Despite its enormous physical area of 160,000 miles (414,000 square km) California still has 6 times the population density of its northern neighbor, Oregon. The European Food Safety Authority rejected a ban on plastic baby bottles containing the chemical (BPA) on the grounds of insufficient proof that the amount of BPA in baby bottles poses any significant danger. Studies have linked BPA to breast cancer, heart disease and reproductive disorders, and it has been shown to affect the immune and nervous systems. It is a proven endocrine inhibitor, meaning that it can interfere with hormones. We’ve all heard that BPA is bad for us, that we shouldn’t use any product—especially plastic bottles—that may contain BPA, and that we definitely shouldn’t expose infants or toddlers to BPA products, either. The idea of bottled water started as a crazy idea. Then it became the latest craze. Now it seems to be driving little girls crazy; literally. Water bottles contain an organic compound called Bisphenol A, or BPA for short. A recent study published by Environmental Health Perspectives found that little girls who have heavy exposure to the BPA compound develop an increase in aggression and hyperactivity. The scary thing is most of the exposure was through prenatal transmission. The study took samples from 249 mothers-to-be—and found that all of them had significant amounts of BPA in their urine.
