This bridge will astonish the world!
Posted by Joanna in Science & Technology, Weird & Wonderful, 12 Dec 2011
A bridge that will be built on the lake in Xidong Central Park in Wuxi, China, experts have already been calling legendary, although construction has not even started yet. The projects of the Chinese architects from the L&A Design Group are known for winning voices of recognition all around the world.
Futuristic design elements will connect the northern and southern parts of the park. In the middle of the pedestrian bridge an artificial island with restaurants, tea rooms, galleries and gardens will be created.
The project is distinguished by smooth but dynamic lines. The bridge will have a shape resembling an inverted and distorted letter S.
L&A Design Group architects are planning to use a combination of light steel structures and clear and plain panels to build the bridge. Some elements in the recreational areas are going to be made of wood.
Spectacular lighting will be provided at night. People in Wuxi will be able to observe a panoramic view of the lake from the bridge.

China Sandstorms Bring Record Levels of Air Pollution to Hong Kong
Sandstorms that swept across China this week brought more with them than sand and haze; they also brought record levels of air pollution. To give an idea of how bad the pollution levels are (or were): Hong Kong has an Air Pollution Index that contains information on different levels of pollution. The API is based on the concentration of pollutants found in the air. When the air pollution reaches a particular level, it is usually recommended that the general public stay...
Eco-friendly bottles soon to hit shelves
Leading beverage manufacturer, Coca-Cola, has announced its plans to use a more eco-friendly bottle for its Dasani water product. This bottle is made from a mix of petroleum and plant-based materials and has 25% less carbon emissions than traditional PET bottles. An estimated 1.6 billion servings of Coca-cola made products are consumed daily, these outstanding numbers alone should prompt the company to pursue and expand its use of recyclable, more sustainable and eco-friendly packaging. Rare lizard survives long-haul flight and machine wash
A rare Chioninia lizard from Cape Verde climbed into a tourist’s luggage before she boarded her flight from the African islands to the UK. The lizard survived a 3,000-mile (5,000 km) flight in a cold luggage hold, followed by a machine wash cycle at the tourist’s home in Somerset, UK. Sue Banwell-Moore found the lizard after removing her washing from the machine. She assumed it was dead until it surprisingly recovered. From the Guardian: I was hanging out the washing on the clothes...
We are both literally and metaphorically soaked in oil
It was only a matter of time before oil started raining down from the sky. It’s just ironic that it’s happening after we’ve past peak oil. It’s as if God is saying, ‘you want it that bad? Here, have some!’ I’m just waiting for someone to call it a renewable natural resource – after all, it’s plant-based and falling from the sky. Geo-engineering has unintentionally made this possible. In all seriousness, the whole ‘it’s raining oil in Louisiana’ scare comes from...
The problem of coastal ecosystems
Although the Mediterranean sea covers only one per cent of the world's marine areas, it contains some six per cent of its marine species. Some of the world's most endangered species, can be found in the Mediterranean. Fish stocks are down to 20 per cent of natural levels in some areas and the Mediterranean is now a net importer of fish. Today, 82 million people live in coastal cities; by 2025 there will be an estimated 150-170 million. The southern...
California community coexists with coyotes
Southern California is a strange place. It is the global center for popular culture; film, television, music, media, etc. But there are wild animals roaming Hollywood Blvd at night. Coyotes – these native North American canine predators hunt in the suburbs of Southern California. The same places where residents with manicured lawns raise families and keep pet cats and dogs. Sometimes coyotes eat cats and dogs. Sometimes they even attack small children. So it’s understandable that some California residents would like to exterminate coyotes,...
Go Green: Shift Your Habit!

From holiday gift wrapping to house cleaning and work transportation, you’d be amazed at the savings that can pile up, simply from going green! Despite the problems the environment faces and the ever-growing trend of “going green”, there are people out there who still only think of themselves. They don’t care about changing their life to help the planet;...
Check Out San Francisco’s Urban Forest Map Project!
Amber Bieg is on a mission: to account for every single tree in San Francisco. It all started 5 years ago when Bieg was planting trees in the North Beach area of San Francisco. She realized that “it was really inefficient for one individual, or even a group, to go out with GPS units and survey trees”. So, she started on a plan to get the whole community involved. Bieg partnered up with ecologist, Kelaine Vargas, and the Urban Forest Map...
Watch the COP16 United Nations Climate talks in Cancun LIVE
Last year, with all the fuss surrounding COP15 and the U.N. Climate Conference in Copenhagen, I decided to follow as much of the talks and the things going on there live through oneclimate.net, a website dedicated to social action and discussion about climate change. And I have to say I really liked it. The reporters did a fantastic job bringing as much news as possible as fast as possible. Most of the actual U.N. talks where broadcasted live too, this...
The way we react to climate change may be making it worse
The headline in The Ecologist, ‘Human response to climate change is making matters worse’, is a bit of a f*&#(^@ downer. Upon reading the actual article, it doesn’t get that much better. A recent study has researched the impacts of human response to climate change on biodiversity. The study, recently published in the journal Conservation Letters, attempts to assess the impact of responses such as the biofuel industry, which has contributed to the destruction of rainforests and peat bogs in South East Asia....
