Videos: Etna erupts, wildfires in NZ and OZ and Sea Shepherd vs. Japanese whalers
Posted by Graham_Land in Conservation, Natural disasters, Videos & Documentaries, 8 Jan 2012
Leave it to ITN to come up with some short and (sometimes) sweet videos with which to catch up on some of the week’s environmental news.
We’ve gathered three (yes, three) bite-sized eco-news reports in one place. Why? Because, like the Mouseketeers, we like you!
First, check out Italy’s Mount Etna as she spectacularly spews forth molten lava and ash into the Sicilian sky.
Next there’s a report on antipodean wildfires raging across New Zealand and Australia.
Finally, Sea Shepherd and Japanese whalers fight for both whale rights and whaling rights on the high seas. Guess who fights for which.

Wallpapers laced with pesticide touted as a safer way to combat malaria
Malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases remain a serious threat in many poor communities around the globe; fogging entire towns and neighborhoods used to be the normal practice to prevent this. That method is not only expensive and outdated; it is also impractical because it is off-target and widespread spraying makes most mosquitoes more resistant to the pesticide. Insects, wildlife and other domestic animals also remain at risk from exposure to pesticides due to fogging. More contemporary and targeted pesticide application methods...
Unpopular Environmental Issues We Should Care About
If the realm of environmental issues was a high school, then Climate Change would be the most popular girl in school (the head cheerleader) and she would surround her clique with Pollution, Animal Conservation and Deforestation. Yes indeed, Global Warming seems to hogging all the attention these past years, thanks especially to a little movie called “The Inconvenient Truth.” Rightly so, Climate Change will probably be this year’s (and next’s?) Prom Queen. In the bottom rung of the social ladder as...
Russia’s wildfires cover Moscow in smoke
Wildfires continue to spread in Russia, with an additional 270 igniting just within the past day or so. According to Russia’s emergency ministry, a total of 554 wildfires are currently burning over an area of 190,000 hectares (470,000 acres). So far 276 fires have been extinguished. Smoke from the fires is blanketing Moscow and preventing air traffic. The city experienced carbon monoxide at 6 times the maximum permitted level. From a CNN report: According to Russia's health and social development ministry, wildfires have killed...
Undercover Stint Reveals Japan is Bribing Nations to Receive Pro-Whaling Support
Thanks to a recent stint pulled by some undercover reporters it would appear that the Japanese whalers are continuing their course aboard a sinking ship (so to speak). According to the Sunday Times, Japan has bribed a number of small nations in attempt to earn their support at the upcoming IWC meeting. Undercover reporters pretended to be representatives of a Swiss billionaire conservationist and approached officials from pro-whaling nations, offering them a special package if they changed their votes. During negotiations, many...
BOOK REVIEW // ‘The World Without Us’ by Alan Weisman: A fascinating, ecologically relevant experiment in thought
What if humanity suddenly ceased to exist? How would the natural and physical world react, unhindered and no longer actively shaped by mankind’s attempts to control and fashion it? Alan Weisman’s thought provoking exploration reads a bit like a piece of visionary science fiction, but the science is sound and the events predicted are perhaps inevitable, at least within the author’s framework. The World Without Us pits nature’s power vs. man’s legacy and comes up with an absorbing “if and...
Weird weather news: Hailstorms around the world
It must be hail season, though I’ve never before heard that a hail season exists. On Tuesday I was caught in a sudden, though fairly light, hailstorm in central Scotland. Yesterday I read a post here on Greenfudge that mentioned a recent hailstorm in Texas that caused disruptions at Dallas Fort Worth Airport. And it’s not just the Scotland and Texas that have experienced hail this week. A poor doggy was left tied out during a hailstorm in Cheltenham, England. Furthermore, California crops suffered...
How Many Butterflies are in Your Area?
86 Cabbage Butterflies, 5 Spring Azures, 4 Eastern Tiger Swallowtails, 1 Monarch, and at least 8 other unidentifiable species. Those are our totals for our part in the annual North American Butterfly Association Butterfly Counts program (thus far). Every year, butterfly counts are taken throughout Canada, the US, and Mexico (and most likely other countries around the world—but this isn’t about them). These counts allow regular people to get involved with the scientific process and learn more about the environment around...
Recycling magic: guy turns plastic bottle into trumpet!
We're always on the lookout for cool recycling uses of everyday objects. In my quest for recycling magic I came across this video of a guy using a plastic bottle as a trumpet. The music might not be 100% but it definitely is good enough. He gets an A++ in my book! Enjoy! ...
Scientists drill into the past to learn more about global warming
Some very old ice in northern Greenland may provide insights into how our climate might change in the future. Scientists at the NEEM ice coring project in Greenland are drilling into ice sheets to retrieve ice from the previous interglacial period. Interglacials are warm intervals within ice ages. The previous interglacial, called the Eemian, ended 115,000 years ago. NEEM (North Greenland Eemian Ice Drilling) hopes to learn more about what our future climate will be like by studying the distant...
G8+Gates? Microsoft founder joins national governments in funding poor farmers
The Gates Foundation is a philanthropic organization founded by Bill and Melinda Gates with the principal aims of improving healthcare, fighting poverty and improving education. On Thursday the foundation announced that it would contribute $30 million (€22.5m/₤19.5m) to the Global Agriculture and Food Security Program, an international fund set up to aid for farmers in the developing world. From an AFP report: The fund was first discussed at the G8 meeting in L'Aquila, Italy...

hehheheheh they would rather do’ harakiri’ or shout ‘Let’s volt in!!!’ than to be a disgrace to all…..
More like their obvious pretense. It would be much more honest if they just said, ‘look, we want to hunt whales so screw you all.’
all for one ,one for all huh? It might be bite-sized news but the issues were all huge enough not to be ignored, Japans modus operandi, whaling for research duhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!
