I have been keeping up to date on the situation via the Guardian’s live news blog, where it was posted that Save the Children has set up a fund for Japan’s earthquake/tsunami victims. You can access Save the Children’s UK earthquake/tsunami site here and the US version here. Yahoo News has also provided…

EU to stop govt. subsidizing of loss-making coal mines

eu-to-stop-govt-subsidizing-of-loss-making-coal-mines

Europe’s loss-making hard coal mines will be forced to close due to a new tightening of regulations regarding government subsidies. Coal mines deemed uncompetitive will have their subsides diverted from production costs to social and environmental aid for their respective areas. This has been the trend for hard coal mines during the last decade, when overall aid fell by more than 50%. From an article in the Financial Times: New European Union rules that come into force from January will only allow government operating aid to be provided to hard coal mines if closure plans are in place. Those plans…

undercover-stint-reveals-japan-is-bribing-nations-to-receive-pro-whaling-support

Thanks to a recent stint pulled by some undercover reporters it would appear that the Japanese whalers are continuing their course aboard a sinking ship (so to speak). According to the Sunday Times, Japan has bribed a number of small nations in attempt to earn their support at the upcoming IWC meeting. Undercover reporters pretended to be representatives of a Swiss billionaire conservationist and approached officials from pro-whaling nations, offering them a special package if they changed their votes. During negotiations, many of the officials revealed they were supporting Japan and admitted the Japanese offered them a variety of “gifts”,…

A tornado that ripped through part of India last week killed at least 131 people and made any attempt of aid a real trying task. Aid and rescue workers had to make their way through uprooted trees and downed power lines blocking roads to provide food and shelter to the hundreds of thousands of victims left homeless by the storm. In West Bengal state alone, at least 250,000 people became homeless, thanks to the cyclone. Srikumar Mukherji, minister for civil defense of West Bengal, stated: “We are facing a crisis in the relief operation. There is a shortage of manpower…
