Did you know? 1 out of 17 Americans live with a serious mental illness.
Posted by Murielle in Health, 6 Oct 2011
Mental Illness Awareness week was created by Congress in 1990 and it supports the efforts of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). The aim of the week is to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness and dispel some of the fears we have about people with mental illness. The University of Southern California created an infographic, “Facing Mental Illness,” showing some mind dazzling numbers.

Margret Atwood: Year of the Flood
Over the last few years I've read a lot of science fiction – or rather 'speculative fiction' on floods. Massive, destructive, Earth-drowning floods. You know, when runaway climate change causes the polar ice caps to melt and suddenly the Statue of Liberty is nothing but a torch thrusting out from the waters of the New York Bay. I like reading about stuff like that – apocalyptic dystopia's, disastrous future scenarios – so long as I'm warm, dry and well fed. After...
First color photo of OR7 wolf taken in California
A couple of months ago California’s only wild wolf went back to Oregon, leaving the Golden State effectively wolfless. But now he’s back in Cali and the paparazzi have caught him on film. Actually, OR7's – or as he is sometimes referred to, Journey's – photo was snapped by an employee of the California Department of Fish and Game From the Los Angeles Times: For the last couple of months he has wandered back and forth across the state border, most recently spending time...
Color Coded Sectioned Plates may Help You Eat Better
Diets can be a real pain to stick with. Most of us are aware that we should eat a certain amount of fruits, veggies, breads, dairy and so forth per day; but how many of us actually do it? I know I certainly don’t. I can’t even remember the last time I had 8 glasses of water in one day, or 3 servings of veggies. Typically, we go with what we crave and what is easiest to get a hold of....
Video: Climate scientist explains global weather woes
From Australia to China to Pakistan to Russia and central Europe, this summer has so far been characterized by extreme weather events such as torrential rains, flooding, drought and wildfires. In the following video report by ITN News, climate scientist Thomas R. Karl explains how the current extreme weather events across the globe are linked and most likely connected to human activity. Karl is the head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Climate Services office in Washington DC. From an...
New York Harbor – what’s in the water?
Lots of pollution and chemicals, of course! Anyone who has ever visited New York and strolled down by the water has probably seen and smelled that. But that’s not all, folks. Not by a long shot. In a piece for New York magazine dated May 9th of this year, Christopher Bonanos explores what fascinating, scary and downright weird things lie beneath the dark and toxic waters around New York City. Did you know? A 10,500-mile (17,000 km) long gas main runs all the...

Famed Groundhog Punxsutawney Phil Becomes PETA’s Latest Target
Groundhog Day is around the corner and if you happen to be a Groundhog Day enthusiast, you may have heard of Punxsutawney Phil. Punxsutawney is a small town in southwestern Pennsylvania. Punxsutawney Phil would be their famed resident groundhog. This groundhog has been depicted in the movie Groundhog Day, had a race held in his honor by Bam Margera, and actually lives a better life than some people. Phil is responsible for the well-known groundhog tradition: if he sees his shadow,...
Origin of Tasmanian Devil Facial Tumor Found
Fourteen years ago, a Tasmanian Devil was officially diagnosed with Devil Facial Tumor Disease (DFTD). Transmitted by a simple bite or other physical contact, the disease ravaged the Tasmanian Devil population for over a decade, wiping out nearly 60% of the species found on Tasmania. The tumor that forms can be found in and around the mouth, which interferes with eating and leads to death by starvation. One thing in particular about DFTD baffled scientists: where does it come from? A...
Endangered Species of the Week – Queen Alexandra’s birdwing
Species: Queen Alexandra’s birdwing (Ornithoptera alexandrae) Status: Endangered (EN) Interesting Fact: Queen Alexandra’s birdwing is the world’s largest species of butterfly With an enormous wingspan of up to 28 centimetres, Queen Alexandra’s birdwing deservedly has the title of the world’s largest butterfly. Vibrantly coloured, this magnificent butterfly feeds only from a single species of vine. The vine contains a toxic substance which, when consumed by the caterpillar, makes them distasteful to potential predators. This trait is advertised by the caterpillar’s bright, conspicuous colouration, but...
Top 10 Environmental Charities Supported by Celebrities
Every one of us (or at least a lot of us) has our ways of living green or helping the environment. We recycle, buy organic products, do volunteer work or donate money to environmental charities and organizations. Believe it or not, there are quite a few celebrities out there that do the same. Cate Blanchett recently narrated a video for IspeakEarth.com. Daryl Hannah did volunteer work aboard the Steve Irwin vessel with the Sea Shepherd crew. And I think we...

Hi Rachel,
Indeed I think we always should be cautious with such statistics. Although being subject to a mental illness is really terrible we must make sure misdiagnosis is reduced as much as possible.
i DON’T KNOW IF SOME OF YOU WILL AGREE ON MY OPINION BUT I THINK THE BIGGEST FACTOR OF ALL THESE IS WHAT AMERICANS PUT IN THEIR SYSTEM…FIRST IS FOOD AND SECOND IS , i NOTICED AMERICANS ARE SO DRUG DEPENDENT, EX. A SLIGHT HEAD ACHE, MUSCLE PAIN YOU’LL SEE THEM WITH MEFENAMIC OR ASPERIN. THEN THE FOOD.. EVERYTHING IS SO FORTIFIED SOMETIMES MORE THAN ENOUGH OF THE DAILY ALLOWANCE REQUIRED. SOME TEND TO BUY READY MADE FOOD, THE MICROWAVEBLES, INSTEAD OF COOKING IT FROM THE SCRATCH………ALL THESE SYNTHETIC STUFF PUT A FAIR SHARE OF AN IMPACT TO THE BRAIN….
