Sri Lankan authorities have agreed to the elimination of 3 million stray dogs. The government has decided to cancel the decision prohibiting the capture and killing their dogs – said Maithripala Sirisena, Minister of Health of Sri Lanka. In this country, two thousand people are annually hospitalised because of bites inflicted by strays searching for food. According to authorities, the number of wandering dogs already exceeded 3 million, and has become a serious problem for public health. The killing of stray dogs ban came into legislation in 2006 under pressure from animal protection organisations that forced a sterilisation programme. This, however,…

Philippine President Benigno Aquino declared a state of emergency after a tropical typhoon Washi (Sendong) battered the country and reportedly claimed the lives of nearly 1,000 people. Regions most affected by the tropical storm were areas of the cities Cagayan de Oro and Iligan on Mindanao island. In a mere few hours the raging elements led to local rivers overflowing their banks and flash floods to cause water saturated soil to slip down slopes destroying everything in their path. Due to the almost zero chance of finding anyone still alive, dozens of people who previously were considered missing are now…

Tanzanian villagers were promised much-needed infrastructure, water security, money, education and health benefits from UK Biofuel firm Sun Biofuels in return for their land. 1,000 inhabitants of Kisarawe villages in Tanzania gave up thousands of hectares of land in order that Sun Biofuels could grow jatropha, a biofuel plant. But Sun Biofuels did not follow through. The villagers have instead suffered health and safety violations, poor salaries, followed by redundancy and no improvements in infrastructure or water security. In fact, things have gotten much worse. From a press release by Greenstream TV: On top of all these unfulfilled pledges, the…

Last night on CNN I watched a series of programs on human trafficking, a subject I’ve studied and posted about before. Simply put, human trafficking is slavery. Most slaves are children and women who are poor and vulnerable, but the victims of human trafficking can be anyone, regardless of class, location, age, gender or ethnicity. The illegal trade of human beings is a widespread, multibillion-dollar industry that most people know nothing or next to nothing about. Yet there are now more slaves than at any time in the history of the world. Human trafficking has insidiously inserted itself into the…

I love watching celebrities curse. It’s such a guilty pleasure. Having grown up in the 80s in the USA – without HBO or Showtime – upon moving to the UK I reveled in the obscenities thrown around on British television with self-indulgent abandon. And I still do. That’s right – give me an f-, s- or even dreaded c-word over a ‘gosh-darn’ any day. If you don’t like it, f-you. Seriously though, as puerile as it sounds, Jessica Alba and Bono swearing in a YouTube video while the Stooges’ ‘Now I Wanna Be Your Dog’ blasts in the background is…

Thanks to generous donations and support from all over the world, the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has been able to raise over $735,000 (about € 515.000) to save the flagship Steve Irwin—less than two weeks after the launch of their SOS! – Save Our Ship fundraising campaign! On July 15th, the Steve Irwin was detained in the Scottish Shetland Islands pending the Sea Shepherd’s ability to fund a bond estimated to be in the amount of $1,411,692.87 (about €990.000). The detainment was ordered by British courts due to a civil lawsuit brought against the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society by Maltese…

Last week the United Nations declared a famine in two southern areas of Somalia. According to aid workers 800,000 children could die due to the current hunger. Somalia’s Foreign minister warned that 3.5m are at risk of death by starvation. All in all, around 10m people are in peril. Islamist Militants have expelled workers from the UN’s World Food Program workers where possible. Nonetheless, the WFP is in the process of delivering 10 tons of food to the areas worst stricken by the drought and famine. From the BBC: Somalia is thought to be worst-hit by the crisis, but Ethiopia,…

I know we tend harp on about plastic waste and all the shocking problems it’s causing, what with those giant swirls of plastic in both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. But the consequences of our consumption-driven, disposable product-filled lifestyle are catastrophic in the long run, even if they are slightly more convenient in the short term. Is the problem at the level of government policy – for example, should disposable containers be banned? Or do solutions lie at the level of industry – can we rely on philanthropic tycoons to stop cutting down forests for paper coffee cups and encourage…

We know that people in the UK love their animals. The RSPCA, Battersea Dogs Home, among others, are seminal animal welfare organizations with long histories. Sure, there are still Beefeaters at the Tower of London, but even the guards at Buckingham Palace are set to switch from bearskins to synthetic hats designed by Stella McCartney. Currently only about 20 wild animals perform in UK circuses, but the British public supports a ban, across political persuasions: A ban was backed by supporters of all three main political parties – Conservatives by 70 per cent, Labour by 76 per cent and…

A truck containing several hundred dogs was stopped by activists on a road in Beijing on Friday. A supportive crowd of some 200 people gathered and the driver was eventually paid off to give up his canine cargo, many of whom were in poor health. Though the eating of dogs is not uncommon in some Chinese provinces, these dogs were not livestock. They had apparently been stolen from their owners – some still had collars to prove it, though the driver claimed they had been purchased. The interception of the dogs was the latest bold action by pet-lovers in China,…

There have been many victims of this month’s earthquake and resultant tsunami disaster in northern Japan. The loss of human life, livelihood and property is immense and the suffering continues. Less attention has been given to the countless animals – wild, domestic and livestock – who have also suffered and are still in dire need of help. The title of this post has two meanings because there are two categories of help. There are still many animals stranded in or facing terrible and dangerous conditions in the areas affected by the earthquake and tsunami. There are also many who have…

The UK’s Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government’s plan to cut social programs as part of a decision to reduce spending by £95bn (€108bn) over 5 years will start to take effect in one week’s time. From a piece in the Guardian: Their disappearance may not be noticed by anyone with a good income, in secure employment, in sound health, without caring responsibilities – anyone who does not look to the state for support with life’s problems. For the more vulnerable, the decision to close these bodies and cut these jobs will be sharply felt. They will be more acutely obvious beyond…

In addition to Google Person Finder’s 2011 Japan Earthquake service and ShelterBox’s aid program for victims, several other organizations are mobilizing to help those affected by the recent tsunami and earthquake in northern Japan. Japanese authorities have upgraded the quake to a 9.0 on the Richter scale. I have been keeping up to date on the situation via the Guardian’s live news blog, where it was posted that Save the Children has set up a fund for Japan’s earthquake/tsunami victims. You can access Save the Children’s UK earthquake/tsunami site here and the US version here. Yahoo News has also provided…
