A lot of effort, expense and time can go into planning a business event, whether it’s a large corporate affair or a small to medium business event. Travel expenses, display banners, promotional gifts and catering can all add up financially, but they can also be a major source of carbon emissions. In 2009, heating and lighting of venues, transport to and from events and promotional materials to name a few were responsible for emitting 60,000 tons of CO2 in the UK alone. However, with careful organisation and planning this could be reduced significantly. Reduce unnecessary transport. If possible arrange for…

European Commissioner for Climate Action Connie Hedegaard spoke during the opening day of the COP16 Climate talks in Cancun, Mexico yesterday. According to her the Cancun conference could be an important step towards a worldwide climate treaty, even if other nations like the U.S. are still not ready to play ball. It is very clear that the legally-binding deal that the EU was ready for last year and that we are still ready for will, unfortunately, not be the outcome of Cancun – not because of us, but because others are not ready for it. It is true that we…

Recently Facebook launched their Green on Facebook page in an effort to green up their image after the big dirty coal data center debacle of earlier this year. According to their Facebook page, the Green on Facebook is run by Facebook and will highlight our efforts to be a green and sustainable global citizen. Together with 56.000 others, I became a fan op the page, and as many others I’m sure I’m pretty disappointed with the content of it. The wall is filled with links to various articles about different environmental topics, but very little information is available about Facebook’s…

According to a recent article in Science Daily every living person emits about two tons of carbon dioxide a year just from eating. The study considers the eating process from the time food is produced to when the human body has fully processed it. Doing so, the CO2 emissions from human eating account for 20% of total yearly carbon emissions, at least in Spain. The study, by the Spanish Universidad de Ameria, also confirms for the first time that human waste contributes to water pollution, primarily with nitrogen and phosphorus. Read the full story on the Science Daily website.

As an opening statement from a current venue by The Geological Society in London, geologists have warned about the consequences of our current high-level greenhouse gas emissions. According to them, if we keep on pumping greenhouse gases into the air as we are doing now, the earth will need no less than 100.000 years to recover from global warming. By studying rock sediments, scientists have been able to assess the link between greenhouse gas increase and temperature change on our planet. According to professor Jim Zachos, a gigantic volcanic eruption that occurred about 55 million years ago released close to…

For some, dealing with climate change can be a very dirty business. There are skeptics to deal with, slander, grueling expeditions and tedious research projects. In some cases, all that dirty work actually involves dirt itself, as a group of Finnish researchers recently found out. It would seem that these researchers discovered that soil emissions may contribute more to global warming than previously thought. In a statement, the Finnish Environment Institute said: “A Finnish research group has proved that the present standard measurements underestimate the effect of climate warming on emissions from the soil.” … “The error is serious enough…

A leaked document (a confidential UN analysis) obtained by the Guardian shows that the proposed emission cuts currently on the table at the Copenhagen Climate Conference would lead the earth to an average and global temperature rise of 3 degrees Celsius. According to the Guardian this document undermines the statements made by the governments of developed nations that they are looking to limit carbon emissions in such way that the world temperature would not increase more than 2 degrees Celsius in the next century. “Unless the remaining gap of around 1.9-4.2Gt is closed and Annexe 1 parties [countries] commit themselves…

‘In short, China has gone from a slow-growing, insular country to the world’s second-largest economy and largest exporter in a single generation […] Commensurate with China’s economic growth has been its growth in CO2 emissions.’ –Kurt Zenz House, Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists Kurt Zenz House is a fellow at MIT, where he ‘studies and develops methods for large-scale capture and storage of human-made carbon dioxide’. He has a bachelor’s in physics from the Claremont Colleges and a PhD in geoscience from Harvard. Esquire named House among the Best and Brightest for 2007 and he is one of Technology Review…

According to a recent announcement made by the EPA, greenhouse gases do, indeed, have a negative effect on human health. We already know the fumes from fossil fuels and the like can cause problems, ranging from asthma to migraines. Now, the EPA is pushing the fact that CO2 and other such pollutants should be regulated under the Clean Air Act. It’s a good thing they made this finding, too. According to a Supreme Court ruling, the EPA was required to find that CO2 and 5 other greenhouse gases are definitely an endangerment to human health before they were allowed to…

