A lot of people have heard about the importance of switching out Thomas Edison’s old incandescent light bulbs for energy saving bulbs such as LED or CFL. The same goes for replacing your old fossil fuel based car with one that runs on electricity. Energy efficiency and energy conservation is becoming increasingly important and people are starting to realize that everyone can contribute. In this article we are taking a closer look at something that takes up a few hours of your time, but potentially have a significant impact on saving the environment – not to mention your energy bill!…

You have to be nuts not to be eating nuts (pun intended)! Nuts are super-nutritious for you, easy to carry around, and delicious. With so many varieties of them, it’s hard to tell which ones are the cream-of-the-crop when it comes to nutritional punch. We did the research, and we picked out the 5 “core” nuts that you should be eating daily to give you that daily punch you need for maximum energy at minimum cost. Raw Almonds Want to have “wolverine” like energy? Take about 40 raw almonds a day. Avoid the salted kind. Brazil Nuts Brazil nuts cover…

Species: Southern bluefin tuna (Thunnus maccoyii) Status: Critically Endangered (CR) Interesting fact: The southern bluefin tuna is one of the largest bony fish in the world, growing up to 4.3 metres long! The southern bluefin tuna is an incredibly streamlined and powerful fish capable of reaching speeds of up to 70 km per hour through the water. Swimming together in shoals, the southern bluefin tuna migrates vast distances from the spawning grounds in the Indian Ocean to the feeding grounds in colder, southern waters. During the spawning period, a mature female will produce several million eggs. Southern bluefin tuna are opportunistic…

Soon Wales will receive wind energy generated off the coast of Ireland via high voltage cables spanning the bottom of the Irish Sea. There is already a link between the UK and the Netherlands via the BritNed cable and by 2019 a 900km interconnector between Norway and the UK should be completed, supplying energy from a clever pump storage system powered by wind turbines. Another connector between the UK and France is already in existence, with two more proposed, although one involves nuclear power. The most interesting and by far longest cable proposed would link the UK power grid with…

Pets provide so much in our daily lives, from companionship and unconditional love, to entertainment while you’re playing with them and their favourite toys. However cats and dogs can carry a pretty large carbon footprint, comparable to owning an SUV (for dogs) or a small town car (for cats). The toys you buy for your pets can add to that carbon footprint as a lot of these playthings are mass produced and aren’t bio-degradable. For sensitive pets these toys can also be the cause of many of the symptoms your pet suffers from. Pet owners are rapidly switching from mass-produced…

Can higher gas prices actually effect consumer behavior? In many European countries, gas prices are double what we are paying in the U.S. These countries are the closest models we have to compare to see if gas prices were high, if we would lower gasoline consumption and alter our automotive selection for smaller more gas efficient vehicles. Due to high taxes, Europeans have been paying much more for gas for a very long time. Europeans do live differently when it comes to purchasing and owning cars. They are more likely to take public transportation and live in urban areas compared…

Baking Soda Make a paste of baking soda and water, then put some directly on the pimple. Leave it on for a few hours, preferably overnight and ideally avoid walking abouts in public. The paste will dry over night, reduce inflammation, and naturally remove pus from the pimple. Ice Just like how you might use ice on a sprained or twisted ankle, bruises, and other injuiries, you can also use ice on pimples. Applying ice for about 15 minutes should help reduce inflammation. Tooth Paste Baking soda and tooth paste work the same way, and are applied on pimples the…

Last month we featured the first innovation challenge from E.ON Innovation. This time around, the question to answer is “What new home energy products or services can you think of that enhance your health and happiness? E.ON Innovation is an online innovation community, focused on encouraging the UK public to come up with the next big energy idea. Together with the new Channel 4 show Home of the Future E.ON is launching a new crowd sourcing project called E.ON Innovation. As an avid believer in social challenges I have been following the E.ON Innovation project very closely, looking out for…

The key to a green future is doing a little at a time, and considering all the options At this point we’re past the stage where energy saving and renewables are talked about as something futuristic and unobtainable or something for sandal wearers and lentil-eaters. Solar panels are appearing on many suburban homes, wind turbines a common site on farms and new commercial buildings and wind-farms, heat pumps and tidal power generators and a smorgasbord of clever new technologies are popping up all over the UK, Europe and beyond. But what, as a normal everyday consumer can you or I…

