Since the human species has more or less successfully extricated itself from the food chain, death just isn’t eco-friendly anymore. The old ‘food for worms’ adage is no longer apt, since worms apparently don’t really fancy formaldehyde. Humans don’t like it in their drinking water either, oddly enough. It seems that these days dying green can be even harder than living green. The modern funeral involves deforestation (in the form of expensive hardwood coffins), chemical pollution of groundwater and both toxic and greenhouse gas emissions from cremation. According to an article in The Economist, an Australian study found that cremation…

I’d choose paper bags for my groceries, but since plastic bags are offered for free in shops and said to be not that bad for the environment, it’s hard to resist them. What is more eco-friendly: plastic or paper shopping bags? A: Neither. We have been conditioned to believe that paper bags are eco-friendly. Paper is made from trees, which are logged by clear-cutting methods. When the collected trees are dry, they are cooked into a pulp for many hours in a chemical mixture. The pulp is then washed and bleached; both stages require thousands of gallons of clean water….

There is something that we use everyday. We use it to see. We use it to work. Some even use it to keep the darkness at bay. What I am talking about is light and that is what the designs in this article are all about. 97% Soap Lamp This ingenious design was created by D-Vision. What makes it so ingenious? Well, as the name says, the lamp is made almost entirely out of soap. During the molding process of the soap, a LED light is placed inside the core of the lamp. This combination of glycerin soap and an…

Recycling is a big part of our everyday lives. The recycling trucks here only collect aluminum and glass. However, downtown there is a recycling site where we take our newspapers, cardboard and plastics. There is the exception of plastic bags, which are not accepted at the recycling site (though people will throw them into the plastic bin all the same). As far as the bags go, we horde them until we have a good amount and then take them to a local grocery store, where they are collected for reuse. Plastic seems to be a very tedious product for a…

Ladies, have you ever wanted to really make an eco-statement with your clothes? Sure, there are fashion products now made out of recyclables or earth friendly materials, but how extreme are you willing to go for your planet? Would you consider wearing Living Shoes? Living Shoes are the latest thing designed by Tuscany-based artist Carmel Walsh. With the use of a variety of plants, these shoes are able to biodegrade once their lives come to a bittersweet end. She was not alone in the making of this product, however. With the help of local farmers and wood restorer Daniele Nencioni,…

“Yes, corn-based packaging is better than petroleum-based packaging for absolutely necessary plastics that aren’t already successfully recycled, and for packaging that cannot be made of paper,” he says. “But it’s not as good as asking, ‘Why are we using so many containers?’ My worry is that PLA legitimizes single-serving, over-packaged products.” –Martin Bourque, executive director of the Berkeley Ecology Center (smithsonianmag.com) Bioplastics are substances and products that mimic petroleum-based plastic, but are made from plant sources or biomass, such as cornstarch or vegetable oil. Some are biodegradable while others are not. But are bioplastics a good alternative to traditional plastics?…

A new environmental trend in North American establishments seeks to do away with trash all together. The concept is called ‘zero waste’ and it’s catching on in schools, restaurants, parks and businesses. Though the zero waste concept may sound like an idealistic goal, it signifies just how serious some people and organizations are starting to take environmental concerns, through increased composting, recycling and decreased usage of non recyclable or non biodegradable products. This new standard of ecological awareness and ideology is evidence that American and world habits, standards and concepts are changing in an age where the health and longevity…

Did you know that the typical dog produces 125 kg (274 pounds) of waste each year (source: USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service)? With today’s town policies requiring owners to pick up after their pets that is a lot of plastic waste that takes op to 100 years to decompose. Luckily enough, some companies see economical advantages in providing biodegradable and compostable doggy bags. Some of these bags are even certified to decompose in just a couple of days, leaving practically no trace of your dog’s poop behind. Read the full article here
