Friday videos: Waving bear, couch potato seal
Posted by Graham_Land in Videos & Documentaries, Wildlife & Flora, 16 Dec 2011
We’ve got two silly animal videos today, courtesy of ITN (and neither are about those gay penguins who recently ‘broke up’).
First there are the waving bears of the Olympic Game Farm in Washington State, US. These retired Hollywood film bears (read: slave animals) are tame Kodiak bears who, when waved at by gawking tourists, politely wave back. Bit of a gimmick, but at least they no longer have to take orders from Steven Spielberg and can instead lie around waving at caravans of naked apes.
Check out the video here:
So… from a bit of news about animals who were forced into captivity and made to perform in a human environment to a wild animal that forced itself into someone’s house and onto the sofa for a bit of a snooze.
In New Zealand a baby seal flapped its way out of the wintery sea, across a main road, through the cat flap and onto the couch, where it was found watching Animal Planet and eating a box of Chocodiles. OK, I made that last bit up, but the rest is true.
See for yourself and have a nice weekend.

Madam, worry: Young adults in Britain can’t name a single female scientist
Know any female scientists? 90% of 18-24 year olds in the UK don’t, according to a recent poll by the Royal Society. Sure, everyone knows who Albert Einstein is – well, the poll shows that almost half do, anyway – but few can name French/Polish chemist and physicist Marie Skłodowska Curie. What about primatologist Jane Goodall? You know, the one you see on the BBC hanging out with chimps? Oh, you only watch Britain’s Got Talent and MTV. I won’t even...
10:10 Campaign Seeks to Cut Carbon Emissions Sooner Rather than Later
With Global Warming being the topic of the past 3 or four years, governments around the world are seeking solutions to the problem. The United States for example, has a bill in the Senate which calls for the reduction of carbon emissions by 2050. But, will this make a real significance in the world? According to scientists, our planet really only has a limited amount of carbon it can absorb and they estimate that in about 30 or 40 years,...
Breaking: Glacier chunk falls into Peruvian lake causing tsunami, death
I didn't know a tsunami could occur in a lake. I didn't know a falling piece glacier could cause a tsunami either. But that's just what happened in the Peruvian Andes when an ice block broke from the massive Hualcan glacier and plunged into a lake, creating a 23-meter tsunami. The resulting rush of water flooded several towns and resulted in at least one death. The governor of the region that includes the area where the tsunami occurred blamed the disaster...
Creature Feature: The Black Abalone
This week’s Creature Feature takes us along a stretch of the Pacific Coast from Mendocino County, California to Cabo San Lucas, Baja California, Mexico. The Black Abalone is a critically endangered large sea snail, or gastropod mollusk. The shell can be one of the following colors: dark brown, dark green, dark blue or other dark (nearly black) shade, but not black itself. However, the rest of the animal (tentacles, foot, etc.) is all black. The inside of the shell has a...
Texas Company Finds Solution to the Problem of Syringes and Medical Waste
Over the years, we’ve heard horror stories of people finding medical syringes washed up on beaches, in the ocean, and other unusual places. They’ve posed a threat to the environment and general safety for quite some time. Luckily, one company has come up with a way to recycle syringes and put them to good use. Sharps Compliance has created PELLA-DRX—a type of building material made from recycled syringes and other medical waste. Now, don’t be alarmed, the Texas-based company assures that...
BP, US govt covered up pre-Deepwater Horizon blowout in Caspian Sea
As the Deepwater Horizon trial progresses in Louisiana, with US District Judge Carl Barbier pruning down the defendants to three (Halliburton, Transocean and BP), another little-known, but related story is resurfacing. Investigative journalist Greg Palast writes on his website about an almost identical blowout on another BP oil platform in the Caspian Sea. The Caspian rig blowout occurred 17 months before the Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, which resulted in the deaths of 11 crewmembers. Both rigs had...
Fighting back: Occupy Our Homes kicks off in California
The couple views the wreckageAnd dreams of home sweet home,They'd almost paid the mortgage,Then the system dropped its bomb. –Crass “Systematic Death”Those suffering from the effects of the subprime mortgage crisis include working families who for various reasons are unable – or simply not allowed by their banks – to make payments on their homes. The very financial institutions, which caused and even orchestrated the crisis, were later bailed out by taxpayers so that, apparently, they could get back to their...
Is solar power silly in countries with little sun?
Several recent articles in the British and international media have dealt with the question of solar power and government schemes that encourage homeowners to install solar panels. One such plan, announced yesterday by UK energy and climate change secretary, Ed Miliband is a Pay As You Save program that provides 'green loans' to those who install energy saving eco-measures. The loans are purported to cover installation and purchase costs while money saved in energy bills is meant to outweigh...
A mass slaughter of dogs is currently being prepared, an estimated 3 million are to be destroyed
Sri Lankan authorities have agreed to the elimination of 3 million stray dogs. The government has decided to cancel the decision prohibiting the capture and killing their dogs - said Maithripala Sirisena, Minister of Health of Sri Lanka. In this country, two thousand people are annually hospitalised because of bites inflicted by strays searching for food. According to authorities, the number of wandering dogs already exceeded 3 million, and has become a serious problem for public health. The killing of stray dogs ban came...
Chimpanzees Show No Fear When Dealing With Wildfires
Chimpanzees are recognized as close primate cousins of humans. Recent findings—published in the American Journal of Physical Anthropology—show that these loveable primates may have developed another human-like trait: the ability to predict wildfire movement and how to react accordingly. Jill Pruetz, a primatologist of Iowa State University, believes this development may help scientists gain better understanding of our primitive ancestors and how or when they first learned to control fire. Puertz was spending time in Senegal in 2006, observing savanna chimpanzees...

hehehehhhh yeah, pretty amazing
Funny that the seal actually chose to climb up on the sofa once it was in the warm house. Just like a dog… like it knew what a sofa is for.
ohhhhhhhhh cute…It just goes to show how smart these animals are ….They’re wild but manage to be subdued..unlike us we’re far more smart, but to subdue us is the wildest thing one could ever manage.
