Did you know? 1 out of 17 Americans live with a serious mental illness.

Mental Illness Awareness week was created by Congress in 1990 and it supports the efforts of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). The aim of the week is to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness and dispel some of the fears we have about people with mental illness. The University of Southern California created an infographic, “Facing Mental Illness,” showing some mind dazzling numbers.

Severe Storms Attack Australia’s Coasts
It may have seemed like the end of the world for residents of Perth, Australia, this week. At least 160,000 people were left without power on Tuesday as golf ball-sized hailstones, floods and landslides attacked the town. Falling trees took out power lines and damaged homes, while flood waters ran into hospitals and schools. Some patients even had to be evacuated from one hospital’s emergency room after the roof collapsed. Colin Barnett, premier of Western Australia, figured the damage bill to...
China: Floods sweep thousands of barrels of toxic chemicals into river, worrying Russia
China’s worst flooding in ten years has resulted in widespread problems including over 1,250 people dead or missing, thousands of homes destroyed and billions of euros in damage to infrastructure. One of the latest worries is that around 7,000 barrels, some containing toxic chemicals, were swept into the Songhua River on Wednesday. Authorities in China claim that nearly 3,000 have been recovered, but whether the barrels were empty or full is unclear. From a BBC News report: It is a source of drinking-water...
Keep Track of COP15 Negotiations with the Climate Scoreboard
People across the globe are following the big Copenhagen event. Businesses, schools, politicians, stay-at-home parents and even celebrities are keeping a close eye on the climate change negotiations, waiting and wondering about what will happen. What will the results be? Where do we go from here? It is possible to watch 24/7 live coverage of the event, but given the time needed to sleep, eat and do other daily things, it is guaranteed that portions of the conference will be...

IWC Whaling Conference = Epic Fail; Captain Paul Watson of Sea Shepherd Wanted by Interpol
It seems that whenever there is a major (or at least rather anticipated) conference or meeting that is supposed to solve some ongoing environmental issue, it always fails. Either the people at the meeting can’t agree on anything and it’s all called off, or they scrap up some last minute deal that really amounts to nothing, or the decision is postponed for 6 month to a year (or longer). The latest IWC whaling conference in Morocco is no different. Nothing was...
The Urban Sprawl: Coming to a Neighborhood Near You!
We humans can be quite viral, like the common cold. We spread from place to place and clog up the lands and rivers by settling around them. Urban sprawl quite aptly describes the urbanization of green fields and lush forests, river valleys and farmlands, all because we like to be one with nature. But it’s one thing to commune with nature and another to uproot it to make place for you, like a school bully taking the lunch money from...
Video: Mekong River drying up, but who or what is to blame?
One of the world's major rivers, the Mekong flows through China, Burma, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. It is now at a 50 year low in parts of Thailand and Laos, and looks more like a desert in some places. The Thai government has attributed some blame to China for the drying up of the Mekong, due to their use of hydroelectric power stations on the river. China denies this, claiming that the drought is a natural phenomenon. According to an article...
Iceland volcano: Flight ban lifted in Europe
Though some flight restrictions are still in place due to remaining concerns about the ash cloud over Europe, most airspace has reopened. Now airlines face the massive task of getting hundreds of thousands of passengers home. Combine this with the criticisms already being directed towards European governments and the airline industry; and the possibility that Iceland's Eyjafjallajökull volcano could erupt again. From a BBC News report: Frances Tuke, spokeswoman for travel body Abta, said the return to normality would be slow and...
Nonlethal Whale Research Expedition A Success
About 6 weeks ago, a group of researchers set out on a mission: to prove that Japan does not need to perform “lethal whale research” in order to obtain accurate and effective scientific information about the large marine mammals. The mission was a success. Australian, French and New Zealand scientists set out to Antarctic waters to perform their own nonlethal scientific research on the whales. Most of the whales studied were humpbacks; which the scientists took photos of and biopsy samples from...
Breaking: ‘Miracle rescue’ in China – 150+ saved after week in flooded coal mine
On March 28, 153 coal miners were trapped in the Wangjialing mine in Shanxi Province, northern China when the mine was suddenly flooded with water. More than one week later an amazing rescue is taking place. According to a CNN report, so far rescue workers have managed to save 115 miners. Two hundred people, as part of 50 rescue groups, were working around-the-clock to drain water, monitor gas and pull out miners, said Wang Jun, governor of Shanxi province where the mine...

Hi Rachel,
Indeed I think we always should be cautious with such statistics. Although being subject to a mental illness is really terrible we must make sure misdiagnosis is reduced as much as possible.
i DON’T KNOW IF SOME OF YOU WILL AGREE ON MY OPINION BUT I THINK THE BIGGEST FACTOR OF ALL THESE IS WHAT AMERICANS PUT IN THEIR SYSTEM…FIRST IS FOOD AND SECOND IS , i NOTICED AMERICANS ARE SO DRUG DEPENDENT, EX. A SLIGHT HEAD ACHE, MUSCLE PAIN YOU’LL SEE THEM WITH MEFENAMIC OR ASPERIN. THEN THE FOOD.. EVERYTHING IS SO FORTIFIED SOMETIMES MORE THAN ENOUGH OF THE DAILY ALLOWANCE REQUIRED. SOME TEND TO BUY READY MADE FOOD, THE MICROWAVEBLES, INSTEAD OF COOKING IT FROM THE SCRATCH………ALL THESE SYNTHETIC STUFF PUT A FAIR SHARE OF AN IMPACT TO THE BRAIN….
