IPCC Climate scientists have already stated that air travel contributes to climate change though emitting CO2, water vapor, nitrous oxides, sulfate aerosols and soot. Each of these varieties of airplane emissions factor into global warming in different ways, including short and long-term warming effects. A new scientific paper from Norway compares the climate impact of different modes of both passenger and freight transport. The study puts ocean and rail as having the lowest impact in terms of freight, with light trucks and air having the highest across the board. In the case of passenger travel, ‘rail, coach or two- and…

In a UN-sponsored event designed to popularize electric vehicles, the Zero Race solar car rally began on Monday in Geneva, Switzerland. Participating in the race are teams from South Korea, Australia, Switzerland and Germany. They will attempt to travel around the world in 80 days, through 16 countries. Zero Race organizer Louis Palmer has already driven around the world in his ‘Solar Taxi’, through 38 countries during 18 months. From a CNET News article: With this race we want to show that seven billion people on this planet need renewable energy and clean mobility. –Louis Palmer For more on the…

The government of Spain’s electric vehicle scheme has so far failed to take off. Spain’s plans to fill its roads with electric cars, which can top up at service stations and converted phone booths across the country, have hit a bump in the road. So far only 16 electric cars have been sold in Spain this year. This is a 16-fold improvement over last year, but far short of the goal of 2,000 for this year and seems destined to fail to meet next year’s 20,000 or 2014’s 100,000 targets. Yet the Spanish government-backed Wind Power and Electric Vehicles group…

Lithium-ion batteries are being touted by US President Barack Obama as the most efficient way to electrify motor vehicles. A mass shift from fossil fuel and conventional combustion engines towards battery-powered electric cars may also receive a boost due to the unfortunate recent events in the Gulf of Mexico. From an article on stockhouse.com: In 2009, alone, the U.S. federal government granted over US$25 billion in loans to automobile and battery makers. Such initiatives promise to help President Obama accomplish his well-publicized mandate to usher-in one million electric vehicles in the U.S. by 2015. A move away from fossil fuels…

This week, I am covering the final segment of Green Home Improvements You Can Do for Free. So far, I have told you ways you can go green in the bathroom, kitchen, home office, lawn and garden, while doing cleaning or laundry, and other general household improvements. There’s only a small bit left to cover this week, so I’m just going to get right to it. Check out the list!: Transportation: Any time you are travelling within a reasonably short distance from your home (up to 5 miles), opt for riding your bike when you can instead of taking the…

I’ve assumed that transport via boat, whether shipping goods or people, is less polluting and has a lower carbon footprint than flying or road freight, for example. Not so, according to both scientific research and inside information from the maritime shipping industry. While diesel cars – once known as smelly, noisy polluters – have relatively cleaned up their act to the level of standard petrol or gasoline-fuelled cars, the heavy-duty diesel and low-grade fuel oil engines that power ships are a scourge on the environment and human health. From an article in the Economist: Research by James Corbett of the…

I am not exactly fond of cars or driving, but many people around the world are. These days, it’s become more common for a car company to push out lines of hybrid vehicles, electric vehicles, or some other form of “green” transportation. While this step is nice and all, it made me wonder: what else are all the car companies doing to help the environment? If you were to consider everything that goes into putting a car on the road—from mining and drilling for resources to fuel and build the car, to building all the offices, plants, dealerships, parking lots,…

On April 26th the city of Tokyo, Japan will experiment with a new public system for charging electric vehicles. The ‘battery swap’ method robotically changes empty batteries for fully charged ones at specially equipped charging stations. This innovative system, developed by the American company Better Place, provides a much quicker way of charging electric cars than the traditional ‘plug in and wait’ option. The battery swap system will be tested for a three-month trial period by a major taxi firm located in Tokyo’s central Roppongi district. From an article in the Guardian: All of our components will be tested together…

2010 means electric cars will soon be humming around America’s city streets, emitting nothing into the air but a sense of self-satisfaction and superiority. Even Prius drivers will hang their heads in shame, outdone and one upped in the latest ‘whose got the newest green toy’ competition. Of course, most parts of the U.S. will have a bit of respite before the coming vehicular revolution kicks into top gear, and can continue belching noxious fumes with impunity for a little while longer. But not California. Several thousand Leafs made in Japan will be delivered to metropolitan areas in California, Arizona,…

Driving cars is dangerous and bad for the environment. Even hybrid cars with snappy, ecologically conscious bumper stickers annoyingly pasted on their backsides still spew out harmful emissions and run over baby deer. Put a testosterone-addled young man in an automobile and you’ve got a seriously aggressive douche-bag operating a highly deadly machine. Or am I the only one whose been enjoying a nice weekend walk through the center of town, shopping, smelling flowers, grinning from ear to ear, when suddenly tires screech, deafening engines rev and loud techno music blares? I didn’t think so. And how often do you…
