Little Bear in the Big City

An unusual guest visited the residents of one of the streets in Canadian Vancouver. A bear came along to the suburbs of the city on…
a garbage truck!
City cleaning professionals say that the little black bear got into the truck probably when digging into leftover food inside one of the litter bins. Quite unconsciously, he treated himself with a ride to Vancouver.
After opening the hatch of the vehicle, the bear climbed up to the very top, where he was noticed by two pedestrians. The rescuers were trying to get the one-year old animal down for about an hour.
He seemed to be overwhelmed by the situation and almost fell from the truck.
Fortunately, the little bear slipped into a specially prepared sleeve. Later, he was transferred to the wild environment – the forest in the vicinity of Vancouver.

Boston prep school library sees books disappear and replaced by 18 e-readers
James Tracy, headmaster of Cushing Academy, looks at books as an “outdated technology” ready for replacement. The e-library will become a high tech “learning center”, with three flat screen televisions, laptops, 18 e-readers and a coffee bar. This project, close to a cost of $500,000 (€350,000), is amongst the first of its kind. Read the full article here...
The White House is Officially Going Solar…Again!
Remember the article a few months ago about the Globama Campaign? If not, the campaign was an idea to get the White House to go solar; more specifically, solar company Sungevity offered to install a rooftop solar panel system on the President's infamous home for free. It would seem all that campaigning and petitioning finally paid off because the White House is officially announcing plans to go solar! I'm not sure if they took Sungevity's offer specifically, but what I do...
Friday videos: Waving bear, couch potato seal
We’ve got two silly animal videos today, courtesy of ITN (and neither are about those gay penguins who recently ‘broke up’). First there are the waving bears of the Olympic Game Farm in Washington State, US. These retired Hollywood film bears (read: slave animals) are tame Kodiak bears who, when waved at by gawking tourists, politely wave back. Bit of a gimmick, but at least they no longer have to take orders from Steven Spielberg and can instead lie around waving...
Chimpanzees and Other Animals Display Altruistic Behavior
In the past, a typical family had a mother, father, and approximately 2.3 kids. That was the norm—though I’m still trying to figure out how a third of a child (.3) is normal. Today, families come in all shapes and sizes. There are single parents, there are interracial families, there are same-gender parents, and there are a lot of foster families and adoptions happening more every day. A fascinating discovery, however, shows that humans are not the only creature to have...
Oil news: The fight over offshore crude in the US and Brazil
When US President Barack Obama opened up large areas of America's Atlantic coastline to new oil drilling two weeks ago, some astute observers suggested that it might not be much more than a political maneuver. There is a distinct lack of knowledge concerning how much oil is out there; estimates put the amount of the Atlantic coast at 2 billion barrels (or 100 days of consumption) to 10 billion. According to a Newsweek article, it will be decades until we...
Solar powered Spain
Solar power is a hot project in sunny Spain. Outside of Seville you'll find the world's first commercial solar tower, which appears like a modernist church spire surrounded by an adoring flock of robotic minions. The minions are in fact mirrors – or heliostats – which reflect sunlight onto a receiver located at the top of the monolithic tower. A CNN article explores the PS 10 and forthcoming PS 20 solar power tower projects in Spain: Each heliostat measures 120 square meters,...
Mid-sized, affordable electric cars – the Green people’s choice!
Remember when the Volkswagen Beetle really was the people’s car? Affordable, remarkably fuel efficient for its time and cute as a bug, the Beetle really was a revolution in private transportation. But private transportation is one of the things that got us into this mess of climate change and smog-choked cities. Surely there must be a Green option that isn’t either exorbitantly priced – like the Tesla – or dinky enough to make a Smart car look like a Hummer,...
We are greenwashing ourselves – Slavoj Zizek on ‘cultural capitalism’
Slavoj Zizek has kind of been carrying the torch for intellectual Marxists in recent years. He is both a polemic and entertaining figure – a true academic ‘rock star’. He also lectures in clear, understandable language unlike many academic types, though some of his scholarly writings can be pretty bewildering. In the following video Zizek discusses what he calls ‘cultural capitalism’. It is essentially about how we may do good things within the structures of a bad system, while in fact...
The Great Plastiki Voyage: From San Francisco to Sydney in a Plastic Bottle Boat
Imagine a vessel made from approximately 12,500 reclaimed plastic soda bottles and you will have one of the most interesting creations (and story) of our time. The Plastiki started as an idea of David de Rothschild and thanks to further inspiration by the famous Kon-Tiki voyage (led by Thor Heyerdahl), the idea slowly became a reality. Since it would take a rather long time to explain the story and process of it all, you can read about it here (pdf file)...
Climate change affecting Rwanda’s gorillas
According to a UN report an increase in global temperatures puts up to 1/3 of all Earth’s animals at risk of extinction. The gorillas of Rwanda’s Virunga Mountains in central Africa are already at risk from rising temperatures. Changes in rainfall and hotter weather mean the vegetation the gorillas depend on changes growth patterns, moving up the mountain into higher altitudes. The gorillas provide Rwanda with tourist revenue and the rainfall in the Virunga Mountains feeds rivers and provides hydro electricity for...
