Climate change: Smog and heat mean more “unhealthy days” for California
Posted by Graham_Land in Climate Change, Health, Videos & Documentaries, 5 Aug 2011
Maps using data on ozone pollution, ragweed and “extreme heat days” in the United States show California to be an especially vulnerable place.
The number of unhealthy days in Los Angeles, in particular, is expected to rise in the coming years due to a combination of rising temperatures from climate change, droughts, flooding and pollution.
Research shows that rising temperatures can worsen the negative health impacts of pollution and ragweed on respiratory illnesses such as asthma.
Los Angeles has smog and ragweed pollen problems and is at risk for at least one unhealthy air quality day per summer, meaning the air does not meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s standard for ground-level ozone. Smog intermixed with pollen poses a dual threat to the health of people with allergies and asthma.

Alligator Monogamy Surprises Scientists
For years, it was believed that alligators were promiscuous and not all that interested in life or long-term partnerships. Luckily, beliefs and theories can be disproven, and they have been once again. A study that was conducted in the Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge in Louisiana showed that 70% of the female American alligators chose to stay with their partner for long periods of time. The findings of this 10 year study shocked scientists, since the large reptiles live in such populated areas...
Operation Waltzing Matilda: Sea Shepherd vs. Japanese Whaling in the Antarctic Seas
The newest season of Whale Wars is underway and it already looks to be quite the volatile one. The Sea Shepherd crew has embarked on their 6th Whale Defense Campaign, this time through southern arctic waters. The campaign—appropriately named “Operation Waltzing Matilda”—launched from Australia on December 7th. The ship, named Steve Irwin after the late “Crocodile Hunter”, even had a few surprise visitors come to see it disembark: Terri, Bindi and Bob Irwin. Picking up a trail from one of the Japanese...
Frankfurt motor show dominated by electric car concepts
As we are all more and more aware of the need to change our car habits and practices, the automobile industry seems to finally be picking up the pace. At the current world famous Frankfurt show, electric car concepts are dominating the exhibition grounds. It seems as though plans are now well under way to bring electric cars to the masses, keeping in mind, however, that most carmakers at the motor show are only displaying concepts to illustrate what they will...

Eco Solutions – more on conservation, eco warriors and green tech
Since it's the weekend, why not sit back, put your feet up and watch an environmentally themed video report? This month's Eco Solutions from CNN starts with a recap of an earlier report on Japan's efforts to develop new ways for farming the endangered and highly valued bluefin tuna. It's a classic example of supply and demand vs. practical conservation and environmentalism. Feel free to juxtapose the situation in Japan against the bluefin's plight in Europe, as described by maritime archeologist...
More of Those Nifty Eco-Inventions: Flying Machines, Water Filters, and Portable Wind
Yes, people still are cranking out more amazing (and sometimes crazy) eco-friendly or nature-inspired designs. Inventions have ranged from household gadgets to building structures and while many of these things are still in their prototype stage, it still can give you a glimpse of what the future holds. This week has some rather interesting gizmos (to say the least) that are definitely worth checking out. Ovopur First up, we have (yet another) water filtration system. Designed by Manual Desrochers, this neat creation...

2012 Predictions: Which disasters should I believe?
It’s TEOTWAWKI – the end of the world as we know it… do you feel fine? Despite economic and social crises that only show signs of getting worse, intensifying environmental problems – climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, etc. – wars, famines, a deepening democratic deficit in most of the world, the big apocalyptic prediction of 2012 which gets the most attention is of course the so-called ‘Mayan Prophecy’. This doomsday scenario is an interpretation of the Long Count calendar of the...
Toxic Alpine time capsule: warming temperatures release chemical horrors from the 60s and 70s
It’s the environmental equivalent of someone posting dorky junior high school photos of you on facebook, except it’s not funny. Instead of braces, feathered hair and bad skin, this time carcinogens, chemical pesticides and industrial compounds are returning from the past to haunt us. Starting to feel nostalgic? Me neither. Glaciers melting in the Swiss Alps due to higher than normal temperatures are apparently releasing toxic chemicals that have been stored in ice for up to 50 years. Swiss researchers are...
