Videos: Etna erupts, wildfires in NZ and OZ and Sea Shepherd vs. Japanese whalers
Posted by Graham_Land in Conservation, Natural disasters, Videos & Documentaries, 8 Jan 2012
Leave it to ITN to come up with some short and (sometimes) sweet videos with which to catch up on some of the week’s environmental news.
We’ve gathered three (yes, three) bite-sized eco-news reports in one place. Why? Because, like the Mouseketeers, we like you!
First, check out Italy’s Mount Etna as she spectacularly spews forth molten lava and ash into the Sicilian sky.
Next there’s a report on antipodean wildfires raging across New Zealand and Australia.
Finally, Sea Shepherd and Japanese whalers fight for both whale rights and whaling rights on the high seas. Guess who fights for which.

UK firms catch heat from Canada’s tar sands
British companies with financial ties to Canada's controversial tar sands oil operations will face considerable pressure this week from UK environmental lobbies and investors with ethical concerns. The tar sands of Alberta, Canada are the world’s largest deposits of bitumen, a heavy, black form of crude oil extracted via surface mining. Generally considered to be of more harm to the environment than conventional oil drilling, tar sand mining has taken a heavy toll on Alberta's air, land, water, wildlife and people. According...
Planet Blow: Surfers warm about coming ecological disaster
Nick de Wannemaeker, Belgian windsurfing champion and O’Neill rider who - I’m very proud to say - is my cousin (well actually my husband’s cousin but who’s counting), stars in a dark, epic surf movie highlighting the ecological disasters at hand if we don’t evaluate and change our approach to and relationship with nature. The movie called Planet Blow is a small independent film, produced and directed by Sylvain Demercastel (artist, musician, director and also an O’Neill rider), about the adventures...
Tsunami waves in the sky over Birmingham
On Friday morning in the sky over Birmingham in the U.S. state of Alabama, clouds in the shape of tsunami waves appeared. They have been called a "surfer's dream" by the locals. Strange? It turns out that what was seen is actually a well known phenomenon to meteorologists. Residents of Birmingham documented the sighting and asked the local meteorological services to explain what it was that they had seen. The waves in the sky are an example of a Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. In...
World’s Largest Tiger Sanctuary Created in Myanmar!
Good news for tigers: the world’s largest tiger sanctuary is now open in Myanmar! The Hukaung Valley Tiger Reserve is actually more than tripling the size of a tiger sanctuary already in place, and is now believed to take up the entire Hukaung Valley, which covers almost 8,450 square miles (21,970 square km). A sanctuary this big could hold up to several hundred tigers, but thanks to poaching, there may be less than 50 of these big cats left in the...
Consumer Reports: Chicken Eaters, Beware!
If you happen to live in the USA and like to eat fresh broiler chickens, then you may be setting yourself up for some nasty illnesses. A recent Consumer Reports investigation discovered that those particular chickens (fresh broiler) contain high rates of salmonella and/or campylobacter—2 main bacterial causes of foodborne disease (i.e., food poisoning). Exposure to either of the bacteria types may cause things like: abdominal cramps, fever and vomiting; however, Campylobacter can lead to more serious health conditions, such as...
Animal Extinction: Another One Bites The Dust
Yesterday, conservations confirmed the extinction of the Alaotra Grebe: a bird that was only found in the lakes of Madagascar. The announcement comes 25 years after the last confirmed sighting of the bird, also known as the Rusty Grebe and Delacour's Little Grebe. The decline and ultimate extinction of this little bird can be contributed to habitat destruction, numerous accidental captures in nylon gill-nets, and the introduction of a predator: the Snakehead Murrel. This is a fish that can grow...
Recycling bins with microchips
The City of Cleveland is spending $2.5M to equip recycling bins with microchips in an attempt to become more green. The municipality is going to give each household two different garbage cans: one for rubbish, one for recyclables. Each will have a micro-chip inside. This is all part of a new automated trash collection system. Micro-chips will be placed in both your recycling bin and your waste bin. Each chip generates a report that tells the city how efficient their waste collection services are....
2,000 attend banned concert for Russian forest preservation
Environmental activists have been fighting to save Russia’s Khimki forest from plans to build a federal highway through it. On Sunday a rock concert in protest of the highway plans was held in Moscow, attracting some 2,000 people. Police prevented sound equipment from entering the concert area, but well-known Russian rock singer and political critic Yuri Shevchuk performed songs without amplification. From an AFP article: While the demonstration on Pushkin Square against the construction of the road had been sanctioned by the Moscow...
14 dead, more missing due to floods in central Europe
Heavy rains have caused rivers to burst their banks in Germany, Poland, Lithuania and the Czech Republic. A total of 14 have died so far from the flooding and more are missing. According to Australian broadsheet The Age the Neisse River, which forms part of the border between Germany and Poland before flowing into the Czech Republic, has swelled to a height of 7.07 meters, over three times its normal level ‘and the highest since records began in 1912’. More rivers are...
China enforces the use of renewable energy with new law
Chalk another one up for the efficiency of authoritarian rule. According to an article from Reuters, the government of China has passed a law requiring power grid operators to buy 'all the electricity produced by renewable energy generators'. This will encourage the use of power from renewable sources such as wind and solar energy plants over cheaper electricity from coal plants. The Chinese State Council energy department now has the authority to 'determine the proportion of renewable energy power generation to...

hehheheheh they would rather do’ harakiri’ or shout ‘Let’s volt in!!!’ than to be a disgrace to all…..
More like their obvious pretense. It would be much more honest if they just said, ‘look, we want to hunt whales so screw you all.’
all for one ,one for all huh? It might be bite-sized news but the issues were all huge enough not to be ignored, Japans modus operandi, whaling for research duhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!
