New Vehicle Emissions Standards to be Set for US and Canada

new-vehicle-emissions-standards-to-be-set-for-us-and-canada

Residents of Canada and the US can expect some changes in future vehicles and their emissions. What kind of changes? Well, check this out: All cars and trucks are required to have an average of 35.5 miles per gallon (15 km per liter) by 2016. Average vehicle emissions will be limited to 295 grams of CO2 per mile by 2012 and then down to 250 grams by 2016. The US will save 1.8 billion barrels of oil and 960 million tons of CO2 emissions over the life of the vehicles—that would be like taking 58 million cars off the road…

World’s Largest Douglas Fir Tree may be in Danger

worlds-largest-douglas-fir-tree-may-be-in-danger

Over the last few weeks, Vancouver was home to the 2010 Winter Olympics. Polar Bear campaigns, LEED certified venues, and e-waste medals were reported in the news, along with quite the number of victories and tragedies that happened this year. Even though the Olympics have finally come to an end, it does not mean that Vancouver’s environmental troubles are over. One particular tree is a prime example of this. If you’ve ever been to Vancouver Island, you may have been lucky enough to visit the famous Red Creek Fir Tree. Located in Port Renfrew, this tree is the world’s largest…

UK firms catch heat from Canada’s tar sands

uk-firms-catch-heat-from-canadas-tar-sands

British companies with financial ties to Canada’s controversial tar sands oil operations will face considerable pressure this week from UK environmental lobbies and investors with ethical concerns. The tar sands of Alberta, Canada are the world’s largest deposits of bitumen, a heavy, black form of crude oil extracted via surface mining. Generally considered to be of more harm to the environment than conventional oil drilling, tar sand mining has taken a heavy toll on Alberta’s air, land, water, wildlife and people. According to an article in the Guardian, ethical and environmental groups opposed to British investment in the tar sands…

Support Team Polar Bear at the Winter Olympics!

support-team-polar-bear-at-the-winter-olympics

This year’s Winter Olympics has a new team to contend with. However, you won’t find them on the ice, snow, or sliding track. Team Polar Bear is part of the latest campaign launched by Canada-based environmental group, Dogwood Initiative. If you’ve seen the latest Canadian 2 dollar coin, you’ll know it has an image of a polar bear on it. The group plans to distribute over 100,000 decals of a polar bear in distress standing on a melting patch of sea ice. These decals will be distributed during the Olympics as part of the group’s Save Winter Campaign and they…

Tar sands: China invests in Canadian oil as U.S. moves out

tar-sands-china-invests-in-canadian-oil-as-u-s-moves-out

The Canadian province of Alberta is home to a particularly dirty kind of oil field: so called ‘Tar Sands’. The world’s largest source of bitumen – a heavy, black form of crude oil extracted by surface mining – is located in the northeastern portion of the province. Most of the oil mined from Canada’s tar sands is destined for refineries in the United States, but with American companies shying away from the oil sands due to environmental pressure and China moving in, things look to be changing. An article in the Guardian explains: China’s growing investment in the tar sands…

Olympic Medals are Going Green

olympic-medals-are-going-green

In an effort to partake in more sustainable and green practices, this year’s Olympic medals are made from e-waste. E-waste is another term for electronic waste. It includes everything from laptops to televisions to mp3 players and so forth. The medal making process started with the extracting of gold, silver and copper in 2006, by the Teck Resources mining company. The company plans to process 15,000 tons of e-waste this year—a major increase from the 2,100 tons processed 4 years ago. Designed by Omer Arbel and Corrine Hunt, the medals include imagery of Vancouver’s coast and orca whales. You can…

This coming weekend marks the beginning of the 2010 Winter Olympics. They are set to happen in Vancouver, Canada, and will last for the rest of this month. Over 2,000 athletes from at least 80 different nations are expected to participate in these series of world renowned (and extremely cold) events. Vancouver—an area that is typically used to cold winter weather—has been dealing with a bit of warmth lately. High temperatures this week are expected to range between 40 and 50 degrees F (4 to 10 C). Those of you who are used to snow and cold winter temperatures may…

Salting roads kills frogs and other wildlife

salting-roads-kills-frogs-and-other-wildlife

Frogs can’t seem to get a break. Yet another enemy of the vulnerable amphibians – at least in cold countries – is sodium chloride, or NaCl, which is used in many parts of the world to grit icy roads in the winter in order to make them more drivable. The problem is that it’s toxic to aquatic animals and plant life – especially frogs. This becomes an issue as soon as the weather warms up and the snow and ice begin to melt. According to a New York Times piece, sodium chloride runoff is particularly taxing for Chicago’s frogs, fish…

Canadian ‘climate spoof’ websites shut down

' src='http://gf1.statico.be/wp-content/themes/greenfudge/thumbnails/4005.jpg' alt='canadian-climate-spoof-websites-shut-down' class='art-teaser' width='95' height='95' />

In an event that touches on issues surrounding freedom of speech, the boundaries between parody and the deliberate misleading of the public – as well as legitimate environmental activism, the Canadian government succeeded in shutting down two websites that lampooned the country’s climate policy. The news website commondreams.org reports: The websites that Canada shut down were part of an elaborate “identity correction” carried out by anonymous Canadian activists, the Climate Debt Agents of Action Aid, and The Yes Men. They used press releases and fake websites to announce that Canada would adopt science-based emission targets – reducing emissions by 40%…

The Mother of all Climate Change Protests

the-mother-of-all-climate-change-protests

Are you a mom (or know one)? Do you want to do something about Climate Change? Then check out what Moms Against Climate Change has been up to lately. The latest effort of this Canadian based campaign poses the question: “What would our kids do if they knew what was at stake?” Along with this, they have created a rather touching video of children holding an environmental protest vs. a police riot squad. They are also asking concerned parents to upload photos of their kids, in an attempt to remind Canada’s Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, who exactly he is representing…

‘O No, Canada!’ – Alberta’s Oil Sands

canada-alberta-oil-sands

And we thought you were so Green… apparently, not so much. The Alberta Oil Sands or “Tar Sands” are the world’s largest deposits of bitumen, a heavy, black form of crude oil, which can be extracted via surface mining. Thanks to 2003-2007’s record high oil prices, the sands became more commercially viable than ever. Northeastern Alberta is home to 140,000 square kilometers of oil sands, an area larger than England. Oil sand extraction is widely considered to be of more harm to the environment than that of conventional crude oil. Despite huge profits and job creation, the cost to Alberta’s…
