Did you know? 1 out of 17 Americans live with a serious mental illness.

Mental Illness Awareness week was created by Congress in 1990 and it supports the efforts of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). The aim of the week is to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness and dispel some of the fears we have about people with mental illness. The University of Southern California created an infographic, “Facing Mental Illness,” showing some mind dazzling numbers.

Lactose intolerance: British plans for super dairies spark consumer backlash
Are US-style factory dairy farms coming to the UK? Plans for a ‘super dairy’ in Lincolnshire, England has some consumers’ blood curdling. Animal rights activists have compared the proposed dairy to the cramped conditions of battery chicken and pig farms. Others fear that such a large farm might put small, independent family farms out of business. The dairy industry in the UK compares well to large American and European farms where cows are kept inside and eat little grass, and are seen...
Endangered Species of the Week: Saiga antelope
Species: Saiga antelope (Saiga tatarica) Status: Critically Endangered (CR) Interesting Fact: The large proboscis-like nose of the saiga antelope is thought to help with body temperature control. The strange looking saiga antelope has an extremely distinctive appearance, with an enlarged nose that hangs down over the mouth. This impressive nose is thought to warm and moisten inhaled air during the winter, and act as a filter against dust during the dry summer. Saiga antelope feed by grazing on various plants, and are usually active during the day. They...
Scientists drill into the past to learn more about global warming
Some very old ice in northern Greenland may provide insights into how our climate might change in the future. Scientists at the NEEM ice coring project in Greenland are drilling into ice sheets to retrieve ice from the previous interglacial period. Interglacials are warm intervals within ice ages. The previous interglacial, called the Eemian, ended 115,000 years ago. NEEM (North Greenland Eemian Ice Drilling) hopes to learn more about what our future climate will be like by studying the distant...
7.5 Earthquake Strikes Near India; No Damages or Casualties Reported
A 7.5 earthquake struck near India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands early yesterday morning. Although tsunami warnings were issued, they have been withdrawn since. Power went out in some areas and tremors from the quake were also felt on India, which was more than 600 miles (1,000 km) from the epicenter. The good news is there are no reports of any damages or casualties to speak of, despite the fact that the area is known as an earthquake hotspot, thanks to...
Vancouver’s Cypress Mountain Needs Snow Transported for Winter Olympics
This coming weekend marks the beginning of the 2010 Winter Olympics. They are set to happen in Vancouver, Canada, and will last for the rest of this month. Over 2,000 athletes from at least 80 different nations are expected to participate in these series of world renowned (and extremely cold) events. Vancouver—an area that is typically used to cold winter weather—has been dealing with a bit of warmth lately. High temperatures this week are expected to range between 40 and 50...
Can carbon trading save Indonesia’s forests?
According to Greenpeace, Indonesia had the fastest rate of deforestation in the world between the years 2000-2005. This rampant destruction – both illegal and legal – is fueled by the worldwide demand for palm oil, paper and tropical wood. Deforestation of Indonesia's rainforest and peatlands contributes to rising greenhouse gases in multiple ways, including eliminating carbon sinks, releasing CO2 trapped in peat and from slash and burn methods of agriculture. Political journalist Andre Vltchek describes the dilemma in Indonesia – heedless...
Update: European flights still uncertain due to ash from Iceland volcano
The cloud of ash over the UK and much of Europe is continuing to disrupt air traffic as eruptions from Iceland's Eyjafjallajökull volcano continue. When flights will resume regular service is still unknown. UK air traffic controllers have suggested that British airspace may reopen at 7am tomorrow, yet major carriers have cancelled all flights for Monday. From the Guardian: Over 20 countries have airspace restrictions, many banning all non-emergency flights, but commercial operators, including British Airways, KLM and Air France, have carried...
Hong Kong: Most liveable or most polluted city?
photo by John Roberts (Flickr CC) What you read or hear about Hong Kong can be confusing. Recently the semi-autonomous city state of the People's Republic of China was named the “most liveable city” in the world by the Economist Intelligence Unit bi-annual global liveability index. This year's criteria was designed by an urban planner and judged cities based on their amount of natural and cultural assets; green space; connectivity; absence of sprawl and lack of isolation. ECA International also rated Hong...
US vs. China and low expectations characterize climate talks
The UN climate talks currently underway in Tianjin, China are smaller, more subdued and well organized when compared to the major international event at Copenhagen last December. But in the end they are still about China vs. the United States. Tianjin is being seen as an opportunity to find some common ground before the UN summit in Cancún, Mexico later this year, but the chief US envoy is frustrated at the level and speed of progress taking place. Instead of actual progress...
Fight slavery and human trafficking!
Last night on CNN I watched a series of programs on human trafficking, a subject I’ve studied and posted about before. Simply put, human trafficking is slavery. Most slaves are children and women who are poor and vulnerable, but the victims of human trafficking can be anyone, regardless of class, location, age, gender or ethnicity. The illegal trade of human beings is a widespread, multibillion-dollar industry that most people know nothing or next to nothing about. Yet there are now more slaves...

Hi Rachel,
Indeed I think we always should be cautious with such statistics. Although being subject to a mental illness is really terrible we must make sure misdiagnosis is reduced as much as possible.
i DON’T KNOW IF SOME OF YOU WILL AGREE ON MY OPINION BUT I THINK THE BIGGEST FACTOR OF ALL THESE IS WHAT AMERICANS PUT IN THEIR SYSTEM…FIRST IS FOOD AND SECOND IS , i NOTICED AMERICANS ARE SO DRUG DEPENDENT, EX. A SLIGHT HEAD ACHE, MUSCLE PAIN YOU’LL SEE THEM WITH MEFENAMIC OR ASPERIN. THEN THE FOOD.. EVERYTHING IS SO FORTIFIED SOMETIMES MORE THAN ENOUGH OF THE DAILY ALLOWANCE REQUIRED. SOME TEND TO BUY READY MADE FOOD, THE MICROWAVEBLES, INSTEAD OF COOKING IT FROM THE SCRATCH………ALL THESE SYNTHETIC STUFF PUT A FAIR SHARE OF AN IMPACT TO THE BRAIN….
