The once- mythical Northeast Passage, which links Asia to Europe via the Arctic, is now a reality, thanks to climate change. Previously, the route was only available during warmer seasons, about 2 months out of the year and even then, ice breakers were utilized to allow ships to pass through. However, recent satellite pictures have shown that it is now possible to traverse this route without the need for additional equipment. Two German commercial ships, the MV “Beluga Fraternity” and the MV “Beluga Foresight”, began their journey from Vladivostok to Novvy Port last August 21, 2009. Before the two ships…

Climate Change, Videos & Documentaries, Aug 22nd, 2009,
I deeply admire documentaries that talk about the perils of climate change and its impacts on our environment, health, personal and social lives, occupation, and almost everything that deals with our existence as humans. I was not initially impressed by the emergence of issues on global warming, but after some “coercion” from my former colleagues to watch “An Inconvenient Truth,” I finally gave in. I have not always been the here-I-am-and-listen-to-me-or-else-activist, but I have to admit that the impacts of climate change on our planet are increasingly getting more soap-opera-like, or for lack of a better term, DRAMATIC. Hence, I…

Climate Change, Politics, Aug 21st, 2009,
After meetings in Beijing, Tony Blair, the former British Prime Minister, urged for climate treaty negotiations as China would appear to be committed to stronger steps to contain swelling greenhouse gas emissions. After his talks with Premier Wen Jiabao, Blair said on Thursday that climate change had moved closer to the heart of China. As the world’s biggest emitter of greenhouse gases (from human activity) China is starting to explore goals for its next five-year development plan starting from 2011. The former British Prime Minister said the country was likely to adopt stronger measures to rein in emissions of carbon…

“Smoking can kill you,” said then-16-year-old model/actress Brooke Shields in a 1981 US Congressional hearing, “and if you’ve been killed, you’ve lost a very important part of your life.” Everybody knows that smoking is bad for you, even young Ms. Shields whose vacuous words have been circulating the Internet for years. Smoking can cause heart attacks, lung diseases and all kinds of cancers. Yes, smoking is harmful to your health, yet people continue to smoke. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that over 15 billion cigarettes are consumed each day. Smokers insist that they are not harming anyone else, except…

Last summer I happened to see an exceptionally interesting episode of the BBC News interview program HARDtalk hosted by Stephen Sackur. It was one of several installments of HARDtalk dealing with topics concerning the environment, climate change and specifically man-made greenhouse gas emissions. One portion in particular called attention to the often conveniently ignored opinion that the livestock farming industry – and meat eating especially – are the practices which contribute most to global warming or climate change over the shortest period of time. This means that their effects are more immediate and more severe than other, far more publicized…
