They ran naked for the sake of the environment!
Posted by Joanna in Conservation, Politics, Pollution, Sustainable living, 16 Dec 2011
Several dozen men ran naked around the University of Manila. They wanted to draw attention to the need for greater environmental protection. Bare runs have become a tradition at this Filipino University.
Every year a group of students meet to fight in defense of the environment. The tradition started over 40 years ago. Then, the students were running around in protest against President Ferdinand Marcos. This year, runners fought for purification of the local rivers.
Although the message was not clear for all, this year’s event has been watched by hundreds.
“Whatever their advocacy was, I think it will definitely be heard and exposed,” said a student Mariel Abao.
“Even though they have a weird way of expressing it, at least the issue is given light.”
Watch the bare butts here!

Germany: Protests against nuclear power extension highlight public opposition
Germany’s cabinet has voted to extend nuclear power use in the country by an average of 12 years. According to legislation passed in 2002 by the Social Democratic-Green Party coalition, all nuclear power stations in Germany were to be decommissioned by 2022. Not any more. German Chancellor Angela Merkel of the Christian Democratic Party, which rules as part of a center right coalition, sees the extension as a way to generate tax income, while meeting greenhouse gas emission reduction goals and transitioning to...
Venezuela’s gold rush is an ecological and human disaster
As international gold prices rise, demand for the precious metal increases and prospectors in search of fortune – or simply trying to eek out a living – are flooding into gold mining areas. Peru, Honduras and The Congo have all been in the news as nations where gold mining is linked to environmental, political and human disaster. Sensitive ecological regions of Venezuela – including rainforest– are also suffering the effects of a toxic gold rush. Toxic – because of the...
Tar sands: China invests in Canadian oil as U.S. moves out
The Canadian province of Alberta is home to a particularly dirty kind of oil field: so called 'Tar Sands'. The world's largest source of bitumen – a heavy, black form of crude oil extracted by surface mining – is located in the northeastern portion of the province. Most of the oil mined from Canada's tar sands is destined for refineries in the United States, but with American companies shying away from the oil sands due to environmental pressure and China...
A drought big as Texas
As droughts cause famines in poor parts of the world like Somalia, they also affect the developed world, albeit in less catastrophic ways. France and the UK have worryingly dry areas, but nowhere so much as the US state of Texas. Have the ‘water wars’ already come to the United States? Well, maybe not, but things look bleak and even downright apocalyptic in parts of the state. Never a wet place, climate change and population growth in arid areas do not...
India plans to remove 400,000 people from burning coalfields
Dozens of giant underground coal fires have been burning in the Indian state of Jharkhand for almost 100 years, according to a BBC News report. Attempts at extinguishing the fires have so far been unsuccessful. Now, the Indian government wants to move in and put out the fires with water and chemicals, and subsequently remove the coal. The problem is that some 400,000 people live on the coalfields – the desperately poor that survive by scavenging for coal. It is a...

Centralia, PA – An American ghost town with an underground mine fire
Those intrepid 'slacker' journalists at VBS.tv certainly have a knack for finding fascinating stories. This time it's the curious tale of Centralia, a former coalmining town in Pennsylvania, which had an active mining industry from the mid 19th century until a mine fire broke out in 1962. It's still burning. Watch the VBS report about Centralia below. By Graham Land Additional resources: Smithsonian Magazine – Fire in the Hole Pictures of Centralia...
U.S. – West Coast to welcome first wave of electric cars
2010 means electric cars will soon be humming around America's city streets, emitting nothing into the air but a sense of self-satisfaction and superiority. Even Prius drivers will hang their heads in shame, outdone and one upped in the latest 'whose got the newest green toy' competition. Of course, most parts of the U.S. will have a bit of respite before the coming vehicular revolution kicks into top gear, and can continue belching noxious fumes with impunity for a little...
Bigger is better: Plans unveiled for giant offshore wind turbines in the UK
A massive 10-megawatt wind turbine is currently being built in Northumberland, UK for offshore wind power generation – believed by many to be the green future of British power. The first example is a towering 574 ft (175 m) turbine of mammoth proportions named 'Britannia' whose three 500 ft (150 m) diameter 30-ton blades could power 10,000 homes. The Clipper Windpower Marine, team who designed the turbine, clearly believes that bigger is better, and sees no practical size limits in building giant...
