Last month, there was a Solar Decathlon in Europe. It all started in 2007, when the US Government and the Government of Spain’s Ministry of Housing signed an agreement to organize a sustainable solar architecture competition in Europe. The US actually started having Solar Decathlon competitions in 2002. This year’s Europe competition included 19 top universities around the world and was held in Madrid, in June. The main purpose of the competition was to advance “the knowledge and dissemination of industrialized, solar, and sustainable housing”. There are also 4 objectives that apply to the Decathlon: 1. To raise participating students’…

When it comes to medical care, most of us have no idea how easy we really have it. People will complain about waiting in the emergency room or waiting room area (it has that name for a reason); they’ll complain about insurance or medical bill costs; and they’ll complain about the latest health reform. Guess what. Some people in the world don’t have access to any of that. Some people don’t even have access to the most basic and common vaccines. However, Appropriate Technology Collaborative (ATC) is trying to change that—and you can help. You see, a lot of vaccinations…

In light of BP’s repeated failures when it comes to dealing with the Gulf oil spill disaster, LogoMyWay.com has decided to hold a contest. They (like many other people) are of the mind that BP is really in need of a new logo. Their current logo you can check out here. Call me crazy, but that image does not seem fitting for a company responsible for the worst oil spill in US history. So, I’ll get to the point. The BP Logo Redesign Contest wants you to redesign BP’s logo in a creative way that will be a strong brand…

The Gulf Coast Oil Spill has sure earned BP a lot of negative and bizarre attention. After a month of dealing with the issue, their methods are still being attacked by environmental groups and the media. The most recent issue concerns their latest siphoning method of cleaning up the spill, which dropped from 92,400 gallons per day to 57,120 gallons in the last 24 hours. Apparently, the issue is also enough to upset the average US citizen to the point of near-bloodshed. A Pennsylvania man threatened his girlfriend with a meat cleaver over an argument about the BP oil spill….

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology is once again holding their annual Funky Nests in Funky Places contest. What is this contest? Well, typically, a bird will build a nest in a tree, shrub, or other form of natural habitat; however, when it comes to urban areas, the birds have to be a bit more creative with their choice of housing. The main focus of the contest is on photos of bird nests in strange places, such as in an old shoe, sign, or traffic light (one bird had such a nest not far from here a few months ago). They…

Do you ever have those days when you simply want to get away from it all? I know I definitely do. Unfortunately, too many things tend to get in the way of going anywhere, such as work, vacation expenses, and other home-based responsibilities. On top of that, if you are dedicated to the green lifestyle, there is all the searching you have to do for the right hotel and transportation, not to mention planning an itinerary (unless you simply go on spontaneity). Sometimes, taking a vacation can seem more trouble than it’s worth…well, unless you happen to win the latest…

Valentine’s Day is tomorrow and for some groups, it comes with a new twist this year. The Center for Biological Diversity plans to distribute 100,000 free Endangered Species Condoms. They come in 6 different packages with original artwork and slogans. A few that you can get your hands on include: “Wrap with care, save the polar bear”, “Wear a jimmy hat, save the big cat” (jaguar), and “Wear a condom now, save the spotted owl”. Along with this distribution, they have also created a website specifically for the cause—EndangeredSpeciesCondoms.com. The website highlights information on human overpopulation and the impact it…
