The Dark Side: Greenpeace targets VW as Europe’s least eco-friendly carmaker
Posted by Graham_Land in Climate & Change, Videos & Documentaries, 28 Jun 2011
Activist group Greenpeace claims that while Volkswagen promotes itself as a ‘green’ auto company, when it comes to delivering on environmental issues, Europe’s biggest carmaker is a greenwash.
VW sold 2.9 million cars in Europe in 2009, over a million more than its leading competition, PSA Peugeot Citroën. But you can’t blame them for that, can you?
The real problem is that on average Volkswagens pollute more than any other of Europe’s top 8 auto brands. What’s more is that VW has failed to reduce emissions and increase fuel efficiency in its vehicles when compared to the competition (especially Toyota).
From the Independent:
According to the 24-page Greenpeace report, The Dark Side of Volkswagen, the German carmaker puts its most efficient engines in only 6 per cent of its cars and inflates their price by more than their cost, deterring the wider adoption of greener motoring.
Today Greenpeace launched a Star Wars-themed campaign against VW’s less than stellar environmental policies.
Despite the green image it likes to portray, VW is at the heart of a group of companies lobbying against new laws which we need to cut CO2 emissions, reduce our oil use and protect places like the Arctic from climate change.

UN sustainability report calls for big changes
United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon’s High-Level Panel on Global Sustainability is presenting its report today in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to address global problems of growing inequality, economic instability and environmental crisis. The report, entitled Resilient People, Resilient Planet: A Future Worth Choosing ‘contains 56 recommendations to put sustainable development into practice and to mainstream it into economic policy as quickly as possible’. From the report: The signposts are clear: We need to change dramatically, beginning with how we think about our...
A million seal pups drown off Canada’s coast
‘A million seal pups dead’ – this was the headline (in Swedish) for a brief article in Friday’s Sydsvenskan, a newspaper for the southern Swedish province of Skåne. But it was enough to make me want to know more. The lack of ice cover on Canada’s east coast has contributed to massive die off of seal pups, which are born on ice sheets. If there is not enough sea ice cover or the ice melts before the pups learn how to...
Are we entering ‘The Age of the Jellyfish’?
I have seen the future and it stings. Climate change, overfishing and agricultural runoff are all possible factors in the rise of jellyfish populations in seas around the globe. Jellyfish invasions such as those experienced by Spain last summer are actually population booms and/or mass migrations attributed to warmer waters, a reduction of predators and an increase of oceanic pollution from organic fertilizers. Besides wreaking havoc on Spain’s beaches, jellyfish have been blamed for wiping out salmon stocks in Northern Ireland and...
Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow!
With global temperature getting increasingly warmer, snow has been falling a lot less in some areas. I know the area I live in has been receiving a far less amount of snow in recent years than what used to accumulate 10 or 15 years ago. How much do you actually know about snow itself? I’m sure, at the very least, we all know that snow is formed from ice particles. I’m also guessing that most of you have heard that all...
Massive Lead Poisoning in China: Nearly 2000 Children Found to Be Sick
BBC News Channel headlines feature yet another segment highlighting environmental troubles in China. Two separate smelting plants have been closed recently after government crackdowns in response to protests from angry parents. One smelter in Shaanxi province was shut after 600 children were found to have severe lead poisoning. Only days later a second closed in Wugang city, Hunan province, thought to be responsible for emissions causing over 1,300 children to fall ill. That’s 70% of the population of those less...
Air travel and climate change – is it possible to fly Green?
We already know that airplanes emit a lot of CO2. But how much of an environmental impact does flying have when compared to other modes of transport? What about offsetting the carbon footprint of flying by participating in ecotourism or running planes on biodiesel? Besides CO2, airplanes emit water vapor, nitrous oxides, sulfate, and soot. Since this takes place much higher in the atmosphere than emissions that come from other sources, their effects are more harmful. Additionally, the Intergovernmental Panel on...
Disaster tourism: Holidays in Chernobyl’s exclusion zone
Besides older villagers returning and settling the still forbidden and still contaminated land around the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the Ukraine, another strange development has been taking place: guided tours. Chernobyl and the abandoned downwind city of Prypiat has become a bit of a tourist destination. I say it's a 'strange development', but I completely understand the fascination with post apocalyptic landscapes. The thought of traipsing through a 'living museum' contaminated with radioactive fallout is a bit less appealing, however....
Last talks before Cancun climate summit held in China this week
This week the final UN climate talks leading up to the summit in Cancun Mexico will be held in Tianjin, China, a large manufacturing city of over 12 million people. In the aftermath of a failed climate summit in Copenhagen last December, hope for any binding treaty between nations is slim. Kyoto part 2 seems like a politically impossible pipedream. Good news for the fossil fuel industry, bad news for most everyone else. If we believe the scientists, that is. From a...
Should the police be allowed to park in bike lanes?
Toronto police force gets a wake-up call from a feature written in the Toronto Sun about an officer parking illegally in a bike lane. But the cops are tops in Toronto, and although the force's traffic services department were incensed about this particular incident and expressed that such actions will not be tolerated some people still argue differently. Others, like Councillor Glenn De Baeremaeker, who cycles to City Hall from Scarborough most days, argue that police merit special consideration. Although it is...
European Perspectives on the Environment: “Make Love, Not CO₂”
Europeans: what is a Green city? EU Tube, the European Union’s Audiovisual Service youtube channel, produces informative and sometimes simply promotional videos about various issues concerning the EU. Many of EU Tube’s videos have an environmental bent, some getting their message across more effectively than others. As far as Green propaganda, I like this one: Make Love, Not CO₂. In 30 seconds it gives several simple visual tips on how to conserve energy and live more intelligently. It does so with...
