Video: French bulldog adopts wild piglets
Posted by Graham_Land in Animals, Videos & Documentaries, Wildlife & Flora, 17 Feb 2012
A French bulldog in Berlin, Germany has stepped up to the plate and adopted 6 wild boar piglets after their mother was killed by a hunter.
The bulldog, named Baby, has previously been a surrogate mother for rabbits, kittens and a raccoon.
The piglets were found alone in a forest. Berlin has ample woodland and is home to an estimated 10,000 wild boar, whose population has made a resurgence in recent years.
From the Guardian:
The piglets were brought into the Lehnitz animal sanctuary outside Berlin on Saturday, three days old and shivering from cold. Baby ran over and snuggled up to them, keeping them warm, even though they were almost her size, said a sanctuary worker, Norbert Damm.

Electric cars: solutions to the ‘refueling’ dilemma?
One of the main ‘problems’ or turn-offs about owning an electric car for many consumers is their range of distance. Most car drivers are used to a single fill-up at the pump lasting several days, and since gas or petrol stations are pretty much everywhere – at least in highly populated, developed areas – refueling standard, fossil fuel-powered cars is generally quick and easy. Electric cars have a reputation for being decidedly less convenient, which is not entirely unjustified, as...
Breaking: Two new oil spills hit the US
Yesterday the United States experienced two more oil spills: One in the Gulf of Mexico, the other in the Kalamazoo River in Michigan. A tug boat, which was pushing a barge, ran into an abandoned well in the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday morning, causing gas and oil to spew 100ft (30m) into the air. The well is located in Barataria Bay, Louisiana, some 65 miles (105km) south of New Orleans. Barataria Bay is an ecologically rich wetlands and fishing area that...
Micronesia attempts to block refitting of Czech coal-fired power plant
In an unprecedented and audacious move to curb global greenhouse gas emissions, the Federated States of Micronesia – a small nation of islands in the western Pacific Ocean – have appealed against the refitting of a coal plant in far off Prunerov, Czech Republic. Prunerov – owned by the utilities conglomerate CEZ – is one of the largest coal-fired power stations in the EU and the largest single source of CO2 emissions in the Czech Republic. According to the Norwegian...
Video: New Zealand takes on problematic methane emissions
One third of greenhouse gasses in New Zealand come from livestock, according to the below report from CNN Eco Solutions. Home to just 4 million people, New Zealand has 38 million sheep 9 million cows, which fuel large export industries in dairy, meat and wool. These animals produce vast amounts of methane, a greenhouse gas 21 times stronger than CO2. Scientists in New Zealand are attempting to produce a vaccine that inhibits the microscopic methanogens that live inside the stomachs of sheep...
Green Apartments to be Built in Malmo, Sweden
Do you live in Sweden? Are you interested in passive living? Do you want a green apartment? If you answered yes to these questions, then it may help you to know that 4 green apartments—with passive house techniques—are being added to the city of Malmö. The project, called Salongen 35, is the winner of a passive house design competition that was held by the builder Höllviksnäs Förvaltnings AB. Designed by Kjellgren Kaminsky, the apartments are expected to be built on the...
Measuring climate change by speed: Temperature velocity
The Guardian reports that a new study measures climate change in terms of speed. The results show that climate change progresses at an average global velocity of a quarter of a mile (or 0.4 km) per year. Species that can tolerate only a narrow range of temperatures will need to move as quickly if they are to survive. Wildlife in lowland tropics, mangroves and desert areas are at greater risk than species in mountainous areas, the study suggests. –Guardian The study – conducted...
Sowing the SEED of Haiti’s Emergency Housing Project
Image Source: SEED It is no big secret by now that Haiti has been devastated by a massive earthquake and a great number of aftershocks. People died, homes were destroyed, and many supplies are needed. There is always the possibility that another earthquake will happen in the future and they can’t keep dealing with rubble and reconstruction projects forever. So, how do you build a home that has a better chance of withstanding an earthquake? With shipping containers, that’s how! The...
The great unknown: Mediterranean comes top 5 in marine biodiversity census
The Census of Marine Life is a 10-year worldwide project conducted by a network of researchers and coordinated in part by the Consortium for Ocean Leadership. The aim of the census – the first global study of its kind – is to ‘explain the diversity, distribution, and abundance of life in the oceans’. From an article in the Telegraph: They hope that by creating the first catalogue of the world's oceans we can begin to understand the great ecological questions about habitat loss,...
This Week’s Eco-Gadgets: Lights, Chargers and Jewelry
Once again, more nifty eco-gadgets are being created. Some of them are prototypes, while others are already on the market. This week’s little group includes living jewelry, human-powered lights, and a multi-functional solar charger; plus a lot more. Check them out: Lights A very simple, yet decadent choice would be the first eco-invention listed. Created by the Slovenian group Zek, these lights are made from recycled spray paint cans. They were also part of the 25 lights exhibit at the Galerija...
The Easy Fix That Isn’t: White Roofs May Increase Global Warming
If you’re interested in staving off climate change without trying too hard, painting your roof white seems like a complete no-brainer. It’s far cheaper than trading in your SUV for a Prius, and it turns the laws of physics to best advantage. Dark roofs absorb sunlight that heats up your house, office tower, or apartment building. That means you’re bound to crank up the energy-intensive air conditioner to keep pace in the summer months — and since electricity in the...
