Vivid pink or orange? You choose. Coloured chicks are winning the hearts of Pakistani kids.

The birds have been moved from livestock to a new category. They are now family pets.

To entice customers, especially teenagers, the wayside dealers dye the birds in vivid colours. Such a living commodity is not only more conspicuous, but also more attractive.

Prices of the chicks range from 20 to 50 Pakistani rupees, which is about 15 to 40 eurocents.

What happens to these trendy pets when they grow bigger? We are waiting for a reaction from animal rights organizations.

Before they do that also here, no one dared to correct until some environmentalist group condemned the practice of coloring the chicks for kids amusement, after that there’ re still some isolated cases but very few now a days…Henny Penny would be so sad seeing that, I wonder what Chicken Little would say too!!!!!

I’m wondering, Murielle, that these parents tell their kids when they put the ‘pet’ in a pot. It must be a traumatic experience. Or perhaps they don’t care? If so, they might not care about their human friends in the future either.

    Hey Joanna,
Thanks for letting us know about this. I really don’t like the idea of keeping chicks – and chickens as pets. I really wonder if any of the “pet owners” actually keep these chickens passed their chick age. I have 4 chickens in my backyard, and I can tell you this: chickens are not pets.
