If you were a kid in the 70s or 80s you might remember those gaudy, velvety posters of rock bands that glowed in the dark with the aid of a “black light”. I didn’t smoke pot or anything (I was 11 for God’s sake) but I had a black light Led Zeppelin poster on the wall under my loft bed next to my beanbag chair. I’d sit there, in the dark and listening to my Walkman, gazing in wonder. Why did my black light make it glow? Now they’ve done it with cats. It’s all in the interest of HIV/AIDS…

On an episode of the UK comedy quiz show QI it was once mentioned that the worst thing you could do for the environment was own a pet. The show claimed that a large dog, for example, creates more greenhouse gases than an SUV (from its meat consumption presumably, rather than its biological functions). I’m assuming the numbers referenced in QI were crunched based on averages, and did not account for individual lifestyle choices of pet owners, like becoming vegetarian, not having kids, feeding their pets home grown organic mealworms, keeping their cats locked inside or whatever. Dogs and cats are plagued by flea and tick problems every year. Unfortunately, the very products that are supposed to provide our animal friends with relief from those pests are actually causing them more harm than good. The Environmental Protection Agency receives thousands of complaints every year about flea and tick control products, especially the “spot-on” ones. These products, which claim to be able to rid the animal of any fleas, ticks, larvae and so forth, have actually triggered some rather bad health problems in a lot of animals. My dog was hit by a car last week. The incident resulted in her needing two splints: one for a dislocated elbow and one for a broken joint. Being that she’s lost some use of her legs, we’ve had to help carry her around.
