Oldest dinosaur nests found in South Africa
Posted by Graham_Land in Nature, Science & Technology, Videos & Documentaries, 5 Feb 2012
Scientists recently made an eye-opening discovery at Golden Gate Highlands National Park in South Africa.
Several nests of Massospondylus, a 20ft (6m) long sauropod, including fossilized eggs and hatchling footprints, is increasing scientists knowledge of the nesting, breeding and mothering habits of dinosaurs.
The dinosaur nesting site is believed to be 190 million years old, some 100 million years older than any dinosaur nest previously found.
At least 10 nests were uncovered at several different rock levels. Each contained up to 34 round eggs in tightly clustered clutches. The distribution of the nests indicated that dinosaurs returned repeatedly to the same spot to lay their eggs.

Super-sized shipping: The impact of new mega ships, trucks and tunnels
More and more goods are being shipped from China to Europe in an unstoppable relationship based on cheap production and ever-increasing consumption. This means more energy and greenhouse gas emissions. But freight companies are also developing and implementing ways to become more energy efficient and lower their emissions. Danish shipping giant Maersk has ordered 10 new mega ships (with an option for 20 more) to be used between China and Europe. These floating blocks of skyscrapers can carry 20% more than...
Bacteria Gives the Green Light for Landmine Detection
Have you ever been told war stories over and over again by one of your relatives? Did they ever mention any injuries or deaths that happened courtesy of landmines? If so, you may be interested in the latest scientific developments. Thousands of people and animals are killed or wounded every year, thanks to landmines. Many of the landmine fields remain unmarked in places like: Iraq, Vietnam, Somalia, Cambodia and the Falklands. However, there may be away to detect landmines—before setting them...
FOCUS // CHINA – By All Costs: The Battle to Save China’s Rivers
If I don't take any risks, if I don't make some sort of contribution, the work won't be rewarding. There is a Chinese poem which says that a divine view is beheld from a perilous peak. -Wu Deng Ming, Chinese environmental activist ‘Black River - China’ is a documentary released in June 1996 by ABC Australia and distributed by Journeyman Pictures concerning the polluted Huai River basin, at the time home to 1/10th of China’s population. According to the report,...

Green Party party! UK Greens get first MP
In an historical UK election that has left many frustrated and probably no one satisfied, there was a silver – or if you'll forgive me – Green lining to the Conservative cloud that swept the nation. No, it wasn't named Clegg either, though one can only help that the Liberal Democrat Deputy Prime Minister will have a positive influence on the Cameron-led Conservative government. Caroline Lucas, head of the UK Green Party, made history by being the Party's first Member of...
The Permafrost is BURNING
Apart from being a really cool video that shows you quite clearly how massive the amount of carbon dioxide trapped under the permafrost is, this video should be an eye-opener for anyone concerned about climate change. As cool as it may be to see the gasses trapped under the permafrost burning up; the sad thing is this is happening at an extremely high rate all over lakes and ice packs in the frozen Arctic ground. According to Katey Walter Anthony (the...
A lesson on quality craftsmanship and sustainable design from a 44 Year-Old Toaster
Tim Hurst shares his fondness for heirloom pieces, particularly his prized vintage “Coronado” toaster. Manufactured by the now defunct Gamble-Skogmo Inc. in Minnesota, he purchased it for only $2 at a yard sale. Initially, he estimated that the chrome-wrapped toaster must have been four or five years old because it was still in pristine condition until he saw a message tied to the toaster that said: “THIS TOASTER WAS A WEDDING GIFT IN 1965. IT HAS BEEN USED DAILY SINCE THEN....
48 Pilot Whales Stranded Along New Zealand, 33 of Them Saved
This past weekend, New Zealand saw its third major whale stranding this season. On Saturday, 48 Pilot Whales were found stranded on South Island at Port Levy. Thanks to a vast amount of help from the Department of Conservation and numerous volunteers, 33 of the stranded whales were able to be coaxed back into the water and saved. Unfortunately, the other 15 didn’t make it and joined the other 125 beached whales that died earlier in the season. According to the Department...
Space news: Oceans on Mars, the apocalypse from above and no more men on the Moon
Scientists at the university of Colorado have discovered evidence that suggests that much of Mars was once covered by ocean. From an article by Australia's ABC News: To test their theory Dr Hynek and Mr Di Achille used global databases of known deltaic deposits and valley networks, together with topography data from a laser altimeter aboard NASA's Mars Observer spacecraft which is orbiting the red planet. If Mars had that much water 3.5 billion years ago, what happened to it? And did it...
Breaking news: Agreement reached in Copenhagen – modest, meaningful or mishap?
I've just finished watching a live feed of U.S. President Barack Obama speaking at a press conference regarding the results of negotiations at COP15. News sources are reporting that a deal has been reached by principal players at the UNFCCC summit in Copenhagen, but is it significant or useless? Is something better than nothing? President Obama explained that the agreement is not legally binding, but it is 'meaningful and unprecedented'. According to a breaking BBC News report 'A US government official...
