Largest insect ever photographed – oh and it’s almost extinct too!
Posted by Murielle in Conservation, Nature, Weird & Wonderful, Wildlife & Flora, 10 Dec 2011
Another endangered fellow deserves some attention today. Check out the below video of a Giant Weta, a cricket-like insect with a wingspan of nearly 18 inches. The animal is almost exclusively found in New Zealand.
Although New Zealand is a perfect habitat for this insect, rats introduced by Europeans in the region hunt the Giant Weta to a point it’s now facing extinction.
The Giant Weta in the video weights almost as much as three mice. Incredible!

The Critically Endangered Siberian Crane Needs Your Help
Have you ever seen a Siberian Crane? It’s an absolutely beautiful bird. Unfortunately, it’s also a critically endangered bird. The Siberian Crane is a migratory bird. It travels about 3,100 miles (5,000 km) every year from northern Siberia to either China or Iran. Much of the wetlands along its migration route are being drained for farming. There is also an issue with China’s Three Gorges Dam, where 98% of the remaining Siberian Cranes go for winter. Their wintering area near the...

Nearly 50 Bottlenose Dolphin target="_blas were stranded near the mouth of a river on the Australian island of Tasmania over the weekend At least 29 of the dolphins died in the stranding. Wildlife experts saved 12 dolphins, but unfortunately one of the survivors was found dead yesterday. Chris Arthur, a spokesman for Tasmania’s Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment stated: “We do know that four of those released were last seen near the mouth of the river and were...
Seattle’s Puget Sound Endangered by Dog Waste
The Puget Sound – home to a vast array of marine and mammal life (including human) is constantly being threatened by pollutants, and it seems pet poop is one of the culprits. Storm water runoffs, polluted by various household chemicals and oils, (as well as the aforementioned poop) eventually end up in the sound, dumping some 140,000 pounds of waste into the body of water. The pollution can severely damage the wildlife in the region, not to mention Washington State’s...
RealClimate.Org: Get Your Climate Change Facts Straight
Global Warming antagonists, anti-greenies and conspiracy theorists are always looking for an excuse or a way out. They say Climate Change is not real. They say there is no proof or that the proof is all faked. With the recent hacking mayhem that occurred, they see it as their big opportunity to show the world that we’ve all been duped. A few vague e-mails without a shred of any proof of deception is their big weapon right now, and conveniently...
Chimpanzees and Other Animals Display Altruistic Behavior
In the past, a typical family had a mother, father, and approximately 2.3 kids. That was the norm—though I’m still trying to figure out how a third of a child (.3) is normal. Today, families come in all shapes and sizes. There are single parents, there are interracial families, there are same-gender parents, and there are a lot of foster families and adoptions happening more every day. A fascinating discovery, however, shows that humans are not the only creature to have...
Allergies May Get Worse, Thanks to Climate Change
Another storm is brewing. This one won’t only hit the southern US, western South America or Southeast Asia. It will travel across the globe; seasonal for some and a daily thing for others. Oh, and it might just be courtesy of climate change. What kind of storm am I talking about? Simply, an allergy storm and it’s heading your way. Okay, so maybe that was a bit over the top, but in all seriousness, research conducted in Italy suggests that...
Rise of the veggie robots: Steampunk for real?
It's science fiction meets Victorian technology. The US military may be going a bit steampunk by funding the development of a robot that gathers its own fuel by foraging. The robot would run on biomass – like wood, leaves or grass – or whatever other fuel source it could gather by itself, which would in turn power its own steam engine. From the Economist article 'Vegetarian robots: Munching machines': The EATR uses a robotic arm to gather and prepare vegetation, which it feeds...
2012 Predictions: Which disasters should I believe?
It’s TEOTWAWKI – the end of the world as we know it… do you feel fine? Despite economic and social crises that only show signs of getting worse, intensifying environmental problems – climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, etc. – wars, famines, a deepening democratic deficit in most of the world, the big apocalyptic prediction of 2012 which gets the most attention is of course the so-called ‘Mayan Prophecy’. This doomsday scenario is an interpretation of the Long Count calendar of the...
Learn How to Make Homemade Ice Cream for National Ice Cream Month!
Here’s some sweet information for all you US residents: This month is National Ice Cream Month! In 1984, former president, Ronald Regan, declared July to be National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday (which was yesterday) as National Ice Cream Day. Why? Apparently, he wanted to give proper recognition to the popularity of ice cream in the states (about 90% of the US population eats ice cream) and even announced that both occasions (the month and the day) should be...
Phytoplankton: A Small Solution to a Big Problem
Here is a bit of news that might shock you: the high loss of ice shelves in Antarctica may actually be a good thing. Lloyd Peck of the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) led a group of scientists in a study of the shelves and other activity taking place in the Antarctic. What they discovered is phytoplankton in the newly-exposed areas of sea are absorbing atmospheric and ocean carbon through photosynthesis. Once they’ve absorbed the carbon, they will either be eaten or...
