The South Asian country of Bangladesh is one of the places in the world considered most vulnerable to climate change. It is also one of the poorest nations on Earth. In Bangladesh, reducing CO2 emissions and implementing cap and trade schemes are not the issue. Already used to catastrophic flooding compounded by intense poverty, Bangladeshis are in the business of climate change adaptation. This is climate change ground zero. As Himalayan glaciers melt and heavy rains perennially flood Bangladesh – a hot country of flood planes located on the Ganges River Delta – its people have no choice but to…

In some Asian countries clean water is an increasingly scarce and politically charged resource – and climate change will only make things worse. Pakistan and India, both reliant on the shared waters of Indus River for irrigation and hydroelectric power, face problems including floods, water shortages, chronically high levels of unsafe drinking water as well as conflicts between and within both nations. Unsafe drinking water in urban centers remains a huge problem for Kamal Nath and the Indian Urban Development Ministry. The countries of the Amu Darya basin – Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan – experience similar problems and conflicts…

Two stories from the BBC highlight how very different societies are adapting to climate change – specifically to the threat of flooding and rising water levels. One article explains how a new study conducted by researchers in the United States suggests that reconnecting flood-plains to rivers would decrease chances of future flooding and lessen the potential for flood damage in urban areas. In addition to minimizing flood risks, reconnecting rivers to flood-plains would result in better land use for flood-plains, increased resilience to the effects of climate change and ‘an increase in flood-plain goods and services,’ including the potential for…

Inevitable changes in climate mean the vulnerable must adapt or suffer the worst consequences of climate change. Even climate skeptic Lord Lawson, who is not convinced that human activity is the main cause for climate change, supports aiding poorer, vulnerable countries to prepare for and deal with coming adversities. In a CNN ‘climate change debate’ with Lawson, Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai agreed that poor countries must prepare for the worst and should not expect agreements at COP15 to solve coming problems associated with global warming. ‘Africans will have to work very hard to deal with very harsh climates…
