Tsunami waves in the sky over Birmingham
Posted by Joanna in Nature, Videos & Documentaries, Weird & Wonderful, 20 Dec 2011
On Friday morning in the sky over Birmingham in the U.S. state of Alabama, clouds in the shape of tsunami waves appeared. They have been called a “surfer’s dream” by the locals. Strange? It turns out that what was seen is actually a well known phenomenon to meteorologists.
Residents of Birmingham documented the sighting and asked the local meteorological services to explain what it was that they had seen.
The waves in the sky are an example of a Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. In the air the phenomenon arises when
a strong wind causes an imbalance in the boundary between the layers of warm and cold air.
Then the higher layer moves faster than the bottom, causing turbulence and creating a system reminiscent
of ocean waves.

Cheap meat kills the Amazon: UK dinners destroy rainforest
Much of the feed for British livestock comes from soybeans imported from South America – mainly Brazil and Argentina. According to an article in the Telegraph, 350,000 hectares of rainforest is being cut down to grow soy for UK animal feed. Environmental group Friends of the Earth (FoE) has published a report entitled ‘Pastures New’ detailing how the British meat and dairy industry indirectly causes rainforest destruction in South America. The report incorporates new research by the Royal Agricultural College stating that...
Republicans don’t believe in climate change, Obama gives up on green agenda
After last week’s election the U.S. Congress is now a place where climate change is questioned more than feared. According to ThinkProgress.org, a progressive blog by the Center for American Progress, half of the newly elected Republicans don’t believe in man-made climate change while 86 percent of them are against climate change legislation if it costs money to the government. Back in December 2009, at the COP-15 conference in Copenhagen, President Obama pledged to cut the U.S. emission levels of 2005...
Brad Pitt is Making it Right
In 2006, during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, a new, nonprofit organization—the Make it Right Foundation--was formed by one of the world’s most renowned celebrities: Brad Pitt. The most recent project of the foundation is the creation of a floating home. Designed by Morphosis Architects, the new Float House is able to turn into a giant raft that will rise up on guide posts to keep it from floating away, should another flooding occur. The downside to the home is in...
Geo-engineering and the problem of sea levels
Geo-engineering doesn't prevent at all the rise of the tides. Engineering on a global scale is not a solution, even in an emergency, to the climate damage caused by human activities. This is the conclusion reached by a team of British, Chinese and Danish researchers after a new study on the future of the Earth's oceans. In their opinion there is no escape: sea levels will rise at least 30-70 cm by the end of 2100, even using the latest...
Rhode Island Sized Ice Chunk Breaks off Antarctica
Ice. Oh, the many uses and happenings that involve ice. It keeps your drinks cold. It’s a pain to deal with in winter. It’s been known to put holes in ships and has quite the alarming melt factor as of late. The biggest news happened down at Antarctica. Apparently, a chunk of ice bigger than the size of Rhode Island broke away from Antarctica and then shattered into even more pieces. If you don’t know your US states or geography, Rhode...
China ahead in renewable energy
While the United States and other countries offer incentives for development in the renewable energy industry, China passes laws that require it. A New York Times article highlights the ways in which China is beating the pants off other nations when it comes to making clean energy. For example, China now leads the world in the manufacturing of solar panels and wind turbines. The state funded Chinese Renewable Energy Industries Association claims that renewable energy jobs in China increase by...
Update: European flights still uncertain due to ash from Iceland volcano
The cloud of ash over the UK and much of Europe is continuing to disrupt air traffic as eruptions from Iceland's Eyjafjallajökull volcano continue. When flights will resume regular service is still unknown. UK air traffic controllers have suggested that British airspace may reopen at 7am tomorrow, yet major carriers have cancelled all flights for Monday. From the Guardian: Over 20 countries have airspace restrictions, many banning all non-emergency flights, but commercial operators, including British Airways, KLM and Air France, have carried...

Climate talks in Bonn yield more talks
The first UN climate talks since Copenhagen ended in Bonn, Germany, much as expected – with little concrete progress. The cleavage between industrialized and developing countries that characterized the Copenhagen conference is likely to continue through the next major climate talks in Cancun, Mexico at the end of the year. This rich poor divide provided the fireworks for the meetings in Bonn, which ultimately ended in an agreement to intensify negotiations before Mexico. From an article in the Guardian: In what was interpreted...
No more toys in San Francisco’s Happy Meals
I’ve wanted to campaign for this for a long time. Restaurant or kids’ meal toys have always bugged me. For, as good as the marketing idea behind them might be, it only makes their existence and popularity all the more absurd. Toys in kids’ meals are a selling trick, and simply nothing more. Restaurant toys are not REAL toys. They are Asian manufactured gadgets of average to low quality, often unfit for toddlers, but equally unfit for any other child, as...
