atmosphere inside the Bella Centre at the UN climate summit. Crowded with government and industry representatives, media, NGOs and activists, there are plenty of theatrics and even more suits and ties among the crowd of 15,000. The physical differences between the official areas of the United States and European Union when compared with those of the developing world are representative of the prevailing cleavages and contrasts we’ve been…

Al Gore speaks at Copenhagen Climate Conference

al-gore-speaks-at-copenhagen-climate-conference

Despite prior communications that he would not attend the Copenhagen Climate Conference, Al Gore did in fact attend and speak at the conference last Tuesday. His floor time centered around two main issues: the U.S. Senate having enough votes to pass a climate and energy bill next April and the urgency of a binding agreement, too critical to allow for another’s year wait for additional negotiations in December 2010 at Cop16. Al Gore urged the U.N. to move up that date to July instead of December. A number of videos of Al Gore’s speech are already available on Youtube. Here…

Strange scenes at COP15: curious news stories from the Copenhagen summit

strange-scenes-at-cop15-curious-news-stories-from-the-copenhagen-summit

So far the UN climate summit in Copenhagen has had its fair share of drama and quirkiness, from a British viscount calling climate activists ‘Hitler Youth’ to a polar bear challenging President Obama keep his promise to act on climate change. Here is a sampling of some of the more odd and less-covered bits of news surrounding COP15. Alternate climate meetings are taking place in Copenhagen, including a skeptic’s conference of ‘climate contrarians’ who are against any measures which would regulate greenhouse gas emissions. On the other end of the political spectrum, is the Klimaforum09, aka ‘the people’s climate summit’,…

Breaking: Connie Hedegaard resigns as president of COP15 with immediate effect

breaking-connie-hedegaard-resigns-as-president-of-cop15-with-immediate-effect

UPDATE: Connie Hedegaard spoke briefly with the correspondents of LinkTV at the Copenhagen Climate Conference and stated that her resignation should not been interpreted as a “shocking” event, rather as her opportunity to work in the dark rooms for the last 2 days of the conference and work on the finalization of it. Less than half an hour ago, during the COP15 UN Climate Conference, the resignation of Connie Hedegaard as president of COP15 was announced with immediate effect. The Prime Minister of Denmark will most probably replace the president of the UN Climate Conference. Connie Hedegaard will remain “on…

Klimaforum09 – the people’s alternative to the Copenhagen conference

Right now in Copenhagen there are two climate summits taking place: the one run by the UN and packed with political luminaries and prominent NGOs; and the other, ‘to represent ordinary concerned citizens from all around the world’. The second, lesser known of the two is called Klimaforum09 – the ‘Peoples Climate Summit’. It is a summit based on civil society – an alternative to the larger COP15 conference, which is grabbing most of the headlines. Author and activist Naomi Klein spoke at the opening ceremony for Klimatforum09 in Copenhagen, likening what is happening at COP15 to her concept of…

COP15 update (IUCN): Ocean acidification and mass extinction of marine species require deep and immediate cuts in emissions

cop15-update-iucn-ocean-acidification-and-mass-extinction-of-marine-species-require-deep-and-immediate-cuts-in-emissions

According to ‘Ocean acidification – the facts’, a special introductory guide for policy advisers and decision makers released today at UNFCCC COP15 in Copenhagen, increased amounts of CO2 in the atmosphere are responsible for more acidic seawater and are threatening ecosystems and species precious for our food and economy. Moreover, the increased release of CO2 in the atmosphere is also reducing the ocean’s natural ability to absorb carbon dioxide and regulate our climate. In the past, ocean acidification has been linked to mass extinctions of some species; therefore it is reasonable to assume that this current episode of CO2 increase…

Threatened Indonesian peat forests find fair-weather friend

threatened-indonesian-peat-forests-find-fair-weather-friend

‘Made up of decomposed trees and plants, sometimes as deep as 50 feet, the waterlogged land stores billions of tons of carbon dioxide. But once drained or cleared, the peat land releases many times more carbon dioxide than the deforestation of rain forests. Most experts believe that, as with rain forests, the protection of peat swamp forests will be eligible for carbon credits under the United Nations program.’ –New York Times In Indonesia, the world’s third largest emitter of greenhouse gasses, the draining of peat swamps is perilously releasing CO2. Peat swamp forests trap CO2, but the building of canals…

Here is a brief rundown about how British newspapers are covering the COP15 conference in Copenhagen. It is based on the papers’ websites, as I don’t dare exit my house to buy copies of them all due to an intense fear of increasing my carbon footprint. Richard Black, environment correspondent for the BBC News website has a ‘COP15 Copenhagen climate summit’ blog which you can read here. The London Times Copenhagen Diary is a collection of interesting, lesser known facts and trivia connected to the happenings surrounding the COP15 conference. The Guardian‘s Mathew Weaver has a ‘liveblog’ that details the…

Breaking news from Copenhagen: Five top stories from COP15

The G77 block of developing nations, chaired by Sudan’s Lumumba Stanislaus Di Aping accused developed nations of ‘carbon colonialism’ by giving an unfair share of allotted emissions to rich countries. The reaction by developing nations is in response to a leaked draft proposal, which has been dubbed the ‘Danish text’. Read about it in the London Times and in the Guardian. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is ‘fighting to ‘make up for lost time’. As well as announcing plans to adopt stricter fuel economy standards and the development of renewable energy projects, the EPA officially declared on Monday…

Copenhagen climate change conference: ‘Fourteen days to seal history’s judgment on this generation’

We do so because humanity faces a profound emergency. Unless we combine to take decisive action, climate change will ravage our planet, and with it our prosperity and security. The dangers have been becoming apparent for a generation. Now the facts have started to speak: 11 of the past 14 years have been…

Media coverage of Copenhagen: Climategate in the headlines

media-coverage-of-copenhagen-climategate-in-the-headlines

If so-called ‘climate skeptics’ think that the mainstream media is ignoring the story of the emails that were either leaked or hacked from the Climate Research Unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia, then they are obviously not watching television news broadcasts or reading major publications. Climategate is everywhere. If the Copenhagen summit is mentioned, so naturally is the Climategate scandal. Amazing what the words ‘trick’ and ‘hide the decline’ can do amongst a sea of otherwise boring, presumably impenetrable scientific language – all apparently camouflage for the ‘smoking gun’ that was embodied in one deadly sentence. The liberal,…

“Please help the world” – Copenhagen opening film

The UNFCCC opened on December 7th, 2009 in Copenhagen, Denmark with a moving four minute film featuring a girl who has a nightmare about natural disasters brought on by climate change. “We have made a film which speaks to the heart rather than to the brain,” says the Danish director of the film Mikkel Blaabjerg Poulsen (from the COP15 blog). Watch the film below and see what you think – or feel – for yourself. I dare you not to get a little misty-eyed. “Please Help the World”, film from the opening ceremony of the United Nations Climate Change Conference…

Environmental news from Portugal: Lost in the shadow of Copenhagen

environmental-news-from-portugal-lost-in-the-shadow-of-copenhagen

Portugal is not a country you often find taking up headlines in major international news sources. But the small Iberian nation has recently been home to two major events focusing on the subject of the environment, especially sustainable development. From November 20th – 22nd Portugal’s capital city of Lisbon hosted Planet Earth Lisbon 2009, or PEL2009, a conference celebrating the end of the International Year of Planet Earth. A project by the Earth Sciences for Society, the International Year of Planet Earth is actually three years long, lasting from 2007 to 2009 and ‘aims to ensure greater and more effective…
