Belgium says no nukes, but should it?

belgium-says-no-nukes-but-should-it

Growing anti-nuclear sentiment in Europe has reached another milestone. Following Germany’s move to close all of its nuclear power plants by 2022, Belgium has decided to shut its own starting in 2015 and completing by 2025, according to a Reuters report. Much like the companies that run Germany’s nuclear stations, Belgium’s energy operator, Electrabel, warned of blackouts, environmental pollution and a decrease in energy independence as a result of the imminent shut down of the country’s 7 atomic power plants. From AFP: Already a net importer of electricity, Belgium could become increasingly dependent on its neighbours, increase its carbon footprint…

Start a love train: Belgium’s solar rail tunnel

start-a-love-train-belgium%e2%80%99s-solar-rail-tunnel

When one thinks of Belgium three things immediately spring to mind: alcoholic monks, acne and ethnic strife. Wait, that’s not quite right. What I mean to say is that when one thinks of Belgium three things immediately spring to mind: fine Trappist beers, gourmet chocolates and a thriving multiculturalism. It’s funny how that came out on my first try. I must have momentarily become some kind of stereotyping, Daily Mail-reading, grumpy old cynic. Anyway, one thing that this boring little non-country, excuse me, this fascinating microcosm of Western Europe can add to its wall of fame is that it is now…

Maplecroft study puts Belgium and The Netherlands in top 10 of worst CO2 polluters

maplecroft-study-puts-belgium-and-the-netherlands-in-top-10-of-worst-co2-polluters

Maplecroft released a new CO2 Emissions chart from Energy Use Index (CEEI) last week, rating 183 countries on their CO2 emissions from energy use. In the top 10 The Netherlands win the 5th position with Belgium closing the gap in the 9th spot. Top polluters include the United Arab Emirates, Australia, the U.S., Canada and Saudi Arabia. The Index is calculated by evaluating a country’s annual carbon emissions from energy use and per capita. The historical and cumulative CO2 emissions from 1900 to 2006 are then added to the equation to provide a complete picture of a country’s CO2 pollution…

Breaking: Flooding in Belgium claims first victims

breaking-flooding-in-belgium-claims-first-victims

Last night, floods in Belgium claimed their first two victims. A woman, who got stuck in her car due to high water levels on the street, was unable to escape on time and drowned. A man, who was walking home late last night, was surprised and dragged away by the strong water current. His lifeless body was found close to his home. It’s been raining in Belgium for a week now. And as torrential rain continues to fall over parts of the country, the lower parts see floodwaters rising by the hour. The past couple of days, some areas saw…

Nobody Here but Us Chickens!

nobody-here-but-us-chickens

Household waste can pile up rather quickly, without us even realizing it. An orange peel here, an old newspaper there, and before you know it you’ll have quite a lot of waste to deal with. Some people may throw things onto compost piles; others are more inclined to simply throw all that waste into the trash. To teach citizens about household waste management, the Belgian city of Mouscron has come up with a most unique campaign. They intend to give away chickens. Yes, chickens. Apparently, these flightless birds are great composters—as long as you can properly take care of them….

On November 14th, 2009 Big Blue – first CO2-neutral knowledge center of Belgium – opened its doors. The Van Marcke Group invested no less than 1.250.000 € in this industrial renovation. The focus of the renovation was to deal with energy and energy consumption in the most conscious possible way. By following this approach, the Van Marcke Group succeeded in fully renovating and refurnishing but especially in creating a CO2-neutral building! On November 27, 2009, thanks to Brussels Girl Geek Dinner, I was given the opportunity to visit the building during an information session. What I remember most about Big…