By Qudimat (EthicalCommunity.com) Between the years 2004 and 2005, the world saw an extra 10,000 metric tons of fair-trade coffee being produced. The UK alone consumes around 150,000 metric tons per year. Since the inception of fair-trade coffee, less farmland was cultivated for illicit drugs, fewer children were put to work, and more kids were sent to college. The benefits of fair-trade are unmistakable. The biggest mindset change for a consumer is to recognize the effects of fair-trade are indeed positive with each purchase that they make. Main Points: Fair-trade coffee raises standards The special fair-trade blends and their respective…

There are two types of drivers: drivers who need a car every day and drivers who just need one for the occasional meeting or trip out of town. The automotive industry is changing, and with it, so are drivers who are now looking to save money on gas and reduce emissions. This is where the idea of car sharing comes in to play. Car sharing is pretty simple, instead of having many drivers who don’t use their car every day, these drivers can now opt not to own a car, but share one with another car owner and have access…

There’s no denying the fact that we live in an increasingly connected world. Finding old friends through Facebook has never been easier. Video chatting with friends or family across the world requires nothing more than a web cam and an internet connection. You’d be hard pressed to find something that we use in our daily lives that hasn’t been turned digital. Now, your commute is turning digital as well. The New Cities Foundation (NCF), a non-profit based in Paris focused on creating a “more socially, economically and environmentally sustainable urban future,” has taken on the task of rethinking the way Silicon…

Wasteful battery chargers for smartphones, tablet computers, laptops, etc., will be subject to new, stricter rules in the US state of California. ‘Vampire’ battery chargers can waste up to 60% of the energy they take from electrical outlets. California is the first US state to confront this problem, with the California Energy Commission voting unanimously to improve efficiency standards, which will cover some 170 million chargers. The manufacturers of consumer appliances of course strongly objected to the new regulations, despite projections that the improved energy standards would save $306 million per year on commercial and residential electricity bills. From the…

Most of us tend to choose organic, if the price differential isn’t too much ! But recently I’m beginning to wonder, what is more important, sustainability or organic certification ? Leaving aside the debate as to the provenance of some approved organic treatments, copper sulphate for example, is the lack of an ‘organic’ tag putting us off sensible, sustainable practices ? For example, we start all of our plants in a compost blend of wormcast and coir – full of good stuff and it’s nice and light. We first experimented with this compost ( and then became totally hooked) when…

In America, a street built for pedestrians is still a growing idea. However, in Europe this idea is a normal part of life. Pedestrian streets have been a part of European culture for hundreds, even thousands of years, despite changes in how people transport themselves. Cars, trains and buses have been integrated tactfully in many European cities while still preserving these pedestrian corridors. Also known as a car-free zone, the largest pedestrian street in Europe is located in Copenhagen, called Strøget. According to one Canadian news source, this street boasts a little over one mile of historic buildings with fine shops, eateries and…

If you’re interested in staving off climate change without trying too hard, painting your roof white seems like a complete no-brainer. It’s far cheaper than trading in your SUV for a Prius, and it turns the laws of physics to best advantage. Dark roofs absorb sunlight that heats up your house, office tower, or apartment building. That means you’re bound to crank up the energy-intensive air conditioner to keep pace in the summer months — and since electricity in the U.S. comes largely from fossil fuels, the net result is more heat-trapping greenhouse gas emissions, and more global warming. But…

Last Thanksgiving I received a round-trip off of Craiglist from Portland to Seattle for just $25. Yup, that’s right, I traveled to and from Seattle for $10 less than a one-way ticket would have been through Greyhound. Especially now that the Holiday Season has finally “arrived” and travel plans are being arranged, there is no better time to share your first ride. More and more Craigslist rideshares are safe and easy to come by. And while hitch-hiking has gone to the wayside over the last several decades, a new and evolved form let’s call “neo-hitchhiking” has emerged in ridesharing. Once again Americans that…
