Solar airplane flies from Switzerland to Morocco

solar-airplane-flies-from-switzerland-to-morocco

In preparation for its first round-the-world flight, the sun-powered Solar Impulse aircraft has completed the first leg of its flight across the Mediterranean by landing safely in Madrid this morning. The experimental solar airplane was making the first leg of its journey from Payerne, Switzerland to Rabat, Morocco. Though the plane has a wingspan comparable to a large jet, it only weighs as much as a mid-sized car.   Lone pilot Andre Borschberg is quoted by AFP: The flight went very well and thanks to the team of meteorologists, everything went according to the plan: it was extraordinary. It was…

The Bad News Continues to Flow About Antarctica’s Ice

the-bad-news-continues-to-flow-about-antarcticas-ice

By Michael D. Lemonick It’s just two weeks since a paper in Nature flagged an ominous thinning of ice shelves along parts of the Antarctic coast lying due south of the Pacific Ocean. The ice appears to be melting from below, as changing ocean currents are bringing relatively warm water to bathe the shelves’ undersides — and as the ice shelves lose mass, they also lose their ability to slow land-based ice in its slide toward the sea. Now there’s something new to worry about. A pair of brand-new studies published today, one in Nature and one in its sister…

Did you see the ‘supermoon’?

did-you-see-the-supermoon

Around the globe people have been marveling at the appearance of a perigree moon, also known as a supermoon. The supermoon phenomenon occurs when a full Moon coincides with the closest distance the Moon comes to the Earth during its orbit. During this phenomenon the Moon can appear 14% larger and 30% brighter than normal. Saturday night photographers around the world captured striking images of the supermoon, many with the moon behind iconic backdrops, such as the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and the Temple of Poseidon in Athens, Greece. From the Guardian: Amateur photographers were…

The Five Greatest Nuts of All Time

the-five-greatest-nuts-of-all-time

You have to be nuts not to be eating nuts (pun intended)! Nuts are super-nutritious for you, easy to carry around, and delicious. With so many varieties of them, it’s hard to tell which ones are the cream-of-the-crop when it comes to nutritional punch. We did the research, and we picked out the 5 “core” nuts that you should be eating daily to give you that daily punch you need for maximum energy at minimum cost. Raw Almonds Want to have “wolverine” like energy? Take about 40 raw almonds a day. Avoid the salted kind. Brazil Nuts Brazil nuts cover…

Take a Ride Into Space With NASA’s Rubber Chicken

take-a-ride-into-space-with-nasas-rubber-chicken

By Michael D. Lemonick I’ve never told anyone this before, but when I was a kid, I always wanted a rubber chicken. Many of the comedic heroes of my childhood got to play with them — the Three Stooges, for example, and Soupy Sales (I’m dating myself and revealing my lowbrow side all at once here). It’s not like they were all that hard to find, even before the Internet. I also had a slightly more elevated set of interests, including an endless fascination with the space program. I was too young to be aware of Sputnik, but I watched…

Wind farms warm soil at night by 0.72, so what?

wind-farms-warm-soil-at-night-by-0-72-so-what

I read the news today, oh boy. Wind farms are causing global warming? No, but maybe a bit of local warming. A new study of wind turbines in Texas shows that rotating blades force warm air downwards at night, causing ground temperatures to rise by up to 0.72C (1.3F). And so the headlines read that wind farms warm the night, or as Reuters states ‘Wind Farms Might Have Warming Effect’. But they also cool ground temperatures during the day according to previous research. Isn’t this piece of information equally significant? The Guardian doesn’t include it in their article, while Discovery…

What the Hail is going on?

what-the-hail-is-going-on

By Andrew Freedman Severe thunderstorm season is upon us, with the array of threats it brings, from tornadoes to flash flooding. On Tuesday, tornadoes grabbed most of the headlines, as several strong tornadoes struck the Dallas-Ft. Worth metro area, tossing tracker trailer trucks into the air, and damaging dozens of homes. But the large hail the same supercell thunderstorms dropped caused major impacts as well, largely because they fell on top of one of the world’s busiest airports. A passenger aboard a flight preparing to depart DFW International Airport when the storm hit described the sounds of the hail hitting…

European supergrid could power UK with foreign green energy

european-supergrid-could-power-uk-with-foreign-green-energy

Soon Wales will receive wind energy generated off the coast of Ireland via high voltage cables spanning the bottom of the Irish Sea. There is already a link between the UK and the Netherlands via the BritNed cable and by 2019 a 900km interconnector between Norway and the UK should be completed, supplying energy from a clever pump storage system powered by wind turbines. Another connector between the UK and France is already in existence, with two more proposed, although one involves nuclear power. The most interesting and by far longest cable proposed would link the UK power grid with…

