Study: Car exhaust turns good cholesterol into bad

study-car-exhaust-turns-good-cholesterol-into-bad

Research published by the American Heart Association shows that breathing in automobile emissions reverses the beneficial qualities of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, the so-called “good cholesterol”. Normally, HDL cholesterol removes LDL or “bad cholesterol” from the blood stream, decreasing the risk of heart disease. Therefore, high levels of HDL are beneficial, while low levels are risky. Yet breathing vehicular emissions damages HDL cholesterol, making it actually contribute to clogging arteries instead of preventing them. From the UCLA Newsroom: In addition to changing HDL from “good” to “bad,” the inhalation of emissions activates other components of oxidation, the early cell and…

Eco-friendly alternatives to Air Purifiers

eco-friendly-alternatives-to-air-purifiers

Before understanding why eco-friendly alternatives to air purifiers are needed, you should know a thing or two about air purifiers and indoor air pollution. Air purifiers are used to rid the indoor air of pollutants. You will be surprised to learn that indoor air is heavily polluted by a variety of sources – chemicals used in furniture, fumes from cooking fuel, outdoor air pollutants, tobacco smoke, asbestos coated insulation, pesticides and more. The pollutants in the indoor air keep accumulating leading to health problems over a period of time. Now, to clear the indoor air, people use air purifiers. The…

Q: I’ve heard eating less meat and dairy products could help the environment. How?

q-i%e2%80%99ve-heard-eating-less-meat-and-dairy-products-could-help-the-environment-how

A: The environmental impact of meat and dairy products is a complex problem. The livestock industry is damaging our planet in many ways. It is polluting the air – according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization report, it generates more greenhouse gas emissions, including CO2 (18%) and methane, than the whole world’s transport (13,5 %). It is polluting the water – gigantic containers called “lagoons”, where livestock animals’ manure and urine are stored, may leak or even break under heavy rains and storms. The waste is highly toxic and very often contains lots of antibiotics and dangerous bacteria….

Study Links Air Pollution to Breathing-Related Sleep Disorders

study-links-air-pollution-to-breathing-related-sleep-disorders

Do you or someone you know have breathing problems while sleeping? If so, you may be surprised to learn that a recent study shows a link between air pollution exposure and breathing troubles during sleep. Air pollution is already known to irritate the respiratory system, so, researchers tried to figure out if this irritation has anything to do with sleeping trouble, too. First, they studied data from the Sleep Heart Health Study, which examined links between heart health and sleeping patterns of more than 6,000 people between 1995 and 1998. Then, they compared that data to EPA air pollution data…

hong-kong-air-pollution-is-becoming-increasingly-life-threatening

China keeps placing in the top 20 list for one thing in particular, and it’s not something to be proud of. World Bank places 16 Chinese cities in their top 20 list of the world’s most polluted cities in terms of air quality; and for those that live in Hong Kong the air quality is not likely to change for the better any time soon. How bad is the air pollution in Hong Kong? Well, roadside air pollution levels reached life-threatening status one out of every eight days last year. The numbers were recorded by the Environmental Protection Department and…

Air Pollution and Extreme Temperatures Increase Heart Attack Risk

air-pollution-and-extreme-temperatures-increase-heart-attack-risk

As if the heightened air pollution and strange temperature fluctuations of the world weren’t already big enough problems on their own, it seems another may be a result of too much exposure to them: heart attacks. According to a study conducted by Dr. Krishnan Bhaskaran of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, when temperatures are abnormally hot or cold, or on days when there is excessive air pollution, people are at greater risk of having heart attacks. For example, if there are 10 heart attacks in a city per day, there might be several more that happen on…

Air Pollution May Cause Headaches

air-pollution-may-cause-headaches

Have you ever had a terrible headache for no apparent reason? Believe it or not, it could be from air pollution. Considering the damage air pollution already does to the environment and people’s health, I wouldn’t be surprised. A study conducted in the Santiago Province of Chile found that more people went to the hospital for headache problems when there were higher air pollution readings. The area itself is surrounded by Coastal and Andes mountains and as such, prone to air pollution. More studies and research needs to be completed in different areas, however, to confirm the consistency of these…

Seeing through the smog

seeing-through-the-smog

I went on a quick respite from my busy city life to one of the scenic spots two hours away from Manila. I wanted to catch some fresh air; smell flowers; and be amazed by my incredible rural surroundings. I wasn’t disappointed; I got what I wanted but not without a nagging environmental issue at the back of my head. While I was on my way to one of the scenic spots in the Philippines, Tagaytay, I was dumbfounded that my once clear view of the skies at a very beautiful and sunny morning was tainted by hazy, blackish fog,…
