Recycling magic: guy turns plastic bottle into trumpet!
Posted by Murielle in Green living, Recycling, Science & Technology, Weird Stuff, 19 Sep 2011
We’re always on the lookout for cool recycling uses of everyday objects. In my quest for recycling magic I came across this video of a guy using a plastic bottle as a trumpet. The music might not be 100% but it definitely is good enough. He gets an A++ in my book! Enjoy!

Study: Soil CO2 Emissions Have Increased Over the Years
Did you know that soil emits carbon dioxide? Not only does it emit CO2, but the analysis of 439 studies show that the emissions have increased over the last few decades. The study was conducted by terrestrial carbon research scientists, Allison Thomson and Ben Bond-Lamberty. They took 1,434 data points from nearly 50 years of soil-emissions data collected from over 400 studies around the world. Measurements were compared by accounting for differences between the studies, such as CO2 level gauging techniques...
Rachel Maddow on BP’s unbelievably bad safety record
BP has agreed to pay $50.6m (€39.7m) in fines to US government’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for failing to rectify safety hazards after a 2005 explosion at a Texas City oil refinery killed 15 workers and injured 170. BP already paid a $21.3m (€16.7m) record breaking fine to OSHA following the deadly 2005 explosion. Besides both fines BP has agreed to set aside $500m to correct safety conditions at the refinery for current workers. From an RTT News report: The settlement...

California Surfer Standup-Paddles for Charity, is Escorted by Minke Whale!
California surfer, Jodie Nelson, sure knows how to travel. On Sunday, she set out on a mission: to travel 40 miles from Santa Catalina Island to Dana Point via standup-paddle. Why? She wanted to inspire her best friend to keep fighting through her long struggle with breast cancer. She also hoped the 9 hour trip would raise awareness about breast cancer and also raise money for two cancer-related charities. Nelson is the first woman to make this particular journey and that...
Chimpanzees and Other Animals Display Altruistic Behavior
In the past, a typical family had a mother, father, and approximately 2.3 kids. That was the norm—though I’m still trying to figure out how a third of a child (.3) is normal. Today, families come in all shapes and sizes. There are single parents, there are interracial families, there are same-gender parents, and there are a lot of foster families and adoptions happening more every day. A fascinating discovery, however, shows that humans are not the only creature to have...
Russia fights fresh wave of wildfires
High winds have fueled a new spate of wildfires in Russia, resulting in several deaths and the destruction of hundreds of buildings. 20 villages in the Volgograd and Saratov provinces have lost around 500 buildings to the blazes. From an Al Jazeera English report: Dmitry Medvedev, the Russian president, has ordered authorities to mobilise all means to fight the new blazes, as the emergencies ministry warned there was a risk of the fires spreading to other southern regions. These new fires come on the tail...
A Dangerous Thing may be Lurking in Your Own Backyard
There is something that happens in many rural areas around the globe. It’s a fairly common thing and it can also be a fairly dangerous thing, both to your health and to the environment. What am I referring to? Backyard Trash Burning. Yes, in many rural areas—small towns or out in the country—people will burn their trash. Typically, the trash is burned in a burning barrel (usually a 55 gallon metal drum), though some will also burn their garbage in boxes,...
Silent Summer – Sir David Attenborough lends weight to book on destruction of UK ecosystems
A new major environmental book, entitled Silent Summer: The State of Wildlife in Britain and Ireland, offers up disturbing facts and figures about the human impact on nature in the British Isles. Celebrated naturalist, broadcaster and national treasure Sir David Attenborough has penned the forward to the book, a collaborative effort by 40 UK ecologists, which outlines the impacts of pesticides, population growth and intensive farming on British and Irish flora and fauna. The 600-page book, edited by Norman Maclean, emeritus...

Breaking News: Oil Rig Explodes in Gulf of Mexico…Again!
Another offshore oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico. The rig is located west of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion/spill site that started back in April and is approximately 80 miles south of Vermilion Bay, located along Louisiana's central coast. The explosion was reported by a commercial helicopter company early this morning. Since then, at least 7 helicopters, 2 planes, and 4 boats have made their way to the site. There were 13 people on board and fortunately,...