Climate change: How to cope with salty soil

climate-change-how-to-cope-with-salty-soil

In some coastal areas climate change means a rise in sea levels, leading to an increase in water salinity, which in turn means a high salt content in soil. Increasing salinity in fresh water and soil poses problems for agriculture and fish farming. This is a particularly tricky aspect of climate change adaptation, but coastal communities as well as scientists are finding ways to cope. Hardy varieties of rice, wheat and vegetables are one way, as is shifting from freshwater fish farming to raising saltwater species such as crabs. In Sri Lanka, rice farmers, together with the United Nations Development…

Now You Sea It, Now You Don’t: Watch Arctic Sea Ice Melt

now-you-sea-it-now-you-dont-watch-arctic-sea-ice-melt

One of the most striking changes that has taken place in the Arctic since the start of satellite monitoring in 1979 is the rapid decline of the perennial sea ice cover. This ice is the sea ice that survives the summer melt season, and is typically the thickest part of the sea ice cover, sometimes spanning several years. Sea ice extent has declined as the globe has warmed, but the ice cover has thinned as well. Thinner sea ice melts more easily, and as multiyear sea ice is lost, Arctic sea ice has declined more rapidly. This NASA visualization shows…

Is Europe a glimpse of the Future?

is-europe-a-glimpse-of-the-future

Can higher gas prices actually effect consumer behavior? In many European countries, gas prices are double what we are paying in the U.S.  These countries are the closest models we have to compare to see if gas prices were high, if we would lower gasoline consumption and alter our automotive selection for smaller more gas efficient vehicles. Due to high taxes, Europeans have been paying much more for gas for a very long time. Europeans do live differently when it comes to purchasing and owning cars.  They are more likely to take public transportation and live in urban areas compared…

5 Eco Hacks for getting rid of pimples

5-eco-hacks-for-getting-rid-of-pimples

Baking Soda Make a paste of baking soda and water, then put some directly on the pimple. Leave it on for a few hours, preferably overnight and ideally avoid walking abouts in public. The paste will dry over night, reduce inflammation, and naturally remove pus from the pimple. Ice  Just like how you might use ice on a sprained or twisted ankle, bruises, and other injuiries, you can also use ice on pimples. Applying ice for about 15 minutes should help reduce inflammation. Tooth Paste Baking soda and tooth paste work the same way, and are applied on pimples the…

Perpetual Ocean: High-Def View of Surface Currents

perpetual-ocean-high-def-view-of-surface-currents

Video Credit: NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center Scientific Visualization Studio A nifty animation from NASA illustrating the paths of global ocean surface currents from June 2005 through December 2007. Surface currents circulate water of varying temperature around the globe and thus play a significant role in weather and climate patterns. Note the Gulf Stream along the western edge of the Atlantic Ocean. This powerful current transfers warm water away from the equator and up into the North Atlantic Ocean, in turn warming the climate along the eastern coast of North America and the western coast of Europe. It is believed that…

Endangered Species of the Week: California condor

endangered-species-of-the-week-california-condor

Species: California condor (Gymnogyps californianus) Status: Critically Endangered (CR) Interesting Fact: The California condor urinates on its own legs to keep cool! The California condor is a member of the New World vulture family, and has an impressive wingspan of just less than three metres. Native to North America, the California condor soars over large distances on its immense wings, using its vision to spot carrion on which to feed. Its large size means it dominates other scavengers at a carcass, except the golden eagle which, while smaller, has an impressive set of talons. The California condor mates for life,…

Fair Trade Coffee Is sweeter than Love

fair-trade-coffee-is-sweeter-than-love

By Qudimat (EthicalCommunity.com) Between the years 2004 and 2005, the world saw an extra 10,000 metric tons of fair-trade coffee being produced. The UK alone consumes around 150,000 metric tons per year. Since the inception of fair-trade coffee, less farmland was cultivated for illicit drugs, fewer children were put to work, and more kids were sent to college. The benefits of fair-trade are unmistakable. The biggest mindset change for a consumer is to recognize the effects of fair-trade are indeed positive with each purchase that they make. Main Points: Fair-trade coffee raises standards The special fair-trade blends and their respective…

If We’re Altering Rain, Hail, Any Doubts Left on Climate?

if-were-altering-rain-hail-any-doubts-left-on-climate

By Andrew Freedman COMMENTARY One of the biggest hurdles to overcome when communicating climate science is the resistance many have to accepting the notion that human activities are capable of altering the earth’s climate system. After all, the planet is a pretty big place, and the climate was doing its thing long before humans arrived. To some, the abundant scientific evidence showing that manmade emissions of global warming gases, such as carbon dioxide, are likely the key driver behind recent global warming seems, well, kind of arrogant. To these folks, I say check out a recent study that had nothing…
