Eyewitnesses saw 36-year-old Hasan Matar Khamis with a group of friends on the rocks beneath Corinthia Marina Hotel at about 7.30 a. m., police sources said. About 10 minutes later, Mr Kamis was apparently pushed into the water as a joke and the group of four who were with him walked away, the sources said.

The scene was witnessed by tourists staying at the hotel, who immediately informed the hotel staff , asking them to call the police.

Police officers arrived within minutes and found the man’s lifeless body floating face down in the water. Civil Protection Department personnel were called to help carry Mr Kamis’s body ashore.

Mr Kamis, who had been in Malta for the past six years, was registered as living at the Marsa open centre and has no family. He was wearing a blazer, a shirt and a pair of jeans.

As investigations are still in the early stages, the police are not ruling anything at this point, not even foul play, sources said.

The sequence of events is still not yet clear but eyewitnesses noted that t he body language of the other people was not aggressive or threatening towards Mr Kamis, the sources explained.

The police are looking into the possibility that Mr Kamis was thrown in the water as a joke. However, it is not yet clear what led to him being left alone at sea.

No wounds were found on his body, except for a few scratches. Although it is suspected that Mr Kamis drowned, an autopsy is expected to be carried out today to establish the precise cause of death.

Depending on the outcome of the investigations, the victim’s friends could possibly face criminal charges in court.

Magistrate Doreen Clarke is holding an inquiry.

Coral Sea supporters commemorate Threatened Species Day

To commemorate Threatened Species Day on Wednesday 7 September, the Protect our Coral Sea campaign is releasing a supporter’s video – you can listen to their campaign Ambassadors John Williamson, Tim Winton, Jesse Martin, Pat Rafter, Kristy Hinze, Isabel Lucas and Akira Isogawa as well as hear from everyday Australians calling for a highly protected, very large, world-class marine park in Australia’s Coral Sea. The federal government will be deciding the fate of our Coral Sea later this year so right now Australians have a once in a lifetime opportunity to help protect this amazing part of Australia so future generations will be able to experience an oceanic wilderness. John Williamson believes,

“It is easy to forget our natural heritage under the ocean waves. There is more colour among our fish and coral than even the amazing birdlife that we treasure. Let’s do something our grandchildren will be thankful for and preserve the Coral Sea. I am 100% behind it”- John Williamson AM

Threatened Species Day is held each year to commemorate the death of the last Tasmanian Tiger at Hobart zoo in 1936, and to highlight the many other species in Australia who face a similar fate if not properly protected.

Over 340 bird and animal species in Australia’s Coral Sea are included on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. Five of the eight species of tuna are in the threatened or Near Threatened categories. These include some found in the Coral Sea; Bigeye tuna, Vulnerable; Yellowfin, Near Threatened, Albacore tuna, Near Threatened. The Striped marlin is also Near Threatened.

The Coral Sea is a tropical marine jewel which lies east of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. It’s one of the last places on Earth where large marine animals can still be found in great numbers.

Yet less than 1% of this Serengeti of the Seas is protected.
