Climate change: Smog and heat mean more “unhealthy days” for California
Posted by Graham_Land in Climate & Change, Health, Videos & Documentaries, 5 Aug 2011
Maps using data on ozone pollution, ragweed and “extreme heat days” in the United States show California to be an especially vulnerable place.
The number of unhealthy days in Los Angeles, in particular, is expected to rise in the coming years due to a combination of rising temperatures from climate change, droughts, flooding and pollution.
Research shows that rising temperatures can worsen the negative health impacts of pollution and ragweed on respiratory illnesses such as asthma.
Los Angeles has smog and ragweed pollen problems and is at risk for at least one unhealthy air quality day per summer, meaning the air does not meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s standard for ground-level ozone. Smog intermixed with pollen poses a dual threat to the health of people with allergies and asthma.

Sustainable energy: Goodbye Canada, hello Africa?
According to Yale University’s 2010 Environmental Performance Index (EPI) Canada ranked as the 46th greenest country in the world, a shameful and sudden drop from #12 in 2008. Why? Mostly due to Canadian ‘tar sands’ or ‘oil sands’ in the province of Alberta, where huge petroleum reserves lie in the form of bitumen, a heavy black form of crude that is energy intensive, highly polluting and more greenhouse gas intensive than conventional oil extraction. And now Canada has pulled out of...
Doing our bit: Rise of the veggie footsoldier
During the last few days the British press has run some relatively prominent articles once again highlighting the correlation between meat eating and climate change, also resulting in a few additional commentary pieces and the usual backlash. Perhaps biggest of all is the Observer Food Monthly magazine’s OFM vegetarian recipe special edited by none other than the McCartney family (Sir Paul, Mary and Stella). Far from simply a collection of recipes – including several from Gwyneth Paltrow and other veggie celebs...
Survey Says: Americans Preach About Conservation, But Don’t Always Practice It
A recent survey, conducted by researchers at Yale and George Mason universities, showed that although many Americans like the idea of conservation, most do not practice it in their everyday lives. The survey was conducted between December 24, 2009 and January 3, 2010, and included nearly 1,000 adult Americans. While many Americans feel it is “very important” or “somewhat important” to turn off unnecessary lights (92%), lower the thermostat in winter (83%), and use public transportation or carpool (73%), there are...
Off to college: How about becoming a green student?
Going green has become fashionable in recent years, but it’s more than just a fad: conservation and green initiatives are now integral parts of many college campuses. Even if your college campus doesn’t participate in green initiatives, there steps you can take as an individual that will translate to real impact. Don’t be a litterbug Seems simple, right? But the amount of trash the average American produces in just one day is staggering: more than four pounds of solid waste, ranging from...
They ran naked for the sake of the environment!
Several dozen men ran naked around the University of Manila. They wanted to draw attention to the need for greater environmental protection. Bare runs have become a tradition at this Filipino University. Every year a group of students meet to fight in defense of the environment. The tradition started over 40 years ago. Then, the students were running around in protest against President Ferdinand Marcos. This year, runners fought for purification of the local rivers. Although the message was not clear for...
Beach Blanket Benzene
The world’s beaches are covered in filth. Not to sound alarmist – or heaven forbid, put someone off their well-deserved beach holiday – but reports from around the globe (or glob) show that beaches everywhere are in an increasingly dire state. We’ve already found out that our oceans are facing ‘catastrophic’ conditions, but that shouldn’t spoil a bit of fun, sun, surf and sand, should it? Problem is, many of those beaches we associate with a nice day out in Mother Nature’s...
Cocoa genetic code cracked – Bittersweet?
Multinational chocolate giant Mars, working with the US Department of Agriculture and IBM, have sequenced the genome of the cocoa tree. Rather than patenting the genome, it’s been released into the public domain. Unlocking the genetic secrets of chocolate, scientists say, could revolutionize cocoa farming in the developing world, especially in West African nations. Cocoa production is severely hampered by pests and fungal diseases, which regularly cause hundreds of millions of euros in losses in West African chocolate producing nations like Ghana...

13 Hawksbill Turtles to be Released Into the Wild!
Endangered sea turtles have finally been part of some good news lately. First, 71 Green Sea Turtles were rescued in Bali and sent back to the sea. Now, 13 Hawksbill Turtles bred in captivity in Japan are also to be released into a natural habitat from Singapore later this year. Five one-year-old and 8 three-year-old turtles were sent to the Underwater World Singapore aquarium last week to prepare them for their release. Staff at the aquarium will monitor the turtles and...
Endangered Species of the Week: Spotted handfish
Species: Spotted handfish (Brachionichthys hirsutus) Status: Critically Endangered (CR) Interesting Fact: The spotted handfish has hand-like ‘paired fins’ that enable it to ‘walk’ along the seafloor! The unusual looking spotted handfish is one of the world’s most endangered marine fish. It has an extremely distinctive, almost pear-shaped body which is marked with a myriad of dusky brown to yellow-brown spots, the pattern of which is unique to each individual. During the spawning season, the male spotted handfish entices the female with a courtship display. The female then...
