It’s a good guess that most people do not sit down with the latest scientific paper or magazine and read about the effects of global warming over afternoon tea. If we did, we may need something stronger than tea! After all, the words Global Warming is akin to Bigfoot for most people – they have a vague impression that it’s big, scary and may or may not exist in reality. Unfortunately, that’s where the similarity ends. No movies have been made so far to immortalize global warming. A few documentaries are all it has to its credit, whereas big foot…

There is something about political and economic jargon that causes the eyes to glaze over and the brain to tune out. Accurate, comprehensive explanations come too late and are either too complex or simply too removed from most people’s experiences and day-to-day lives to make sense for them. This may be a fundamental problem of democracy, of which populist politicians take full and unscrupulous advantage. Maybe I’m being overly cynical, but it’s plain to me that nuance and accuracy do not sell to the general public and this can result some incompetent and dangerous people in positions of power. And…

We already know that airplanes emit a lot of CO2. But how much of an environmental impact does flying have when compared to other modes of transport? What about offsetting the carbon footprint of flying by participating in ecotourism or running planes on biodiesel? Besides CO2, airplanes emit water vapor, nitrous oxides, sulfate, and soot. Since this takes place much higher in the atmosphere than emissions that come from other sources, their effects are more harmful. Additionally, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimates that the climate impact of aircraft is between two and four times higher than just…

The recession may be a blight on many job seekers and businesses, but it seems to be doing wonders for CO2 emissions. According to a study conducted by the International Energy Agency (IEA), greenhouse gas emissions have fallen drastically as a result of the world’s economic troubles. Not to give all the credit to financial troubles, governmental policies also contributed to 25% of the decline; a first time accomplishment for them. The decline in CO2 emissions was so significant, that it tops any others that have happened in the past 40 years, and is expected to fall at least 2.6%…

Numerous environment-related programs are being implemented by non-profit organizations, private corporations involved in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), government agencies, and concerned individuals. Among these efforts include educating the public about the science of climate change; its effects to the environment and human lives; and how to reduce carbon footprint. With the proliferation of information about climate change, carbon dioxide emissions, carbon footprint, etc., many have a more or less concrete idea of what is happening to Mother Earth, and who and what is responsible for her degradation. We know that this is a problem that needs a sense of urgency…