Have you ever heard those tales of how dumping toxic waste into water will cause the aquatic life to mutate into something out of science fiction? Well, apparently marine life as of late are going through some shocking changes, and while it may not be like something out of the twilight zone, it sure has baffled scientists. Acidification of the ocean has been on the rise, thanks to increasing levels of CO2 in the atmosphere. The CO2 dissolves in the water, which makes the water more acidic. This decreases the number of carbonate ions in the ocean, which some marine…

According to ‘Ocean acidification – the facts’, a special introductory guide for policy advisers and decision makers released today at UNFCCC COP15 in Copenhagen, increased amounts of CO2 in the atmosphere are responsible for more acidic seawater and are threatening ecosystems and species precious for our food and economy. Moreover, the increased release of CO2 in the atmosphere is also reducing the ocean’s natural ability to absorb carbon dioxide and regulate our climate. In the past, ocean acidification has been linked to mass extinctions of some species; therefore it is reasonable to assume that this current episode of CO2 increase…

‘Made up of decomposed trees and plants, sometimes as deep as 50 feet, the waterlogged land stores billions of tons of carbon dioxide. But once drained or cleared, the peat land releases many times more carbon dioxide than the deforestation of rain forests. Most experts believe that, as with rain forests, the protection of peat swamp forests will be eligible for carbon credits under the United Nations program.’ –New York Times In Indonesia, the world’s third largest emitter of greenhouse gasses, the draining of peat swamps is perilously releasing CO2. Peat swamp forests trap CO2, but the building of canals…

***UPDATE – ‘Four days ahead of the Copenhagen climate summit, India on Thursday announced it will reduce its emission intensity by 20-25% by 2020′ (source: The Times of India) India is the world’s fourth highest emitter of greenhouse gasses and is poised to move up in those rankings as it further develops and industrializes. According to U.S. State Department figures India’s middle class, who already number 50 million, is projected to grow by a factor of ten by the year 2025. Though millions of people pulling themselves out of poverty is certainly good news, as far as emissions, energy and…

China has recently announced its offer to pledge 40% – 45% reduction of its energy intensity by 2020 in the upcoming climate negotiations in Copenhagen. Energy intensity refers to energy output per unit of gross domestic product. With deep-seated habits of secrecy, China is having a hard time convincing the international community of its intention to honor the pledge they made recently. Unlike emissions from smokestacks and tailpipes, energy intensity is difficult to gauge. Climate negotiators need to evaluate if the method proposed by the Chinese is measurable, reportable and verifiable. Read the full article here By Maria Belgado

A New York Times story from November 17th explains that ‘carbon offset’ programs run by airlines and travel companies are less about neutralizing the large amounts of CO2 produced by air travel and more about assuaging any pangs of ‘climate guilt’ that might go with it. The fact is that flying emits a lot of greenhouse gases and at the moment there isn’t much to be done about it – except to not fly. In theory, carbon offset travel is a good idea: the customers voluntarily pay a bit extra for their flights and that money is used to do…

A lot of people may wish to believe that you can’t put a price on anti-green living. Well, guess what: if you live under the rule of the Dutch government, you may be sorely mistaken. The Dutch government is now working towards the possibility of a “green tax” in order to cut down on carbon emissions. This is particularly aimed at those who drive: for every mile you drive, you will be taxed. According to the transport ministry: “Each vehicle will be equipped with a GPS device that tracks how many kilometers are driven and when and where. This data…

‘No one can do everything – but everyone can do something.’ – Sofie Österheim, Malmö, Sweden (from sydsvenskan.se) An article in the Swedish newspaper Sydsvenskan explains how so-called ‘light green’ habits can make a difference when it comes to your personal carbon footprint. For example, take cycling instead of driving: A bike with a wire bicycle basket, which can be installed on both the front and back, is a great way to be Green and transport groceries or other goods. It’s not only much more environmentally friendly to cycle rather than drive, it’s also a great way to keep…

The world is in trouble—and more so than originally thought. Yes, over the past couple of years we have all heard about the economic and environmental problems that we face (whether people choose to believe it or not). However, it seems things may be worse than previously anticipated. A recent study—conducted by a research team associated with the Global Carbon Project—found that global CO2 emissions created from fossil fuels have gone up 29% between 2000 and 2008. Coal seems to be the main culprit in this case: it has surpassed oil as a use of fuel, is an extreme pollutant…
