Radioactive tuna from Japan found off California coast

radioactive-tuna-from-japan-found-off-california-coast

Pacific bluefin tuna have been clocked swimming at speeds of 48km/h (30mph). This might help explain why bluefin carrying low levels of radiation believed to be from Fukushima were found off the coast of California so soon after the nuclear disaster in Japan. Though the reports are only surfacing now, 15 radioactive tuna were caught off of San Diego in August 2011, only around 4 months after the majority of radiation was released into the waters around Fukushima. The elevated levels of cesium-134 and cesium-137 found in the tuna are considered safe and are well below the Japanese and US…

Global Sushi

global-sushi

The global boom in sushi and overfishing have gone hand in hand for the last two decades. The tuna auctions, especially the Tsukiji in Tokyo, are a kind of Wall Street. There, each day,  2,000 tonnes of fish are sold, of which fifty of bluefin tuna are auctioned and sold at the price of gold. 80% of tuna caught and consumed in the world goes through Japan. Providing fresh seafood to industrialized countries has become a greedy business. Between 1995 and 2005, ten Mediterranean countries began to exploit their waters and soon after were joined by Japanese, Korean, Russian and South…

Survival of bluefin tuna in the hands of activists

Sea Shepherd recently freed 800 threatened bluefin tuna from the nets of fishing vessels operating in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Libya. The crew of the Steve Irwin vessel threw rotten butter onto the crew of a Maltese ship after being rammed; then proceeded to examine the contents of their underwater cages. The Sea Shepherd activists then released the overstocked catch, which contained many juvenile tuna. It is the opinion of Sea Shepherd that political efforts have failed and it is private citizens who must act to save the bluefin. Steve Irwin crew member Wietse van der Werf…

Study links overfishing of bluefin to EU subsidies

study-links-overfishing-of-bluefin-to-eu-subsidies

While Japan has been getting almost all the blame for decimating the Earth’s bluefin tuna stocks, the European Union has been quietly facilitating – and even funding – the overfishing of exhausted fish populations such as bluefin and cod. So says research by Poseidon Aquatic Resource Management consultancy and Pew Environment Group, who analyzed data from the EU’s ‘Financial Instrument for Fisheries Guidance’ (FIFG). The groups found that only 17% of subsidies went towards reducing overfishing and environmental protection, while 29% went to what the study terms ‘negative measures’, such as building more powerful fishing vessels. EU countries Spain, Portugal…

China’s growing taste for sushi could ‘wipe out’ bluefin tuna

chinas-growing-taste-for-sushi-could-wipe-out-bluefin-tuna

On Thursday in Qatar, the UN Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) voted not to implement a ban on the international trade of bluefin tuna. The Associated Press reported that the rejection of the ban was seen as good news by Japanese fish dealers, who were worried that it might put bluefin out of many consumers’ price range. Atlantic bluefin tuna stocks have fallen by 60 percent from 1997 to 2007, and environmentalists argue that a trading ban imposed by the 175-nation Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, or CITES, would protect the fish. –AP Currently 80%…

Ban on bluefin tuna fails at endangered species convention

ban-on-bluefin-tuna-fails-at-endangered-species-convention

The threatened bluefin tuna will not be granted protected status. Japan and Canada opposed a ban on international trade on bluefin for economic reasons and received support from many developing nations. The Guardian reports that the vote at the UN Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) in Qatar tallied 172 member nations against the ban, with 43 in favor and 14 abstentions. The proposed trade ban was introduced by Monaco and had the support of the United States, Norway and Kenya. The European Union requested the implementation of any ban to be delayed until May 2011. It is…

The 12 day CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) meetings begin on Saturday in the city of Doha, capital of the Arab emirate of Qatar. The talks will attempt to hammer out transnational policies concerning the management and protection of animal and plant species that are threatened with endangerment or extinction due to international commerce. From the CITES website: Annually, international wildlife trade is estimated to be worth billions of dollars and to include hundreds of millions of plant and animal specimens. The trade is diverse, ranging from live animals and plants…

Japan may ignore bluefin tuna ban, despite EU support

japan-may-ignore-bluefin-tuna-ban-despite-eu-support

Last week the European Commission backed a ban on the international trade of bluefin tuna due to overfishing and a critical decline in global fish stocks. The EU will look for support from its 27 member states. According to a report from the Voice of America, key European players Italy and France have already voiced support for the ban, but European fishermen are opposed. Japan – the major consumer of bluefin tuna – said it would not recognize a ban. A spokesperson for the WWF was quoted by the VOA: “We are seeing a historic decline in the order of…

Eco Solutions – more on conservation, eco warriors and green tech

eco-solutions-more-on-conservation-eco-warriors-and-green-tech

Since it’s the weekend, why not sit back, put your feet up and watch an environmentally themed video report? This month’s Eco Solutions from CNN starts with a recap of an earlier report on Japan’s efforts to develop new ways for farming the endangered and highly valued bluefin tuna. It’s a classic example of supply and demand vs. practical conservation and environmentalism. Feel free to juxtapose the situation in Japan against the bluefin’s plight in Europe, as described by maritime archeologist Frank Pope in an editorial for the London Times entitled ‘Bluefin tuna has been fished to the brink of…

Tuna farming in Japan raises bluefin population, but does not solve overfishing problem

Kinki University in Japan has developed a way to farm prized bluefin tuna, but it is far from eco-friendly according to Greenpeace. The WWF predicts Mediterranean bluefin will be wiped out by 2012 because of overfishing to sate the appetite of gourmet diners. –CNN Read the CNN article on bluefin tuna ranching and check out the embedded video report. The overfishing of tuna causes environmental and economic problems around the world

the-overfishing-of-tuna-causes-environmental-and-economic-problems-around-the-world

In the oceans around the world tuna stocks are disappearing due to massive overfishing, causing imbalances in ecosystems and a loss of livelihood for many who depend on their healthy stocks. General Santos City in the southern Philippines is one place where plummeting tuna populations spell economic hardship for many of residents. Much of the large yellowtail tuna caught off of General Santos is shipped for consumption in Japan, another place feeling the economic strain of tuna depletion. Japan also consumes 80% of the 60,000 tons of bluefin tuna caught annually around the world. And bluefin can be expensive. A…
