20 tons of dead herring on beach in Norway
Posted by Graham_Land in Weird & Wonderful, Wildlife & Flora, 2 Jan 2012
A beach in Nordreisa, Norway is now completely blanketed in dead herring.
It is unknown what caused the herring to die; whether it was tides, predatory fish or something else.
Scientists would like to test the dead fish to discover the cause of death.
From the Guardian:
For doom-mongers, the fish were the second a sign in as many days that 2012 would live up to the apocalyptic prediction of the ancient Mayans, after hundreds of blackbirds reportedly dropped dead in Arkansas.

Disaster tourism: Holidays in Chernobyl’s exclusion zone
Besides older villagers returning and settling the still forbidden and still contaminated land around the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the Ukraine, another strange development has been taking place: guided tours. Chernobyl and the abandoned downwind city of Prypiat has become a bit of a tourist destination. I say it's a 'strange development', but I completely understand the fascination with post apocalyptic landscapes. The thought of traipsing through a 'living museum' contaminated with radioactive fallout is a bit less appealing, however....
The Importance of Owning a Green Car Today
A green car is any of a number of vehicles available on the market that offer high mileage through either hybrid or electric technology - or a combination of both. If you're considering buying a new vehicle, there are many different reasons to put a green vehicle at the top of your wish list. • Fuel economy. With a green car, you'll get better fuel economy. Of course, that means the cost of driving your vehicle is lower than with a...
Alternative climate summit starts Monday in Bolivia
The World People's Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth begins on Monday, April 19th in Cochabamba, Bolivia. The summit, which is not under the auspices of the UN, is seen as the alternative to Copenhagen, with more of a focus on poor peoples, social justice and environmental activism. In addition to scientists, representatives of indigenous peoples, NGOs and government officials, the conference will welcome prominent authors, academic luminaries and Hollywood celebrities. The final group an obvious and...
Africa and Asia = ivory supply and demand
2009 was a banner year for the confiscation of illegal ivory, with 14,000 articles made from the body parts of elephants seized – a rise of more than 2,000 pieces compared with 2007, according to an article in Sunday's Observer. But this increase is not down to better law enforcement, but rather a growth in the grizzly trade spurned on by soaring ivory prices in East Asia, which have risen from ₤150 ($245/ €170) per kg in 2004 to a...
Breaking: Gulf oil leak now thought to have been leaking up to 40,000 barrels a day
A new estimate has been made regarding the oil that has been leaking from the damaged well in the Gulf of Mexico: 20,000 to 40,000 barrels per day, or 840,000-1.7 million gallons (3.2-6.4 million liters). This estimate comes from the head of the US Geological Survey and is around twice as much oil as was previously gauged to have been escaping from the well. Scientists used new high definition footage provided by BP after demands from the US Congress, according to...
Fort Stanton Cave is still growing
New Mexico – Researchers recently found that the stunning tunnel-like Fort Stanton Cave, touted as one of the state’s longest cave formation is growing even longer. Scientists discovered increasing deposits of calcite around the cave; the crystal of calcium carbonite, calcite is considered as a major rock forming mineral that contour different cave formations. Estimated to be 850 years old, the undeveloped cave is considered a baby in geological terms. Without lights, elevators or pavement, it is one of the most...
Green Party party! UK Greens get first MP
In an historical UK election that has left many frustrated and probably no one satisfied, there was a silver – or if you'll forgive me – Green lining to the Conservative cloud that swept the nation. No, it wasn't named Clegg either, though one can only help that the Liberal Democrat Deputy Prime Minister will have a positive influence on the Cameron-led Conservative government. Caroline Lucas, head of the UK Green Party, made history by being the Party's first Member of...
Unpopular Environmental Issues We Should Care About
If the realm of environmental issues was a high school, then Climate Change would be the most popular girl in school (the head cheerleader) and she would surround her clique with Pollution, Animal Conservation and Deforestation. Yes indeed, Global Warming seems to hogging all the attention these past years, thanks especially to a little movie called “The Inconvenient Truth.” Rightly so, Climate Change will probably be this year’s (and next’s?) Prom Queen. In the bottom rung of the social ladder as...
Endangered Species of the Week: Hispaniolan solenodon
Species: Hispaniolan solenodon (Solenodon paradoxus) Status: Endangered (EN) Interesting Fact: The Hispaniolan solenodon is capable of secreting toxic saliva! The ancient and distinctive Hispaniolan solenodon is one of only two solenedons in existence. It resembles a large, stocky shrew, and has a distinctive, elongated snout with a unique ball-and-socket joint, which allows for an amazing level of flexibility. During the night, this species forages for prey using the flexible snout to explore cracks and crevices. It lunges at its chosen prey, pinning it...
New Study: 1/6 Of All Mediterranean Mammals Face Extinction
The latest “Red List of Threatened Species” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature reports that 1 out of 6 Mediterranean Mammals are in danger of being extinct. A total of 320 Mediterranean mammals (excluding dolphins and whales) were studied for the list. Not surprisingly, habitat loss and degradation were the top causes, brought about by “include expansion and intensification of agriculture, urbanization, infrastructure development, pollution and climate change.” One of the study’s co-authors, Helen Temple, called for awareness...

To be fair, this could be something that just happened, like due to a storm (large fresh water influx into salt water) and tides, etc. As far as the Apocalypse goes, this is just a tool for religious and state authorities to control people and always has been, in my opinion. Even raining frogs has a scientific explanation!
though this was not the first time it occurred but definitely it is becoming a trend, there were times where they say that level of toxicity of the water in certain areas turned out very high, but of course we all know the reason of this, it all boils down to ‘climate change’ nothing else……Well if they consider it a sign so be it, but isn’t unfair that instead of accepting the fact that it’s all our fault why all of these are happening, we will divert it into the so called ‘apocalyptic sign’ what for ? so that we will feel non guilty and would not do anything about it coz they say ‘there’s nothing we could do, coz it was all prophesied? I don’t want to sound very religious or all knowing on this matter but the book of REVELATION also known as APOCALYPSIS is overly used and overly sensationalized without proper knowledge what it is all about…read the background why it was written, to whom it was for, understand it, stop interpreting the book…..
