Thanks for your comment. I agree that processed fruit juice tends to be more expensive (or about the same) as soda in many countries, but I don't believe this is necessarily so. The juice Chavez is promoting is made by the state in a tropical country. Grape juice is also quite inexpensive I think (white grape juice is often used as a sweetener).

The reason this story struck a chord with me is that when I was visiting Mexico in the 90s I noticed that you could by fresh orange and carrot juice in a huge bag on the street for around 0.30 usd, while a can of Coke was at least twice that. Yet people everywhere were drinking Coke. Another thing I noticed is that in Brazil over the past years, Cocacola has bought up all local firms that make packaged juice, and everything in the supermarkets was sweetened juice drinks, with maybe 50% juice and NOT cheap. I couldn't believe this was the case in a tropical country full of fruit.

If people drank as much fruit juice as they did soda... the country would have to import MORE fruit because it doesn't have enough to support all their citizens. Not to mention COLA is cheap compared to fruit juice. FOR 1 DOLLAR i can buy a 2 liter. but juice costs 2.49 for a half of liter. In a country of poor people... its an uphill battle. unless they can produce local juice cheaper than cola.
