A series on meetings entitled ‘The Health and Security Perspectives of Climate Change – How to secure our future wellbeing’ was held yesterday in London at the headquarters of the British Medical Association. The view put forth by both human health and military experts at the conference is that climate change is the biggest current threat to both public health and security. Climate change is driving mass migration and resource depletion, both of which can cause and exacerbate armed conflict, as well as the spread of infectious diseases, hunger and malnutrition. Besides the usual urges for national governments to reduce…

Researchers met last week at the NEOBIOTA conference in Copenhagen, Denmark to discuss the problem of invasive species in Europe. The 6th NEOBIOTA conference called on the EU to protect Europe’s native species against animals, plants and microorganisms that are deemed a threat. The participants are demanding that the EU enact legislation similar to that of New Zealand and Australia. Invasive species – which have, according to research, increased by 76% over the last 30 years – cost Europe an estimated €12 billion every year. A European inventory in 2008 found more than 10,000 alien species in Europe, with 1,300…

Tackling climate change through forest restoration is the theme at this year’s Commonwealth Forestry Conference, currently taking place in Edinburgh, Scotland. 40 countries are represented at the conference, all from the vestiges of the once great British Empire, upon which the sun used to never set. The Prince of Wales has even addressed the conference – albeit by video – blaming agribusiness for ‘alarming’ deforestation rates. According to a report in The Scotsman, the secretary general of the Commonwealth, Kamalesh Sharma, referred to deforestation as ‘environmental vandalism’ and stressed that the time to act was now. He is quoted in…

At a UN climate conference in Oslo, Norway this week, nations agreed on an increase in aid from rich to poor countries to protect the Earth’s forests and curb global carbon emissions. UN figures state that deforestation and forest degradation are responsible for 17% global emissions. Preserving forests is widely regarded as the least expensive way to cut these emissions. From a Reuters report: The Oslo Climate and Forest Conference, attended by representatives of 52 countries, agreed on a non-binding framework to funnel aid promised by the rich world and set up monitoring standards to ensure money flows are based…

In terms of development and environment, global capitalism can be compared to a dinner where a rich few eat all the food and leave the bill with their poor, unwilling hosts after tossing a stingy tip and some dinner notes onto the table. The colonized, indigenous and poorest peoples of the world are the ones who suffer most from climate change, do the least to cause it and hold the least power to stop it. The UNFCCC in Copenhagen last December may have called attention to the lower tier of the developing world, but it did not give them much…

Bolivia has been hosting an international summit, named the World People’s Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth, in the city of Cochabamba. The talks began on the 19th and finish today. From a report by the Environmental News Service: More than 20,000 indigenous, environmental and civil society delegates from 129 countries were in attendance as President Morales welcomed them to the conference at a soccer stadium in the village of Tiquipaya on the outskirts of the city of Cochabamba. The tone in Bolivia is decidedly political, with an emphasis on nature, poor and indigenous peoples and…

The World People’s Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth begins on Monday, April 19th in Cochabamba, Bolivia. The summit, which is not under the auspices of the UN, is seen as the alternative to Copenhagen, with more of a focus on poor peoples, social justice and environmental activism. In addition to scientists, representatives of indigenous peoples, NGOs and government officials, the conference will welcome prominent authors, academic luminaries and Hollywood celebrities. The final group an obvious and understandable strategy to garner valuable publicity for issues that were buried during Copenhagen. Big names expected at the Bolivia…

Recently, 13 Asian countries held a conference to determine the fate of tigers and how to proceed in helping them recover. Along with Russia, the nations vowed to double the number of wild tigers (currently a rough 3,200), take more serious action against poaching, and prohibit the building of any road or bridge that could harm the tigers’ habitat. Unfortunately, this vow does not include any money to fund their newly pledged conservation efforts. Instead, they plan to approach international groups, such as World Bank, for money and also to tap money from ecotourism, carbon financing, and infrastructure projects. Along…

In an effort to help save the tigers, 13 countries are currently convening at the first Ministerial Conference on Tiger Conservation. Their aim is to convince other countries to pledge to help the tigers, by setting population targets to help increase their numbers and also providing more funds towards tiger conservation efforts. The 13 countries involved with this meeting are: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Russia, Thailand…

Rachel interviews NBC News anchor Andrea Mitchell who explains some of the difficulties and diplomatic twists that met President Obama at the climate summit in Copenhagen. With a taciturn China on one side and an ever-emasculating health care bill back in the U.S., ‘a very disappointed Barack Obama’ came out of Copenhagen with ‘something – better than nothing’. The cagey diplomacy of the climate summit…

Despite prior communications that he would not attend the Copenhagen Climate Conference, Al Gore did in fact attend and speak at the conference last Tuesday. His floor time centered around two main issues: the U.S. Senate having enough votes to pass a climate and energy bill next April and the urgency of a binding agreement, too critical to allow for another’s year wait for additional negotiations in December 2010 at Cop16. Al Gore urged the U.N. to move up that date to July instead of December. A number of videos of Al Gore’s speech are already available on Youtube. Here…

The second, lesser known of the two is called Klimaforum09 – the ‘Peoples Climate Summit’. It is a summit based on civil society – an alternative to the larger COP15 conference, which is grabbing most of the headlines. Author and activist Naomi Klein spoke at the opening ceremony for Klimatforum09 in Copenhagen, likening what is happening at COP15 to her concept of…
